Peaceful Quiet Sunset Over Looking the Tennessee River

Bedrooms 3
Space 1,800 sq. ft.
Property type cabin
Minimum Stay 2 nights

About the property

Cabin, 3 Bedrooms, 2 Baths, (Sleeps 5-6)

The Dutton cabin is very secluded, peaceful and quiet with a view of the Tennessee River and Cumberland Plateau. Sunsets are spectacular. It is a double A Frame cabin right on the bluff with heart pine floors and rustic antiques, a stone fire place and a pool the color of a mountain spring. The birds in the Spring and wonderful, and the colors in the fall are intense - you will probably see an eagle cruising the river at the end of the day.

Sunsets are spectacular. There is a constant breeze on the bluff and the air conditioning is rarely needed. The property is a little over three acres and very private. A large field at the entrance with an orchard , plenty of room for soccer, football or just plain running. Also a good place to park a boat.

The area is full of places to hike and explore. It is close to DeSoto State Park and Little River Canyon, Cloudland Canyon, Mentone, Guntersville State Park, Buck's Pocket and the Walls of Jericho. Plus you are in the heart of several Wildlife Refuges. There are several places nearby for hunting in the fall and winter. Chattanooga and Huntsville are interesting cities within an hours drive.

About Beth M. Young

I work as a conservation photographer and have added land sales with Cyprus Partners to my tool belt. I love working with land. Headwaters: A Journey on Alabama Rivers is my first Alabama conservation book. There are many photographs from Jackson County that I made while staying at this cabin. The second book is Longleaf, Far as the Eye Can See.

Beth M. Young purchased this cabin in 1998

Why Beth M. Young chose Guntersville Lake

I purchased this place for the view and to be close to family.

What makes this cabin unique

The birds in the Spring are amazing. There is a pool just outside the door the color of a mountain spring. There is always a breeze so I rarely turn on the AC. With the windows open it is like being in a wooden tent. The fall is a wonderful with spacious skies and beautiful sunsets to match the intense fall colors.

Comfortable house in a beautiful part of the country

  • 4 of 5

After years of passing through the area on I-59 on the way to Chattanooga, we finally decided to explore NE Alabama. What a beautiful area! The house is situated on the side of a hill overlooking Scottboro and the Tennessee River. It has a plenty of room for a family of four to spread out. Our plan was to spend time relaxing at the house, but there was so much to do in the immediate area it became our home base for explorations of the area. If you go, do not miss Cathedral Caverns. The word "awesome" has been devalued over the years, but the caverns are truly awesome. There's plenty of hiking trails, and rock climbing: Lake Guntersville State Park to the south, and Little River Canyon and Desoto Falls to the east. The towns of Mentone and Fort Payne are nice stops. And Chattanooga is about an hour north. We really enjoyed our stay!

Disappointed in Dutton Cabin and Owner Responsibility to Renter

  • 1 of 5

The cabin had a very stale, smoky and musty smell to it so we opened the doors and windows. We noticed that the fireplace had old and stale ashes that had not been cleaned. One of the reasons we chose the Dutton Cabin was because of the inviting description of the pool and pool deck, all the amenities and the view. As we looked around we noticed that the pool was not clean. On the bottom of the pool was trash, leaves and sticks, on top floating was leaves, sticks and a dead mouse. It was quite obvious that the pool was not ready for guests. When we called the Owner to ask about the condition of the pool her response was “I live in Birmingham I can not come and fix the problem,” she was not helpful or she did not try to accommodate us in any way. We could not find any equipment to clean the pool. So that afternoon we sat out on the porch off the den because the adirondack chairs (4) that were advertised by the pool were not there or anywhere that we could find. We also had to contact the Owner again for the password for the Wi-Fi and she explained that we would automatically be connected upon entering the house. No password was given to us so we had no Wi-Fi. which was listed in the amenities. We explained to her that all four of our cell phones were not connecting (without a password) and again she said that she could not help us. The kitchen was well supplied with what we needed however when we went to use a sharp cutting knife we found that all of the knives had rust on the blades. When it was time to take a shower there was hair that did not belong to any of us in both bathrooms. So, as bad as it sounds, none of us took a shower or bath all weekend. To top things off the last evening we decided to rent a DVD as a listed amenity for the property it stated that the cabin had a DVD player. Well, the cabin does have a DVD player but we could never figure out how to get power to it and there were no instructions anywhere. There were four of us very intelligent, very capable ladies trying to make the DVD player work and we couldn’t. We called the Owner again to see if she could help us. The Owner basically shared with us again that she couldn’t help us and that it wasn’t her problem. No instructions were found anywhere.

The Dutton Cabin was not as advertised and the owner was less than cooperative when we had concerns about the cabin and our weekend. We would not recommend the cabin for anyone to rent.

This lovely, welcoming home was as described.

  • 5 of 5

We loved staying at the Dutton home! We felt at home when we entered the front door....the view was breathtaking from atop the mountain! The owner was easy to contact and responded quickly to my email and texts. The bed was so comfortable and we loved all the unique artwork and unique furnishings in the Dutton Home. We thoroughly enjoyed visiting the Space Center in Huntsville AL. We love the quaint mountain town of Mentone with all the unique shops and the Wildflower Cafe' . We love Scottsboro and the Unclaimed Luggage Store. Looking for a warm welcoming place with breathtaking views away from hectic big cities, where you can hike, boat on the Tennessee River, shop or just relax in the pool the Dutton Home is ideal!
