You must have a four wheel drive, road was rocky as expected. Good gravel & rain runoff good. Floors were a little dirty, socks showed it, but also to be expected. Bathroom toilet sure needs to be tightened to the floor. Hot tub was excellent & clean. Remember to use the turn around at the top, it makes getting in the right direction a lot better.

Overall a good experience. Definitely nice and secluded. 4 wheel drive 100% required! I did not realize check in was offsite back in town so had to drive all the way back down the mountain to go check in. But maybe i missed that in an email somewhere. I would say the worst part of the property is the toilet situation. It moves around so much plus the door hits it. Other than that, it was a nice property. The contact was very responsive!

Remote Mountain Vacation

This property was just as advertised. It was about 3/4 of a mile up a mountain and remote. The hot tub was fantastic and we had a little bonfire. A couple of things to make sure of is that your vehicle is a 4x4 because the road to get there is difficult. Also if you are bringing dogs there is a small grass patch out back but there is also a steep mountain drop so make sure to bring leashes if your dogs aren’t used to mountains. Overall this was just what we needed and we loved our stay.

True to it's title

Roughin' It can be rough to get to up the gravel road, but is well worth it if you want seclusion and privacy for you and your group. The wife and I loved the cabin and don't really have any complaints on it. The hot tub and porch swing were perfect to relaxe and listen to nature. I guess the only thing that could be added would be a washer and dryer for longer staying guest like we were. You have to travel a bit to get to a nicer laundromat. We had a really good time getting away and exploring the North Carolina Smokys.

Secluded Mountain Cabin

This cabin is incredibly peaceful and beautifully located on the side of a mountain. The cabin itself is well laid out with two bedrooms and a loft, offering plenty of room for a family. However, be prepared: the cabin has a strong, unpleasant smell. Bring air fresheners and candles. Only a few windows have screens, making it hard to air out. The coffee pot also made terrible-tasting coffee—I ended up buying one during the trip, so definitely bring your own to avoid that extra cost. You must have a 4WD vehicle to get there. I off-road my Jeep Wrangler, and this was still a challenge! It takes about 5 minutes to get off the mountain, so bring everything you need with you.

Roughin It cabin

We stayed at the Roughin It cabn. The cabin smelled of mold and mildew, but the loft smelled the worst. There were dog hairs in the bed of the first bedroom The bed in the other bedroom smelled of human spit or slobber. We killed 3 spiders in cabin. We left after 3 nights. Would appreciate the damage deposit returned to us. If there had been access to a washer and dryer, I would have left the bedding and towels clean.

We appreciated receiving your candid review regarding your recent visit to Roughin ‘it. To be honest, this is the first complaint we have had of this nature at this home. We have received comments regarding the wildlife in the area and the rustic-ness of the cabin, however we do address that in the property description by saying it is a rustic, mountain cabin and in a completely remote wooded setting. Contrary to your observations, we received a five-star review of the home just before and directly after your arrival and departure. We would like to address the issues you have mentioned. As for spider webs and cobwebs in the home. This house is on a quarterly pest control service, however being in a rustic home in a rural wooded area, spider webs and other insects pop up on a daily basis, particularly during the summer months. For this home, with full foliage around the property, cobwebs and spiders occur as a part of nature. As it states in the listing, this is a rustic home in a mountain setting. Although we do our best to prevent these issues from happening, unfortunately if we are not in the home right before check in, we can’t. As to the laundry and housekeeping, our housekeeping team are top notch and clean each home with care and pride. They use hospital grade anti-viricides and disinfectants to thoroughly clean each of our rental homes and we have an in-house laundry that does our linen service for each home, including Roughin’ it. We had also had a large amount of rain and as this sits in a wooded area, there will be a slight damp smell from the cabin logs that might occur. In addressing these points, we would like to stress you chose not to notify us of any of these issues with the home, either upon your arrival, during your stay or when you departed early. Your deposit was returned to you promptly You could have called on either our regular office number manned 9am-5pm or on our 24-hour emergency line, both of which are prominent in all of our collateral material – including in your check in information which states “Problems, Concerns, Don’t Wait, CALL US! We want your visit to go as smoothly as possible and we are here for you. Give us a call if you run into any issues or concerns at any point during your visit. We can be reached Monday – Friday 9:00am - 5:00pm, 828-926-4270 After Hours and Weekends Emergency, 828-400-4007” To that point, you robbed us of the any opportunity to rectify the situation and make it right immediately, which we would have been more than happy to do, given the issues you have described here. Again, we hate that you didn’t feel the need to reach out and have these issues addressed until after your departure and your review here and on Google, but we appreciate your feedback and will use it to improve our services. Thank you for your comments.

Fall Getaway

This was a much needed getaway to the mountains and we enjoyed our stay at the cabin. It was very cute and comfortable. The hot tub was clean and we enjoyed it. I loved that we were high enough to have cooler temperatures after leaving the city where it was warmer. The view from the porch is not a long range view but it is nice. We enjoyed just looking at nature while sitting on the porch. My husband also had fun exploring and watching the creek during the day. It is a nice sound to hear while on the porch. The DISH TV reception was always working as well as the internet. As for the road and driveway you will need a four wheel drive to get up the driveway to the cabin. While my GMC Acadia SUV did make it up Longbranch road the drive way to the cabin was in rough condition and we had to park at the bottom of the driveway and lug our things up it. The walk up while steep was doable but not ideal. Even after all of this we decided to stay an extra night. The driveway is scheduled to be reworked and providing that it is done we would try to stay here again.

