Waterfront seclusion on the Ozello islands

Bedrooms 2
Space 1,300 sq ft
Property type house
Minimum Stay 3 - 4 nights

About the property

Come relax and escape from it all in real Florida. The Ozello keys are a string of islands on Floridas nature coast that are fully accessible by car. Nestled between Homosassa Springs and Crystal River. This 2 bedroom/ 2 bath stilt home sits on a peninsula. It is fully furnished with all of the creature comforts of home including linens, dishes, spices, etc. It has a full kitchen, washer, dryer, 2 x flat screen TV's, wifi, Netflix, DVD player, grill, and covered parking. There are 2 elevated decks outside to enjoy as well as a large fire pit down by the water to make memories at. Also included are 3 kayaks for your use as well as limited fishing equipment and tackle. Kayaks and small boats can be used from the back yard. Boat ramp and marina is less than 1.5 miles away. Lots of things to do if you are looking for activities. Year round there is great fishing and nature watching from the back yard as well as seeing dolphin and manatees wondering through. Go down to the marina and see the area on an airboat tour. A quick trip up the road for a meal at either Backwater Fins or the historic Pecks restaurant. Maybe go explore Homosassa Springs and Crystal River, each about 10 miles away, there is always something going on. Little over an hour from Tampa or Orlando. Must be ok with friendly dogs because neighbor dogs will almost always come over to say hi. No gatherings or events over 12 people.

Quiet Old Florida

  • 5 of 5

This nice home is in a very quiet area about 10 miles from Crystal River. One reason we chose it was they accept dogs. Unfortunately, shortly before our stay the doggie that was to be with us died of old age. The good news was that the friendly neighbor dog was a frequent companion. We very much enjoyed a nearby airboat tour, manatee tour in Crystal River, dining at local "Backwater Fins", catching a number of crabs in the stream in the back yard and cooking them, and BBQ's by tiki torch light. A couple things not to count on are the pretty much worthless fishing equipment and kayaks, 2 or which had pretty much worthless back supports. Never-the-less, I am giving this 5 star rating for being a lovely relaxed location with options for a large variety of activities.

Quiet and Peaceful Retreat in the Ozello Islands

  • 5 of 5

This was our first time visiting the Ozello Islands region of the Florida Gulf Coast and we liked the area very much. It is quiet and unpretentious, the people are friendly and helpful. We wanted to visit the Ozello region to kayak and enjoyed doing a lot of that. We were able to put in at the canal right in front of the house for pleasant trips in both directions, or transport our kayaks to any of several nearby parks for nice trips. The area is vast. The house is at the end of a road, so no traffic going by at all. The house was very clean and had all that we needed for our 10 day stay. The owner, Justin, was helpful and responsive. We were met on our arrival by the neighbor's dog, who was very friendly and showed us around. He came to check on us several times a day and came on walks with us and our dog. He was a hoot. There are three local restaurants nearby; we tried and enjoyed them all. It was great to get away from several snowstorms that hit the northeast this March, get a preview of spring weather, and get an early start on kayaking season.

"Waterfront seclusion" is spot on

  • 5 of 5

We stayed for a week and loved the place. The house is great and had everything we needed. The property is awesome! If you like privacy, water and nature, this is your place. Justin was very helpful when I had questions, and his Dad was very accommodating when I needed a repair on my boat trailer.

The spirit of Old Florida

  • 5 of 5

Travel eight miles down a winding but asphalted road and then a short stretch on dirt appropriately called Hide A Way Drive and you experience privacy and seclusion at their most peaceful. The nearest sign of civilization is that far back and comes in the form of a Shell gas station and a Catholic Church. Anything closer (small restaurant, marina and such) is definitely old Florida. There are other houses in the area but they are equally secluded. You’ll only hear human activity from the house that is a far next door. The landscape is flat, wooded, with lots of waterways. The house sits on a large lot which is bordered by water on three sides. Kayaking is certainly a must. The area dogs range from huge to tiny and are really friendly but they are not all-over-you.

Don’t expect luxury but do count on all the amenities and appliances you have at home, plus an added indoor electric bar-b-q grill, which came in handy for the very cold spell we had over New Year’s—perfect weather for enjoying the fire pit as well as for swimming with the manatees, less than 30 minutes away.

For the house to accommodate six people it helps if two of them are children, for they will be sleeping on air mattresses. (Our grandkids brought their own, which they are used to sleeping in when traveling. I don’t think I’d be up for that anymore.) The master bedroom has plenty of space and then some for the extra mattresses, but perhaps the house could just add one of those day beds that slide one under the other or a murphy bed that swings down off the wall, since either would leave room to spare. Just a thought, Justin!

Btw, owner Justin Fletcher is a pleasure to deal with. He replies to email inquiries within hours, no matter how small your concern. (You first have to get over the VRBO hurdles of making full payment before gaining direct access to his email and phone.) Thank you, Justin, we had a very nice stay and would do it again!
