The house is a beautiful stone village house located in the center of the medieval village of Sablet in Vaucluse region of Provence France. Dating from the 17th century, the house has been beautifully renovated with all of the comforts of a modern home while retaining its authentic Provencal character and charm.

Located on a narrow street inside the walls of this quaint village, it is only a few steps from the house to the Church of St. Nazaire and the shops and restaurants of this Cotes du Rhone wine village.

The house is large (168 square meters/1808 square feet) and can comfortably accommodate six people. It is an ideal gathering place for family and friends for vacation, anniversaries, birthdays and reunions as well as an idyllic retreat for foodies, wine lovers, bikers, hikers, climbers, cyclists, artists and writers.

The house is three stories and has three bedrooms and three bathrooms. The windows are covered with shutters and original beams can be seen throughout. The house is tastefully decorated for comfort and convenience, and is centrally heated. Provencal artwork and hand painted pottery can be seen throughout the house.

The large well equipped kitchen has a beautiful oak table with seating for 8 people, making this a cozy area to savor meals using the wonderful fresh ingredients which are available throughout the region.

French doors lead out to the large terrace from the mezzanine and kitchen. Enjoy lunch or dinner, a pastis (the traditional Provençal aperitif; anise-flavored alcohol served over ice and diluted with water, which turns it milky white) or glass of local wine and dish of olives on the terrace while soaking up the Provençal sunshine. The terrace is furnished with table and chairs; there is a propane gas fired cook top for your use

Sablet is a small village (pop 1,200) located at the base of the jagged Dentelles de Montmirail west of Mont Ventoux in Vaucluse region of Provence France.

In Sablet, you will find charming and picturesque shaded streets adorned with flowers, passageways with exposed beams, fountains and stone village houses lined along the narrow streets which curl up in concentric circles to the Romanesque church of St. Nazaire (12th century).

Sablet is known for its production of Cotes du Rhone Village wine. The vineyards which surround the village were first cultivated by the Counts of Toulouse whom the area then belonged. During the 14th century, the vineyards became papal possessions when the papacy moved to Avignon.

Sablet is also famous for its book fair 'Journee du Livre de Sablet' celebrated in the center of the village the 3rd weekend of every July. Well known authors and literary enthusiasts from all over come to the village for book readings and signings.

Within 2 or 3 minutes walking distance from the house, you can find most everything you will require during your stay in the village; two boulangeries (bakeries), boucherie (butcher), two mini marts, a florist, a pharmacy, a tabac/presse (where you can buy local and Parisian daily newspapers and the International Herald Tribune), 2 hair salons, a bibliotheque (library), bank with ATM machine and post office.

A wonderful fish monger comes to the village and sets up a stall every Thursday morning in the main village square. You can find an amazing assortment of fish and seafood. An excellent fresh goat cheese maker visits the village and sets up a stand on Thursday morning along side the fish stall in the main village square.

In case of emergencies, there is a small health center with a physician and dentist on duty.

Near the entrance to the village on the road to Gigondas, you will find the tourist office or 'Syndicat d'Initiative' where you can find all the information you will need about touring the area. The tourist office is also the showcase for the local independent wine-makers who have the made the village famous; you can taste and buy their wines there.

In the main village square, there is a traditional village bar called Cafe des Sports; a good place to watch the world go by, gossip with the locals or read the paper while you enjoy your morning coffee. The jovial proprietor Bruno serves Fish & Chips every Friday evening. Bruno also owns the pizzeria right next door to the bar.

Within a few minutes drive, there are many other restaurants from simple establishments serving locally produced seasonal dishes along with traditional Provencal dishes to wonderful restaurants classified by Michelin as Bib Gourmand for their excellent price and quality.

We are Michel and Shirley Augsburger. We live in Sonoma County California north of San Francisco. I am CEO of Chancellor Health Care, a company which operates senior living communities. Shirley is a registered nurse and works on a neurology unit in a local hospital. I am a foodie and wino and love to cook and entertain. This led after many years of talking about it to opening a small French bistro called Bistro Des Copains in Occidental California which we operated for 9 years. We have two married daughters who have given us five wonderful grand children. As we say, we live for our kids and now for our grand kids. Our only 'child' at home is our very large but sweet Newfoundland named Abbi.

Why Michel Augsburger chose Sablet

My father was born in Lausanne Switzerland. His mother was French and they moved to the south of France when he was very young. He came to the United States just as world war II was starting to go to graduate school and met my mother. He ended up staying in the US and teaching in a university for many years. He left behind parents and sisters. As a family we came to visit quite often as I grew up and this has continued with my own family. His sisters married and lived in the south of France. So during the course of our visits to family members, I fell in love with Provence and the Vaucluse in particular. We love the small charming village of Sablet and its location up against the Dentelles de Montmirail, the village's accessibility and proximity to Avignon, Aix en Provence, Marseille, the Mediterranean and Montpellier.

What makes this house unique

We love the location in the center of the village and proximity to the cafes and shops, all within a five minute walk. We love the spaciousness of the house; a beautiful very old house but beautifully restored to modern comforts. Being a foodie and wino, I love the large well equipped kitchen with its adjoining terrace. I also love the wonderful street markets in Vaison la Romaine and Carpentras, both within 15 minutes drive. We are within walking distance of fabulous wineries in Sablet, Seguret and Gigondas. A few minutes drive will bring you to Vacqueyras, Chateauneuf-du-Pape, Rasteau and Cairanne. The roads in the area are wide and safe for bike riding and the great hiking trails abound in the area.

