About this property

Charming 125 Year Old Sewanee Home on Campus- Walk Everywhere!

WELCOME TO SIDEWAYS IN SEWANEE!

Sideways is a RUSTIC, but quaint little 3 bedroom, 2 bath house right smack in the middle of campus (the University of the South campus, that is). It's a 120+ year old gem of a cottage whose poor old bones just aren't as straight as they once were.

That said, as of March 2022, we added an ensuite bath where an old closet used to be and opened up the den to the kitchen dining area. We attempted as best we could to level her out, but that just proved beyond the scope. Back in April 2018, we also performed another little renovation, so if you've stayed here before or saw previous reviews about crazy bright paint colors, you'll be pleasantly surprised! It no longer looks like a box of crayons exploded inside. The renovation included fresh paint inside & out, a new tin roof, removal of the vinyl siding outside to go back to the original wood siding, updated light fixtures, a new deck, new operable windows with screens throughout, and a new sliding glass door and glass top front door that both help to let in a lot more natural light.

While a bit crooked it may be, it definitely won't let you down when it comes to offering you relaxation on a budget and a great location to reconnect with alumni and friends! It's located within walking distance to the local coffee shop (Stirling's) and the local bar (Shenanigan's, which added a 2nd story balcony in 2018), as well as countless hiking trails, golf course, tennis courts, lakes for fishing, and just about every University building.

It is NOT the Hilton. This is an OLD house that is used as a vacation home on available weekends by the owners and their families (all Sewanee grads) and looks more like a casual old vacation cabin than a fancy bed and breakfast, so please set your expectations accordingly. All beds are queens. It has a tub shower/combo and a walk-in shower, a Washer & Dryer and a great set of porches (one covered porch, one uncovered deck).

There is NO CABLE and the TV signals DO NOT REACH inside the house (we've tried rabbit ears, digital converter boxes, and fancy expensive solutions that don't work). There is a DVD Player, but you will not be able to watch live TV, so plan to watch any sports games from Shenanigan's, Blue Chair or the Sewanee Inn. There is WIFI in the house. However, our goal with the house is to get away from it all, especially screens, so hopefully that's what you like about Sewanee also.

Please EMAIL (don't call) for specific questions regarding renting. If we need to talk by phone, that's not a problem, but we will respond much faster by email. Pricing is an average of $315 per night with a 2-night minimum except during Commencement/Graduation each year. Due to the high demand, the rate for Commencement is $2500 flat rate for minimum 6 nights/7 days. We don't book more than 1 year out and all stays need to be affiliated with University “sponsored” events, which are wide-ranging. Send us a message if you’re unsure what that entails. If you’re there to enjoy the campus, visit a student, give patronage to Sewanee Village, or anything in between, then you’re all set to book with us.

WE REQUIRE A TWO-NIGHT MINIMUM STAY.

The property is located at 121 Palmetto Ave, Sewanee, TN 37375.

We look forward to letting you be a part of Sideways!

Great house and location, walking distance to campus
Spacious living area, open to kitchen. Perfect for a family or two couples. Read directions to house. It is is tucked behind another property so have to look for the driveway. Already have another stay planned.

Sewanee student drop off
Scott was excellent at communication when a problem occurred. He even let us arrive a night early with no charge to beat the snow. We enjoyed a snowy weekend! The campus was beautiful blanketed in snow and my boys enjoyed burgers on the grill when Clurg and restaurants were closed. Thank you Scott!

Very sweet historical cottage, perfectly located to campus
This is an ideal base if you are visiting students at Sewanee. It’s 5 min walk to Stirlong coffee shop and that area of campus. Perfect for dogs and hikes. Not far from Blue Chair end of campus as well. The beds are super comfortable and the bathrooms very clean and updated, we really enjoyed our stay. Exceptionally responsive host.we can’t recommend this property highly enough and really hope we get to return some weekend in the near future. Thank you!!

great central location. walking distance to shenanigans and anything on campus. needs a new screen door on side porch but we just used the front porch as the side porch is not screened in. does not have a dishwasher but well supplied kitchen otherwise. we stayed at this place in the past and it now has a master bathroom which is a great addition

Wedding weekend in Sewanee
Charming perfect cottage that was exactly as described. This cottage emulates what is so special about Sewanee….a chance to get away from the fast paced world and slow down to enjoy God’s creation, with belived family and friends. It was great for our daughter (Sewanee 2020 alum) to be able to get back on the mountain with college friends and this location made it easy for us to enjoy all of the wedding festivities and “walk home”.

Wonderful stay
We had a great stay at the house for graduation. It was close to all the campus parties. Easy walk to Stricklands for breakfast in the morning. We loved the screened in porch it protected us from the cicada invasion 😄. Not sure when we will be back to Sewanee since our son has graduated but would stay here again. As noted by the owners we were able to stream Netflix, Hulu on the tv but no live tv or YouTube TV so if this is important to you this may not be the house for you. They had an Amazon firestick. Laptops worked fine off the WiFi to do some work. Owners were awesome. YSR

Great house on Sewanee campus
It was a great stay. The house has a very authentic feel for the area. VRBO description advertised a hot tub and there wasn’t one, but other than that the house was perfect. It was well stocked with everything we needed and we loved the location.

About the host

Hosted by Scott and Andrea Evans

Host profile image
Scott Evans (C'98) purchased Sideways shortly after graduating from Sewanee and has enjoyed many nights and weekends there. He and his wife, Andrea, live in Nashville with their two daughters and pup named Cali. They also own the Lemon Fair in the village and welcome you to stop by for some gifts from the Mountain.

Why they chose this property

You can't beat a week or weekend in Sewanee. You'll leave feeling stress free and ready to come back again soon! It's a good family getaway or a couples retreat. Again, it's not fancy, but it's a rustic cabin close to everything. That's why we love it.

What makes this property unique

Eating at Shenanigan's, Stirling's and The Blue Chair. Hiking (the bookstore has a great book called 'Go Take A Hike' that is cheap and shows all of the great hikes in the area - pick up a copy when you're there!). If you're into high adventure, the Ocoee river is a decent drive, but doable. We don't rock climb, but for people who do there are apparently some good sites around. We don't have cable but do have some DVDs and a DVD player that likely works.
