It was nice to be in the beautiful countryside just out of busy Rotorua. The kids loved having the animals to feed. The house was well appointed and the host made us feel welcome
Great place in the countryside - we all enjoyed this. The animals are really friendly, and the kids loved feeding them. Close to attractions with really great hospitality; everything we needed was there.
We had a wonderful time - great location to all Rotorua attractions. Warm cosy, clean, access to animals and farm experience. Celia and John were the perfect hosts- friendly and very helpful with lots of suggestions if you want them. The kids and all of us really enjoyed our stay here. Thank you
From the handwritten welcome note on the blackboard to mingling with the farm animals this was a fantastic stay. The weather not so much but great views and lots of indoor activities provided by host. Celia was very accomodating and nothing was too much bother. We can’t wait to go back!
Enjoyed living the farm life while being close to the city. Fresh eggs, shortbread from grandma and milk for the morning coffee. Very nice host. Great family place
This location worked well for us. It was close to activities and town but quiet and relaxing. It’s an older farmhouse with animals to pet. (It’s not an updated modern place but the price reflects that.)
A lovely little home away from home for our family of five. The kids loved the toys, sharing a room, visiting the chooks and sheep, and jumping on the trampoline, and we loved having everything we needed for meals, a bathtub, and enough room.
We wanted some green and proximity to animals? It is exactly what we found in the confortable Shearer Retreat. We have been hosted perfectly. Such a nice break with the family!
Loved the warmth and comfort, quiet surrounds and the animals. Hot water pressure in shower a little low but an absolute minor thing with the positives outweighing this easily
Perfect for a weekend trip to Rotorua with a 7 year old
I was very glad to have booked this accommodation for my family's rainy weekend trip to Rotorua. My 7 year old niece absolutely loved staying here and hanging out with the farm animals, especially the friendly sheep - she couldn't stop talking about them on our drive back to Auckland. The host was lovely too, friendly and accommodating. House was very warm as well. Wifi slowed down every now and then, but wasn't an issue as we weren't there to be on our phones!
Fabulous stay. Thank you so much Celia! Our kids loved feeding the chickens and lamb. The simple trampoline and bars helped keep them outside. I just want to be back on that deck reading my book surrounded by glorious nature. Other highlights were the outdoor bath and toasting marshmallows under the stars. We thought we knew Rotorua well but Celia recommended some new gems. Hope to go back at some stage.
We enjoyed our stay. Quiet and spacious. You get what you pay for but everything one needs is there. It was nice for the kids to feed the animals. Fantastic host. Despite a personal emergency, the host still took the time to see us and help us with anything we needed. Recommend and we will be back. Thank you.
This is an old type house setting. Bach like. Basic and functional. So quiet and peaceful with sheep, donkeys and hens. Lovely for us all to get away from then fast pace of our lives and go back in time and have a simple holiday. It is close to all the Rotorua tourist attractions and great eating places. So there is the opportunity to be busy or quiet.

The Bach was ok.
The Bach was ok. It's actually more a shed then Bach. Rather cold and basic. Nothing special. To be honest: overpriced compared with other Baches..
This property isn't just for the kiddos! My group consisted of 3 adults and it was exactly what we needed after weeks of jumping between hostels. Property was clean, spacious, and all appliances worked as expected. We thoroughly enjoyed curling up on the couches and picking a move from the DVD collection in the evenings (a couple are scratched so you might be left hanging at the end). Another hidden gem of the property is how clear the night sky is! I 100% recommend grabbing a chair and watching for shooting starts and marveling at the Milky Way.The fresh eggs from their chickens every morning was a fabulous way to start the days for us as well. Wifi was spotty, but that just gave us the perfect excuse to check out the local coffee shop, Dynasti 3 Will definitely be staying here again if our travels bring us back to Rotorua!
Loved interacting with the animals! Close to town!
We stayed here for the last 10 days and had a great time. We loved to interact with the chicken, sheep, donkey’s & miniature horses. The owner provided us with apples for the donkey’s & miniature horses and feed for the chicken and sheep. Every morning, one of the chickens stopped by our back door for breakfast, we nicknamed him: “More” because he always seemed to want to eat more…The owner also provided us with fresh milk & eggs. The farm has is nicely appointed, plenty of space for a family, with everything that you would need for a relaxing stay in the country. Only 15 minutes away from Rotorua, so you’re close enough to enjoy all of the activities and still enjoy living in the country. For activities, we went to Redwood Altitude zip lines & tree walk, Redwoods Day & Nightlights Treewalk, Mitai Māori Village Cultural Experience & buffet, Forgotten World, Hell’s Gate Geothermal Mud Spa, Skyline 1/2 day Adventure pass: Gondola, Zipline, Luge & SkySwing, HOBBITON & Whakarewarewa - The Living Māori Village. Most awesome was ZORB, a whole different activity. So there is plenty of activities nearby.
As tungatuwhena what an embarrassment to New Zealand culture and heritage.
To be told the pull out couch is uncomfortable best just to sleep on the couch should have been the que to not staying there
Cheap warehouse crap quality sheets on the beds, duvet inners and quit covers obviously second hand op shop quality or no longer needed by the main home
The kitchen full of ,anything thing the main farm house or surrounding premises don’t want to use just dumped in this farm stay, no sharp knives to cut your tomatoes let alone your cheese.
The shower should be reviewed by health and safety it’s either so hot you get second degree burns or cold there was no way my children could shower without supervision
I’m disgusted that this farm who clearly use a community services card to use this farm stay as a tax eversion opportunity think that the inability to portray our county to what it is and ascend the message that hospitality is something farmers can’t do
How hard is it to show some bit of hospitality Such as “ we have not been able to sort the out door bath but if you want to give it a go, go ahead” why would I
FFS …… disappointment all way round
The retreat is a comfortable, family friendly, and easily warmed, place for a winter stay. The kids loved feeding the chooks and enjoyed the books and blocks etc. The kitchen is well kitted out for cooking your own meals. Celia, thank you for a lovely base for our family holiday.
