About this property

Beautiful Cotswolds cottage in Charlbury - perfect for groups or families

Welcome to my lovely Cotswolds cottage in beautiful Charlbury old town, just a walk from the train station and bus stop. I recently refurbished it, keeping the original old beams and exposed stone walls and adding modern bathrooms and extremely comfortable hotel-style beds.

Update March 2024: I've just refurbished the kitchen and it now has underfloor heating, overhead infrared heating, new stove, flooring etc.

Jasmine Cottage is home to my daughter and me for some of the year. I rent it out when we are not there. Guests tell me it's a real home-away-from-home, which is exactly what I've tried to create. Complete with piano keyboard, guitar, books for all ages and games. And in winter, you can warm yourself sitting by the cosy wood burner... I swap the furniture around in winter so the sofas are by the woodburner.

You can walk everywhere in Charlbury... There are four pubs within a 3-minute walk. Two are destination gastro pubs with incredible seasonal and locally sourced food. The Co-op grocery store is open late 7 days a week, there's a lovely deli, a Brazlian restaurant, another cafe called Chloe's cafe which does delicious locally sourced food again, mostly salads etc... There is also a pharmacy, a pretty wooden play park for kids (with zip wire, swings, tennis courts, a gym, cricket club, see-saw and climbing areas, and a public library (including children's section), with friendly cafe and picnic area and sports hall. The train station and bus stop are also a short walk away...

With great access to London, Oxford and the rest of the Cotswolds, Charlbury is perfect for walkers, romantic weekends away or families of local residents coming to visit and wanting their own space. The house has a great entertaining space with a dining table that can seat 8. It can sleep 6 in four bedrooms (2 superking double bedrooms, and two smaller bedrooms with 'small double' beds which are comfy really for only one person each! So I count those two bedrooms as single bedrooms. The two larger bedrooms each have huge zip-and-link superking beds so comfy for couples.

If you have children, let me know if you'd like me to provide travel crib, high chair, toddler chair, books, board games etc.

I have a massive (11 ft x 8 ft) Spring free trampoline in the garden.
Use at your own risk - don't wear shoes on it but wear clean socks! Please weep off any leaves etc and keep it clean. My daughter is very proud of her trampoline and is keen that guests look after it as well as she does.

It's a 15-minute drive to Soho Farmhouse/ Daylesford/ Woodstock/ Blenheim Palace and 20 minutes to Burford. You can get there by bus or drive.

The house itself is a pretty, Cotswold stone cottage (c. 1890) in a terraced (i.e. not detached) row of similar stone cottages.

Here is a detailed summary of the house...

**
Ground floor:

- very large open plan living/eating area with 7 foot table, an old oak church pew (bench) and modern white chairs. Wood burning stove, TV, piano keyboard, 2 large sofas.

- fully equipped separate kitchen with Stoves range-style cooker with induction hob and three ovens, microwave, dishwasher, large fridge-freezer, French press for coffee, coffee bean grinder, milk frother, toaster, Quooker tap (gives filtered and boiling water)…

- patio with outside table and chairs to seat 8 people... and garden with lawn/grass. NB There are steps fro the patio up to the lawn (grass - about 50 metre sq) so small children will need supervising outside.

**
Middle (first) floor:

- Bedroom 2 - with super king zip and link bed, with extremely comfortable pocket sprung mattress, white linen and fresh white towels. Wardrobe and chest of drawers, 2 wall-mounted reading lights. Crib/cot can be set up here or in the top room (bedroom 1).

- Bedroom 3 – double bed (4'6") which I count as a single bed as it's not big! It has a table and chair ie a workspace, children's' books, view to the garden. No wardrobe.

- Bedroom 4 - with a large single (4' wide) bed which again I count as a single bed. This is a small room but super cute with a small bedside cupboard, but no wardrobe.

- Bathroom 1 – with brand new walk-in shower (rain head and also hand held shower head), basin and WC and underfloor heating

**
Top floor (attic, with eaves)
- Bedroom 1 - with super king zip and link bed, 2 small sets of of drawers which also serve as bedside tables, bedside lamps either side, hanging rail for clothes, black out lined roman blinds so you can lie in without being woken up the summer sun...

- En suite bathroom with very large bath (with microphone shower head ideal for washing hair while sitting in the bath), basin and WC.

Summarising things for children:

- High chair
- Toddler chair
- Plastic crockery and cutlery
- Night lights

About the host

Host profile image
I'm a music-loving mother of one gentle, music- and art loving 11-year old girl. I love travel, audiobooks, country air, home interiors, swimming... and above all my charismatic little daughter. I'm house proud and keep things rather clean and tidy, but I would hope that's a good thing! I live with my daughter and we spend some of our holidays here in our Cotswolds cottage and the rest of the time in central west London, in a house which I also rent out for short lets...

Why they chose this property

I love my house. It's calm and homely. It's a short walk to everything and you don't need a car - the two amazing gastro bubs - the Bell Inn and the Bull Inn, the deli, Chloe's cafe, the new Brazilian restaurant the grocery store (Co-op), gorgeous walks, woodlands etc.

Charlbury is very well connected and so a great place to base yourselves if you want to explore the rest of the Cotswolds. You can do it all without a car because both the train and bus stations are a few minutes' walk from the house.

It's been called the 'Notting Hill of the Cotswolds' and has attracted a lot of celebrities over the last few years, who dine at the wonderful Bull Inn just down the road.

It feels remote (at least from London) but you can jump on a train at Paddington and be walking through the front door in just over an hour

You can also get to Oxford easily by train and bus - and to Blenheim Palace, Daylesford and Soho Farmhouse. It's a 7-minute walk to the train station through St Mary's churchyard.

A note on the church - you'll hear the bell ring on the hour and also bell ringing practice on Thursday evenings from the house! We love that.

What makes this property unique

Charlbury is a great place from which to see the rest of Cotswolds. This little historic market town - which people refer to as a village - is quintessential Cotswolds, with Cotswolds stone houses, St Mary's church which dates back to the 12th century (you will hear church bells ring on the hour), the cosy deli (cafe), the 3 pubs within a 3-minute walk of the house, Chloe's cafe, the Brazian restaurant, the cricket club, the library, the playpark…

Charlbury is one of the few Cotswold towns to have a railway station. This connectedness to Oxford/London in one direction and Malvern/Bicester in the other makes it really unique.

Charlbury also has regular buses to Oxford, Witney, Woodstock, Chipping Norton, Bourton... If you are based in Charlbury, you don't need to have a car to explore the Cotswolds

Charlbury is very convenient for several music festivals - Wilderness Festival, Cornbury Festival, the Big Feastival (Kingham), Blenheim Palace events, Riverside Festival, Park Fair (Great Tew), Charlbury Beer Festival, Charlbury Street Fair, Moreton-in Marsh County Fair, Countryfile... And all the Art Weeks and open gardens in the area.