Roughin it

My wife and I really enjoyed our 3 day getaway at Roughin it. We loved the privacy and peace and quiet. It was clean, bed was comfortable. Kitchen was adequately equipped We would recommend it, especially if you like quiet The following are not complaints, just some things we noticed, that others might like to be aware of. The directions getting to the property could use another sign where you turn off of the "main dirt road". There are other properties listed for the turn, but not roughin it, so we missed it. You should probably have a AWD or 4WD to get there-especially if raining or snow. Cable TV and Internet are pretty slow. TV was pretty much unwatchable-as it was "rebooting" way more often than actual watching. If you have kids, KEEP AN EYE on them while they might be near the hot tub area. There are no railing under the bench seats, and kids can easily fall off the deck. Our dog actually did fall off-but was not hurt.

WORDY BUT WORTH THE READ

I’d like to share our recent experience at the “Roughin’ It” cabin in Maggie Valley, NC, which had its ups and downs.First, I want to commend Maggie Mountain Vacations for their excellent management. Tammy was particularly helpful, reaching out two weeks before our stay to confirm our reservation and inform us about a temporary DirectTV issue. Although we faced problems with our original cabin, they offered an alternative, albeit a significant downgrade, and we encountered heating issues on our first night.Regarding the cabin itself, be warned: a 4x4 vehicle is necessary for accessing the property. Our AWD vehicle struggled with the mountain road, as many reviews have indicated.Sadly, our stay was marred by several issues. We had no hot water for our entire visit, which was frustrating for our family. Additionally, we dealt with a mouse problem that resulted in lost snacks, forcing us to store food in the fridge and microwave. The kitchen sink drain was also disconnected, leading to leaks and unpleasant odors. My husband managed to fix it, but that shouldn't have been necessary. In summary, while the management company was fantastic, the “Roughin’ It” cabin needs significant repairs before it’s ready for guests. Until the hot water and mouse issues are resolved, we believe it should not be rented out.On a positive note, the homeowner issued us a refund, and we only had to pay for the less desirable cabin

Nice stay, but wouldn’t stay again

Booked for a little couples getaway and mental recharge. Overall, the cabin had all the amenities we needed to be comfortable, but wasn’t really what we expected or were looking for. Cabin had a very moldy smell. I ended up getting sick the day we left. Furniture is very old and run down, however bed was comfortable. MUST have a good AWD/4WD vehicle to get up to the cabin. Road up was extremely rough. I would never go in winter, even with a good car. Pond was over sold. It was a ditch with water. Also check in process was a pain. We had to drive to the rental office to pick up directions that could have been emailed and would have saved time and gas. Also, you have to remove your own trash, which was also annoying at the end of a trip when you just want to head out. The rental office was not on our way home, so we were stuck with trash on the drive home. That be a major pain if staying more than a long weekend. Views from the cabin were nothing to ride home about. However, that being said, we still enjoyed our trip and made the best of it. The purpose was to spend time together and go off the grid, and that we did. Cabin area was quiet and secluded. Hot tub was older, but clean and relaxing. Kitchen was well stocked with cooking items. If you do go, must visit Maggie Valley Sandwich shop. It was delicious. Publix grocery store wasn’t too far and was also close to the start of the Blue Ridge Parkway and Soco falls.

The and the bad

Overall, we had a peaceful stay at this cabin. The area was quiet and you could hear the creek from the front porch. My family and I enjoyed having coffee on the front porch and relaxing in the hot tub. The cabin was cute and fit our family of 5 just fine! There were some very notable things however, that would cause us not to stay here again. First, the road going to the cabin. We were warned by reading the listing info, as well as the management office calling us to let us know we would need 4 wheel drive to go up the road of the cabin. We have a big four wheel drive truck, so we were prepared. However even with a four wheel drive truck, the road is just plain ridiculous. It was a pain in the butt every time we had to go up and down it. One of the days we even popped a tired coming down. It took a whole day off our vacation because we had to sit in a tire shop and get that fixed. Also, You’re supposed to have a four wheel drive vehicle to get there, but there’s hardly enough room to turn around once you get to the top. Next, the cleanliness. There was a Cheeto bag in the living room. The basket in the bathroom that held the hairdryer had dead bugs in it as well as dust caked in the back of the hairdryer. There were cob webs on the ceiling and the light fixture upstairs was full of dead bugs. And last, when we went into the closet between the bedrooms to see if there were extra blankets, there was a can of bed bug spray, which although the beds appeared clean, did not make us feel good to see. There was no phone signal at all, which would not be a big prb if the Wi-Fi worked. But the Wi-Fi was not working the entirety of our stay. That made it frustrating because we couldn’t look up anything we needed for our stay, but more importantly, we weren’t able to make a phone call if needed. Last, we had to stop by the vacation office to get a packet of directions to the cabin because gps won’t take you there. We wish they would have just emailed us the info in the packet. After using their directions the first time, We ended up just dropping a pin on our phone’s map app to get there with our gps every time, which was much easier. Despite all the negative, we still enjoyed our stay, which speaks volumes for the cabins potential. Would we stay here again? No. However if some of these things were fixed we would definitely consider it because the peaceful surroundings and privacy were well worth it.

Thank you for your candid review of Roughin' it, our vacation rental cabin. We try to make sure folks are aware this is a rustic cabin high in the mountains and things such as cobwebs etc., can apprear at any time. We are very transparent regarding the road, the rusticness of the home and the road's travelability but unfortunately a popped tire could have been for numerous reasons, the same as with internet service which we tried to get rectified for you as quickly as we could. Unfortunately, situations such as these do happen from time to time. We have passed your comments on to the owner as well. We hope you will choose to visit us a again in the future!