Noxious oil smell throughout house. No stars. Had to fill in a star to submit review.

Our family (2 parents, 2 adult children) stayed in this house for three weeks during June and July this summer. The house has an antiquated heating system that includes a giant oil storage container in a room on the ground floor. Something is wrong because the entire house was full of oil fumes even though we kept all the windows open to keep fresh air coming in. When we complained to the owner via email he said we must be very sensitive to smells, that no one had ever complained. This is not true. We met neighbors who said the house always reeks (on the outside of the house! and in the apartment above the house) and that they had complained to the owner before. This cannot be healthy. We would have moved but we had nowhere else to go (move a family to a hotel for 3 weeks?), and of course we had paid in advance. Additionally we arrived to find the main toilet leaking raw sewage all over the floor; it took a week and a half before it was repaired. Initially the owner implied this was also not true since they had been the last occupants. In a nutshell: if there is a problem in this house the owner will blame it on you.We spent our vacation outside the house as much as possible. We have rented about 20 other vacation homes, and this was our only negative experience ever. I would recommend that you not rent this home until the heating unit is totally replaced. (And of course, to be clear, we never turned on the heater because it was at least 90 degrees most days. The oily smell--like sticking you face in a bucket of turpentine--was constant.)

Owner's Response: We are very sorry that our guests were so unhappy with their sojourn at our home in Sablet. We take great pride in our Sablet home and furnish and maintain it far beyond what is normal for a rental house. As can be seen on the previous reviews, their experience is not the norm and we have taken steps to make sure it does not happen again. Since we live in Northern CA, we must rely on our local property managers and housekeepers to keep us informed about any issues they discover. When our guests reported to me that there was a problem with the toilet, I was surprised and responded accordingly because our property managers and housekeepers do a check after every guests and their checklist indicated all was in order with the bathrooms after the previous guests. When we did confirm there was a problem, we moved to get a plumber in to change out the toilet which occurred within a week which for rural France is very fast. There have not been ongoing odor problems as indicated on the previous reviews. We did have work done to update the heating system this past winter and one of the recommendations was that we vent to the street which was now required by law. We do want to avoid any future problems with getting issues addressed on a timely basis, we have engaged a new property manager who lives a few steps from our home. We believe this will improve guest service and satisfaction. We have upgraded WiFi so it is available throughout the house, installed handicap height toilets to make it easier for our elderly guests and are exploring the feasibility of converting from fioul heating to electric. We are committed to making sure our guests have a great experience living in our home.

A house in a small village

The house is extremely comfortable and well equipped. The only negative would be that the Internet had some issues.

The village has all of the essentials and we enjoyed cycling to nearby towns and villages.

We stayed for the month of August, and whilst some days were extremely hot, we enjoyed every minute of it.

Tranquillity Base

I like a lot of things about the charming old town of Sablet... I like the walk through the vineyards to Seguret, I like the local village life, the bakery, I like the comfortable home built in the 1600s, I like the fresh food purchased at the nearby outdoor markets and the opportunity to enjoy cooked in meals, but most of all I I enjoy the tranquillity of Sablet, reading in our bedroom balcony and watching the flight of the common swifts, and hearing the whirr of their wings as they swoop close...

Fond Memories

We were a party of 6 friends. This was the second time for four of us to stay at this lovely home. We loved our time in Sablet. We stayed a week and enjoyed every minute. Every day we would take day trips to visit the surrounding area. The lavender and sunflower fields were breathtaking. We cooked in every evening, after buying wonderful fresh produce at the outdoor markets in the nearby villages. We bought fresh bread and pastries for our breakfasts at the local bakery, which is just steps away from this home. Some in our group took daily walks around Sablet and through the vineyards just outside the town. We have such fond memories of our stay in this well appointed and comfortable home. We hope to visit again!

Lavender Days

Our party consisted of 3 couples who "bought into" one person's bucket list item of seeing the Lavender bloom in Provence. We chose to stay at this home in Sablet because it was fairly central to the lavender fields, in a small village with cobblestone streets, stores for what we needed, the house had 3 bedrooms and 3 baths and the owner is a "foodie" which meant that his kitchen would no doubt be wonderful. We were not disappointed in any way! Not only was the kitchen a dream but the whole house felt like the owners had thought of everything visiting guests would need. We were met by the folks who maintain the home; received a great, warm welcome; an orientation to the facility and good information about the town. One of our favorite places was the patio which has a retractable awning. You could sit outside any time of day and be comfortable. Built into the patio wall was an herb garden which we tended with loving care and used some of its bounty. The owners were great to work with and very prompt in responding to our questions.

Dreams do come true

I think I said it all in my review "a Perfect Dream" below. I can vouch for dreams coming true again. I so love this house and this village that I brought my cousins back this year during the Tour de France. We enjoyed everything again and then some. The house and terrace are the same wonderful places I loved last year. The villagers are just as welcoming and friendly, the owner and his on-site reps just as helpful. The one thing you should do in this house is cook. Every pan and pot is there, a huge library of locally oriented cookbooks, the fishmonger on Thursdays, the village market on Friday, a well stocked epicerie, a lovely butcher, the huge market in Viason-la-Romaine on Tuesdays, and a bottle or two from a nearby vineyard. Even if you don't think you'll cook, you will want to make this as much a part of the experience as seeing the Pont du Gard.
