About Paula Irving
We enjoy walking our two dogs on the beach and all around the small streets of the island. We love the proximity of the house to the Parker River Wildlife Refuge and to Newburyport for shopping, dining, and other activities. We enjoy cooking, so having Tendercrop Farm just down the road provides us with a great variety of gourmet meats and produce. In town we love the Sunday Farmer’s market at the Tannery; it’s a great place to pick up dinner and peruse the local bookstore and shops. Best of all when we don’t feel like cooking we can walk to the Plum Island Grille, Plum Island Provision, The Cottage, Mad Martha’s or the Beach Coma
Why Paula Irving chose Plum Island
After renting this house for two winters we fell in love with it and Plum Island. In fact, we liked it so much here that we bought the house. Now we’ve made Plum Island our home. In the summer we retreat to our lake house so we really have the best of both worlds.
What makes this House unique
The most distinct feature about the beach house is the roof-top deck with its breath-taking views of the island. Additionally, the house is located on a quiet side street (open at both ends), so there is very little traffic/noise and the yard is completely fenced-in which is ideal for families with small children or pets. It's a short two-minute walk to the closest beach path where the beach is rarely crowded.

Great Little Place!
Clean, comfy, near to beach, great views from rooftop porch, well-stocked kitchen, plenty of parking. Fun places to eat and all in walking distance, Parker River Preserve just down the road, a great place to visit, spend time on beach, fish. A bit tight for 5 adults and two toddlers, but all in all a good time. We'd come back!
Well kept and appointed vacation home, dog friendly
less than a 5 minute stroll to the beach. We chose this property because we wanted to vacation with our 2 Golden Retrievers. The Beach and community was the most dog friendly we have ever encountered, and our post labor day stay was delightful. The house is exceptionally well kept, and had everything we needed. Owners were exceptionally nice and helpfull. No complaints at all about anything. I really enjoyed staying here, and hope to return next year.
I grew up going to Plum Island in the summers with my parents. when my kids were young, we vacationed at Hampton Beach every year, and I always made a point to bring them to Plum Island. I never lost the love I had for it.
We have rented for the past ffour years here on the Southern end of the Blvd. We love the Island so much, that we came back again. this year we decided to take our two pets and wow, it was great!
Paula and John made sure that anything you could possibly want in a rental at the beach, was provided. I can't say enough, about have a great bathroom. The cottage was clean and updated, yet managed to keep that beach feel to it. We had a front porch, my favorite, to a back deck with seating and a grill, and oh let's not forget the roof top deck, where you can see from one end of the island to the other and also Newburyport.
The kitchen was a decent size and so very clean and had alot of amenities. We didn't cook much, but all you needed was there if you wanted to. Having laundry is so important at the beach and it made my week so much easier. We don't watch TV on vacation, but it was there, for the taking.
We love the Beachcomer, and this location was a short walk to everything including the best sandy beach. The beach is not rocky, which is a little uncommon in Massachusetts, one of the reasons, I love the it there.
We are going back again next year this time, for two weeks. thank you for your hospitality Paula & John!
We picked a particularly hot week to be on Plum Island and were very grateful for the comfortable air conditioning in the house. This home is very well maintained and stocked with everything we needed for our stay (sheets, towels, games and beach toys) The rooftop deck was an added bonus. We were up there every night to relax after the kids went to bed and enjoyed coffee up there in the mornings. The house is a 5-minute walk to the beach and there is plenty of off-street parking. We would certainly come back again and hope to do so!
A wonderful tradition
A special place, that is loved by many and well-maintained.
Perfect Vacation Spot
Photos and description are exactly as described - the cottage is well maintained and immaculately clean. Anything you might need is provided (bed linens, bath and beach towels, beach toys and boogie boards for the kids, books and board games for down time, well-stocked kitchen).
Things we especially enjoy:
- the roof top deck with views of the ocean on one side, and marsh on the other
- 5 minute walk to the beach
- back deck with grill, where we ate most of our meals
- 10 minute drive to downtown Newburyport - historic seaport with lots of shops and restaurants
Activities that we enjoy are going to the beach, kayaking, spending time at the Plum Island Refuge where you can enjoy the beach or do bird watching, and visiting Newburyport. The week passes too quickly.
I've been coming to this particular cottage for 9 years, and have just signed up for next year. It's always a pleasure to stay here.
Plum Island is a wonderful vacation spot for couples and families! The 9 mile stretch of beach is one of the most beautiful in the country. We take great pride in ensuring our beach house is idyllic and your vacation there is memorable.
On Plum Island itself, there are fishing, harbor, and whale watching expeditions (northern side of island); the Parker River Wildlife Refuge for bird watching (southern side of island); the Plum Island Grill (dinner); Beach Coma (casual lunch/dinner); Mad Martha's Beach Cafe (breakfast/lunch). In addition there's a convenience store, ice-cream shop and package store. The Plum Island Airport, on the causeway leading to the Island, provides aerial plane tours and a local RC clubs gathers there many Saturdays to fly and demonstrate their planes and jets (yes, there are Radio Controlled jets).
Newburyport is a just 3.5 miles away, where there are quaint shops, art galleries, outdoor concerts, live theatre, many restaurants, ample activities and special summer events. Great day trips include Boston, Gloucester, Rockport or historic Portsmouth, NH. There's something for everyone!
