Overview

About the property

House, 3 Bedrooms + Convertible bed(s), 3 Baths, (Sleeps 6-8)

Sweet Wind is a West Indian style home that sits just above secluded Hurricane Hole. The villa is very private, quiet and secluded, being in the Nat. Park, but it's just 1/2 mile from Coral Bay which sports live music most nights, shopping and fine or informal dining. Just a short walk down there's a pebble beach with good snorkeling and there are 4 kayaks available to explore the 5 bays that include Hurricane Hole. I designed and built the place in the more traditional West Indian style of 3 individual buildings with large decks connecting them. The main house being the kitchen, living room, and dinning room. There is a bedroom and bathroom attached via a private deck on the West side of the main house. On the East side of the main house there is a 3rd building, housing 2 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms with a large deck in between w/ dining table and lounge chairs. All the rooms have views, you feel like you are floating right over the ocean, and this layout makes them very private.A lot of love and care went into designing Sweet Wind, it's my own private art gallery, with hardwood floors, Purple Heart cabinets, fine dishes, antique furniture, local treasures and a bit of humor. There are two separate decks for complete privacy. One of the showers is outside, built with beautiful rock work. The bedrooms are in separate buildings,or pods which adds to the beauty and privacy. There is a lovely grotto behind the villa with an amazing stone retaining wall 9' tall and 100' long running all along the back side, that has the BBQ, orchids, flowers and herbs, and an outside shower. The villa has gates at both entrances that keep the wild donkeys out and children in. You wake up to a amazing sunrise above Hurricane Hole. This is the most protected harbor in the Caribbean, and we look out over the Coral Reef National Monument, so there is no overnight mooring allowed unless there is a storm warning. Sweet Wind is very quiet and private but just 1/2 a mile from town and you don't hear all the music and noise from Coral Bay

I think the photos say it all, Nina.

About Nina Hahler

I live with my dog Lucy here in beautiful Hurricane Hole. I am a painter and a musician. I use oils, pastels and watercolours, and enjoy playing the mandolin, banjo and slide guitar. I had a salmon troller for most of my life and fished out of Sitka Alaska.

Nina Hahler purchased this house in 2001

Why Nina Hahler chose USVI/St. John

Sweet Wind is just above Hurricane Hole in the National Park and overlooks Coral Reef National Monument. Boats can not overnight moor in the Coral Reef Nat. Monument and there are almost no other houses in view. Park trailheads are a short walk away, and It's very quiet and peaceful here, the view is amazing, and still close to town. The snorkeling and kayaking available here at Sweet Wind in Hurricane Hole make this a special place for outdoor enthusiasts.

What makes this house unique

The house is a West Indian style with hip roofs, three pods with private decks between, with greenheart floors, cyprus wainscoting and antique Caribbean furniture. The full kitchen has beautiful antique caribbean style purple heart cabinets with stone countertops. Open the back kitchen door and there is a lovely grotto, with a gas barbeque and a potted garden full of herbs herbs and spices. The villa affords great views and privacy. The views from most every room feel like you are floating over the ocean, all you see is water and Nat. park land. It is breathtaking and amazingly private. You hear no noise from the bands in Coral Bay.

Hands down the best vacation we have ever been on. The views and water are absolutely breathtaking!

  • 5 of 5

This was our first visit to St. John and after staying at Sweet Wind, there is no other place we want to go. We really took advantage of what Nina had to offer and it was an incredible experience. She has sea kayaks free for you to use and because of that, two of our vacation days we spent kayaking all across Hurricane Hole and discovered several completely secluded and GORGEOUS little beaches that we had all to ourselves.

The view is so incredible that I never could sleep in!!! I woke up each morning BEFORE sunrise in anticipation of the beauty that was about to be displayed before me, made my coffee and then sat out on the balcony waiting. It never disappointed.

Sweet Wind felt just like home and was perfect for us. The outdoor shower is amazing and beautiful! Feels so nice to shower in the warmth of the sun surrounded by the beautiful foliage Nina has around it.

Nina is just next door if you need her, but leaves you alone if you desire. We went over several times on our own to engage with her and she is a hoot! She was always super friendly and outgoing - we spent several nights sharing stories, singing, and probably keeping her up later than she would have liked (sorry Nina!!). We felt immediately as though Sweet Wind was like a second home to us and cannot wait to return!!! Next time we will bring our kiddos and show them all that Sweet Wind and the island of St. John has to offer!

We feel completely connected to Sweet Wind!! Sorry Nina - I think you've gained some regulars and may not be able to get rid of us now!! Haha!!

