Property type cottage
Minimum Stay 2 - 5 nights

About the property

4 BR 2 BA Cottage on Idyllic Long Pond, sleeps up to 9

Are you a nature lover? Apley House is the spot for you. You can see eagles flying overhead while you walk sandy trails that lead around cranberry bogs and wooded ponds. Enjoy swimming, fishing and boating from your own private beach on pristine Long Pond.

Apley House has hosted happy family vacations for over 80 years. It offers spacious housekeeping accommodations for up to 9 people. The cottage has four bedrooms, a country kitchen (renovated in 2016!), and a large, comfy living room with fireplace. Exterior gathering spaces include a screened porch in front, deck in back and a large yard with plenty of space for lawn games. There are two baths: downstairs has a spacious shower (new 2016) and laundry area (new 2016), the upstairs bath has a historic clawfoot tub with hand shower.

Situated in the middle of conservation land, this spacious summer home is perfect for people who enjoy water-sports and the outdoors. You can swim, fish and boat on one of Southeastern Massachusetts' pristine glacial lakes. Enjoy quiet strolls along woodland paths and visit the nearby historic sites in Plymouth and Cape Cod. Plus, Apley House is just a short drive away from shops, ocean beaches and Plymouth's great golf courses. Avoid wrangling with Cape Cod traffic and stay in Plymouth.

There's so much to do in the area: Swimming, fishing and boating are favorite activities on Long Pond. The lake is well-stocked each spring and there is a public boat ramp for access. Ample hiking and bicycling trails head into the Wildlands Trust properties next to the cottage and lead you through woods and cranberry bogs around Halfway and Gallows ponds. The scenery is magnificent. We've seen osprey, eagles, mink, and more. It's an easy drive to the near-by Plymouth and Cape Cod tourist sites; it takes about 15 minutes to drive to Plymouth Bay beaches and Plymouth Plantation. The Lower Cape beaches are about 45 minutes away and it is less than 3 miles to Pine Hills and many great Plymouth golf courses!

We have additional cottages and cabins about 1/2 mile away from Apley House. You can add these to your rental or take them individually as one, two or four bedrooms. We are occasionally able to accommodate larger groups (up to 35) in the entire property.

About Susan Conant

The property is currently owned jointly by five siblings, descendants of Lily and Richard Conant (grandparents) who inherited the property from a close family friend and Rick and Gerda (our parents). Our children are the fourth generation to summer on Long Pond. The photo shows our mom and her five children.

Susan Conant purchased this cottage in 1920

Why Susan Conant chose Plymouth

Although much of summer life on Long Pond is focused on the water, we love the woodland paths and walks that surround Apley House. Our family is committed to preservation of this area -- we donated 40 acres of woodland just next to the cottage to the Wildlands Trust and the State of Massachusetts recently acquired the property abutting the other property line.

What makes this cottage unique

You can walk from the yard of Apley House onto nature paths that take you by two neighboring ponds with magnificent views, eagle's nests and scenic cranberry bogs.

The house has all the classic details of an old summer cottage, simple but beautiful wood details, high ceilings on the main floor and cottage construction.

Guestbook comments from the manager

Dear Susan,

We had a lovely time at your cottage. Everything was clean and beautiful; nice linens, well stocked kitchen! You have a great place.

We especially enjoyed long mornings drinking our coffee by the pond.

Wonderful place, and the renovations just make it better!

  • 5 of 5

We had been here 3 years ago and loved it. The location is quiet and practically ON a nice trail system. The house speaks 'cottage', which we are very comfortable with. We were delighted with the upgrades! We want that kitchen in our house! Everything was done to preserve the look and feel of the original, and added a well-cared-for appearance. Altogether a nice, relaxing week in a very traditional cottage with well-done amenities.

Owner's Response: Thanks for your enthusiastic review of our cottage. During our renovations, we tried very hard to keep the "cottagey" feel while providing a comfortable, clean and easy-to-use kitchen. It is very gratifying to know that we succeeded! We love having guest like you who appreciate the unique and rare qualities that our traditional lake cottage setting provides. Thanks for coming -- please do visit us again in the future.

House needs updating

  • 3 of 5

My family stayed at the Apley House last summer. It was our first time in Plymouth, and although we had a great time, the house itself is in dire need of updating. The listing states it has an updated country kitchen, which is not the case, it has old cabinets, some drawers that the front would hang off, nothing is updated. Then there is the downstairs bathroom, it is so old, there were spiders in the corners, it had an awful mildew smell, the floor was a mess, it needed updating very badly as well. The family room and sun porch were nice, no complaints there. The beds in one of the bedrooms were awful, we had to carry the cushions from the couch and use them on top of the bed to make it comfortable. The outside lights at the back wouldn't work, they were sensor lights and would go on in the daytime but not at night, making it very hard to see coming from the driveway. There weren't even bulbs in the front outside lights. The area is very lovely and close to Boston and Salem, the easy access to the lake was great, they just need to put a little work into the house and it will be a true vacation dreamhouse.

Owner's Response: Thank you for taking the time to do such a careful review of Apley House. We have just completed a major update in the cottage this spring and are very excited to announce that the kitchen has been updated with all new cabinets, a granite countertop with bar, new flooring, new stove, new microwave, a country sink, new paint and a complete inventory of pots, pans, dishes and cooking utensils. We think it looks spectacular and hope that our guests love it. The downstairs bath has been re-configured to provide a spacious, tall shower. We moved the laundry out of the bathroom to allow for more room and provide a vanity counter with large mirror. The bath has all-new luxury vinyl plank flooring that will be easy to keep clean. The new, stacked washer and dryer is located in a laundry closet in the master bedroom. Upstairs, the front bedroom has a new, comfortable hybrid queen mattress and the large bedroom has been outfitted with two new twin mattresses and beds plus a memory-foam roll-away bed. There is new flooring and hand-held personal shower fixture (in claw foot tub) in upstairs bath. The house is thoroughly cleaned after each guest and we will continue to vigilantly treat for insects and any signs of mildew. Our pest control regime includes aggressive treatment but with products that are not harmful to humans. Please recognize that this is a non-winterized, non-climate controlled home and there are limitations compared to a permanent residence. Please note that the outside security light must be turned off during the day if you wish to keep it from illuminating as you pass by it. We supply plenty of extra light bulbs in case the ones in place happen to burn out. This home, built in 1915, retains a historic format. Throughout our renovations we have strived to keep its classic look and feel while providing a clean and functional facility.

Charming, peaceful, well equipped, centrally located and "felt like home". The location could not have been better for four southerners wanting to play New England tourist. Plimoth Plantation is just a few miles (aweswome), Boston Red Sox game was maybe 45 minutes, Salem, Gloucester, New Bedford....all a short drive and with hardly any traffic. The house is personable and cozy. There is not one thing missing. The porch was our planning location where we would sit at night and plan our next adventure. It was sooooo cars, planes, people, etc......just the sounds of night in a forest. We can't wait to go back. Thank you for sharing your home with us.

Beautiful Long Pond has clean, clear waters and a sandy bottom. With a high percentage of natural shoreline, the pond offers a peaceful respite. The landscape is covered in pine woods. Much of the property surrounding Apley House has been preserved as conservation land. You can walk for miles on the sandy trails.

All of the tourist sites, golf courses and beaches in Plymouth are very close -- less than 20 minutes away. You can access the Lower Cape within 1 hour and the Outer Cape is a hefty day trip.
