About Suzanna Clarke
My husband, Sandy McCutcheon and I are both writers and photographers. In 2005, we bought and renovated a riad which become the subject of my book, A House in Fez. Sandy’s most recent book is Through the Peacock Gate. In early 2018 we purchased our second house, Dar Malika (then named Dar El Hana), from an Australian friend, Josephine Kwan. She had bought it around the same time we had purchased our riad, so we had shared the trials and triumphs of the challenging renovation process. I also own and manage apartments in Bordeaux, France, and Apartment Lumière in the Fez Medina. Our staff and I will do everything possible to ensure your stay is an enjoyable one. We offer breakfast and dinner on request, and a selection of drinks and snacks for purchase. We can arrange transfers from the airport or train station, tours of the Medina, experiences such as a cooking, craft or Moroccan dance class, and a car and driver for trips further afield.

Why Suzanna Clarke chose Zekkak Er Roumane
I moved to Fez after falling in love with it while on holiday, and have now been here more than a decade. I bought Dar Malika (then named Dar El Hana) in March 2018, from an Australian friend. It has been a guesthouse for more than a decade, and is well set up for guests. I have added some extra touches to make it an even better base from which to enjoy the Fez Medina. I have had more than a decade of experience managing holiday rental properties in France. My team and I will do everything possible to assist your stay. In 2015, I co-founded the Medina Children’s Library, which aims to encourage a love of reading in the children of the Fez Medina. It operates entirely by private donation, and is only a couple of minutes’ walk from Dar Malika. Please come and visit! We run a blog, The View From Fez, which posts daily stories and features about local and national events in Morocco. If you are visiting France, please check out my website Bordeaux Apartments, which offers beautiful apartments in the historic centre of the Bordeaux, and characterful places to stay in the Dordogne.
What makes this House unique
Dar Malika is more than 300 years old, and originally belonged to the local Iman. Josephine renovated it with care and taste, and opened it as a guesthouse in 2006. It has had an excellent reputation as being a welcoming and comfortable place to stay, and we are continuing the tradition. Since we have owned Dar Malika, we have refreshed the decor and added some extra touches of luxury.

Great house in an ideal location
This was a great VRBO. The house is very comfortable and is literally in the middle of things in the Fez medina, but only a short walk out to the taxi stand or the main gate. Quiet at night and the rooftop deck is a cool and comfortable place to spend the evenings. Support and response from Si Mohamed and from Suzanna were exceptional. We were picked up from the train station and relayed to the house, where Si Mohamed showed us how things worked and where everything was, and arranged for breakfast each day. There was plenty of room for our family of five and the house is very well equipped and wonderfully furnished. This was one of our family's best experiences in renting a house.
I am delighted that these guests enjoyed their stay at Dar Malika so much. It is a lovely house, and we do our best to ensure guests are comfortable and have everything they need for a great stay.
Great location in the Medina!
Thanks a lot to Suzanna and her staff at Dar Malika - we (family with 3 kids) had a really good week in Fès! Everything was organized very well: the pick-up at the airport that we had asked for worked smoothly, we were very well received by the house manager Mohammed, and the dinner we had booked in the house already for the first evening was just marvelous!
The house itself is really nice, spacious and comfortable, our personal highlight being the rooftop terrace, where we relaxed in the afternoons. Another highlight was of course the wonderful breakfast, prepared by Mohammed every morning, and the dinners we booked in the house at three occasions!
Suzanna was very helpful and responsive at all times, thanks a lot! We can only recommend Dar Malika for a stay in Fès.