View and location was phenomenal!

  • 2 of 5

Unfortunately the beds were old and mattresses very soft. The electric fans did not work and the portable fans were way too noisy and one was filthy. Also we had no Wi-Fi or TV.

Spectacular views, great location, and a unique villa we will always remember...

  • 5 of 5

My partner and I spent a week at Sweet Wind at the end of May, and it was absolutely wonderful. The place has, if possible, even more sweeping views of Hurricane Hole and the east side of St. John than the photos are able to capture, and the bougainvillea and other tropical plants that Nina grows on the property are lovely as well. We visited St. John primarily for snorkeling, and Coral Bay is a terrific location for anyone interested in snorkeling such sites as Waterlemon Cay and Maho Bay in the north, Haulover Bay and Hansen Bay to the west and Salt Pond/Tektite/Yawzi Point to the south. It is a short (though sometimes adventurous! definitely rent a high clearance vehicle if you want to go to Great Lameshur and Little Lameshur bays!) drive to any of these beaches, and there is also mangrove snorkeling in the some of the bays right in front of the house. We enjoyed exploring the island during the day, then returning to Sweet Wind in the late afternoon to enjoy the refreshing trade winds, which blow across the deck and cool the house every evening (and help keep the bugs away).

Sweet Wind itself is a beautiful villa that Nina herself designed and decorated, and we loved the woodwork and the thoughtful details such as the nautically themed door and cabinet handles, original paintings, stained-glass lamps, and stonework in the outdoor shower (nothing is more wonderful than taking an outdoor shower in a stone grotto after swimming and snorkeling all day!) The kitchen is well-stocked with all the dishes and cookware you could want, as well as some general condiments, sugar, salt, etc., and we ended up eating at Sweet Wind most of the time we were there just because we loved the views so much.

We also had the chance to spend an evening with the owner of the property, Nina Hahler, who is a talented artist, musician and architect with a fascinating history. We really enjoyed playing music with her and talking out on the beautiful deck she built for her own house (shaped like a ship's prow), and meeting the dogs and baby fawn she was caring for after a recent flood. Overall, we had an absolutely wonderful stay, and definitely hope to return someday, perhaps with friends (Sweet Wind also has three separate guest rooms with en suite bathrooms, each of which has access to a deck and the same breathtaking views, and it would be a great place for 2 or 3 couples to stay together).

Thanks, Nina, for your hospitality and generosity! We'll be in touch!

The best place we have ever stayed on St. John. Beautiful house. Incredible views!!

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful time exploring and beaching on St. John. Coming back to Sweet Winds every afternoon was just perfect. It was very comfortable and peaceful. We were four adults and the layout of the house afforded us plenty of privacy when we wanted and a nice place to gather. It has a nice outdoor shower and a beautiful patio and stone walled area behind the house. The kayaks are just down from the house with easy access to Hurricane Hole. We all thought is was the best spot on the island. Nina is a great host. One night we hung out and played music with her and had a memorable time. I would highly recommend Sweet Winds to everyone . We can't wait to go back!

Gorgeous view. Convenient to Coral Bay food & drink. Secluded but owner nearby.

  • 5 of 5

We've visited Coral Bay Area three times and this was the best. If you are looking to get away from it all but still have good food and drink nearby this place is hard to beat. We kayaked and snorkeled and lazed on the deck and listened to the 70s era vinyl and BBQ'd and went to the Indigo Grill and Skinny Legs and countless beaches. For two couples it was perfect. Nina was always available if we had any questions. Nice breeze and moon reflecting on the water liking across to the unspoiled parkland. Was hard to leave.

Great location! Spectacular view! And very cool house!

  • 5 of 5

We only stayed 3 nights, but would definitely recommend this as a great location to spend any length stay on St. John. Nina lives right there next door and she designed this very cool West Indies style bungalow. The house was very clean and with nice detail going into the design and décor. There was also access to snorkel and beach chairs which we put to good use, as well as kayaks down by the small beach below the house which we didn't get time to use in the adjacent cove. Located near Coral bay, this house is on the quiet side of the island, but there are a few dining options ranging in price, with our favorite being Skinny Legs for the beach bar style atmosphere and burgers, plus there are small groceries on that side. Make sure to stock up on bottled water for drinking, as with many Virgin Island properties, the tap water is via rain cisterns. Access to the amazing north shore beaches is convenient, with Maho, Cinnamon, and Trunk (get there early to park) all providing great views, calm clear water, and amazing snorkeling. It's about 30 minutes to Cruz Bay where the ferries dock, along with the plenty of shopping, dining, and car rentals.
