Excellent property with space for everyone

  • 4 of 5

We stayed here recently for 1 week as a multi-generational family (10), with the ages ranging from 10-73. Prior to our arrival, communication about the house and other aspects of our stay were responded to very quickly and everything was seamless. Cynthia met us at the house and did a brief walk-through, pointing out how to use the TV, sound system, etc. She left her text and was available to answer any questions that came up. The house is in an area that is being developed so there is some noise, but there were a bunch of birds around as well as monkeys that would cruise the treetops nearly every morning (usually letting us know they were present ~5:30am with their howls).

The bedrooms are huge, the beds are nice, and there is plenty of common space to hang out in. We cooked most evenings and there are enough pots/pans/utensils to get any job done. As well, there is a small gas grill (an upgrade on this front would be nice, but it certainly works) in the back that we cooked mahi fillets and chicken on. We usually started our day in the pool around 6am or so and usually finished our day in the pool as well. Beach Club access is nice for a change of pace and it costs $10 but that is recouped by ordering drinks (food as well, but we never made it past the drinks page) and the $10 applies to your bill. I would strongly recommend some of the nearby beaches like Langosta (essentially empty and a great 2 mile walk) and Avellana ("busy" but beautiful) - great waves. There is also a beach within walking distance of the house (near the yellow pillars to the north) which has cool tidal pools etc. Plus, check out Lola's restaurant (Avellana) - beautiful extra-casual beach restaurant with extremely fresh seafood. Also, on the way to town, stop at the fruit stand for fresh and very reasonably priced fruit/produce (about 75% cheaper than AutoMercado).

We also rented the golf cart which was nice to have as it is an easy spin down to the Beach Club or the JW and fun for the teenagers to drive people back and forth. Overall, this was a great house for everyone and we had a great time experiencing a little pura vida at Casa Marbellla!

Def not the view we expected. Bldg crews directly behind and across the street, no privacy and loud!

The house is very nice. There is some general maintenance needed, such as there was an exterior door behind the kitchen with large exterior gaps all around it, leaving a pillage of ants and other flying insects throughout the house. Electricity is also questionable with several blackouts, I guess common with this area, but frightening for small children in a strange house. The lighting leaves much to be desired esp in the vanity areas and closets. No ice maker in Frig. The beds were comfortable and the rooms were spacious. I really think had it not been for the constant noise of construction all around, this would have been much more relaxing. But as the owner didn't divulge this, we were stuck with unusable decks and views. The pool was nice and maintained well. The Beach Club was nice and fun for the kids. We didn't see any monkeys in the trees but plenty of iguanas. Plan on spending some time driving to town as the roads must be navigated around gigantic potholes, at least 30 minutes to Tamarindo. The owner also doesn't allow toilet paper discarded in toilets, which was gross, r/t sewage issues I guess. A very redeeming quality of this trip was the property manager, Cynthia. She was absolutely the best. Easy to understand and helped with the ant situation and sewage smell. She also contacted the building contractor behind our home to thwart their working on Saturday, leaving us at least TWO DAYS w/o noise. A very big thanks to her.....:) Navigating to this property was very time consuming and stressful. We were not given much direction with the maps we had.

Also prepare to be stopped by Costa Rican Security with AK 47's as we were. Guess we looked like drug lords... All in all, I probably wont return to this country, but I appreciate the learning experience... I think.

Owner's Response: The home guest specified that was causing some noise was two months behind schedule and is NOW COMPLETED AS OF JULY 15, 2018. Our guests were under the impression that there is a view of a lake from the house which is not shown or mentioned. We have views of the garden , and are steps, 3 minutes walk to a charming beach , wonderful tide pools for play and sunsets.. Regarding the building near our home, the new neighbor assured me that this home would be completed by late May so I was not to know that Karla would be affected. The disappointments, complaints unfortunately were completely beyond our control, and this is Costa Rica, a third world country where electricity cutoffs at certain times of year are common due to weather but last very short periods of time. Unpaved roads of which there is one for about 1 mile does get potholes at certain times of year.. due to rain . Police checks are a good thing to keep the country safe, and nothing to be alarmed about.. Regarding the fridge, there IS an ice maker, and it's inaccurate and unacceptable to say we do not allow toilet paper in the toilets.. hygiene products and diapers are a different matter which have clogged our toilets. The ants were dealt with right away , they came in due to the beginning of the rain season, as well as a temporary odor , which was taken care of that same day. We have never had any complaints about directions to the house and communication with our manager was available at all times . Our feeling is that this guest was not prepared for a Costa Rican vacation and faulted us with her review about issues of which 90% was beyond our control.

Great house and location for large group, with room to spread out.

  • 4 of 5

Just returned from our family trip to Costa Rica. We had a great time, the house was a perfect place to relax and spend time together. We needed a large space for 7 adults and 6 children ages 13 -17 months. We had room for those who needed space to themselves once in a while, but plenty of room to come together to play games or watch a movie. Anyone who didn't participate had another living room for relaxing and visiting. The pool is nice, cool and refreshing when it is so warm outside. There is lots of room outside for sunbathing and visiting.

Communication with Diana was great & helpful. Cynthia (concierge) was wonderful, responded to every question we had and helped us plan a great trip to a volcano and hot springs area. She was very helpful when our littlest one got ill, needed some medical attention and pointed us to a local English speaking pharmacist, (the pharmacist realized the baby needed a Dr, they made a call to the local Dr (close by) to explain and the Dr waited for us. He examined the baby and prescribed the medications she needed, and we returned to the Farmacia where the pharmacist filled the RX and then wrote out in English the directions).

The home was well supplied with bath towels and beach towels. The kitchen was well supplied for a large group and a gas grill on the patio. There is a crib, pack & play and a seat that serves as a high chair if needed for an infant.

The golf cart is available for rent and came in handy going back and forth to the beach and the beach club. The beach club is nice and has both sand and surf, the ability to shower off and use the large pool. Although they charge $10 per person, that amount can go toward food or drinks at the bar. Children under 12 are free. We really enjoyed the time we spent there.

The AutoMercado grocery in Tamarindo had lots of options for food, especially if you have children who might be picky about eating certain things. It has many American brands.

If you go 2 things I would definitely recommend taking:

1) BUG SPRAY for your body and USE IT EVERY time you go to the beach. WE all got many bug bites and they itch like crazy. (take the afterbite stuff too)

2) lightweight clothesline and clothespins for swim suits and towels (especially when coming back from the beach)

FYI the neighborhood is expanding, but the sounds of construction were not too annoying, and they have a fence so you still have some privacy. Thanks for helping us make memories to last our lifetime!

Owner's Response: Thank you Shelle for your positive review. We are so happy your group and family had an awesome time despite the worry with the baby getting ill. We are so pleased our manager and pharmacist were able to help and resolve your concerns and refer you to a good pediatrician.. So yes, bug spray is a must especially at dusk . We forget that we are in the tropics and bug spray, hats and sunscreen are very important as well as water bottles that have a 24 hour cold keeping factor. We always take ours so we always have cold water on hand. We hope you return again to Costa Rica. Pura Vida!! Diana and Peter

Beautiful property, perfect for large groups

  • 5 of 5

Casa Marabella is a wonderful property and a great setting for a large group seeking a well equipped and spacious vacation rental. Owner Diana and property manager Cynthia both did everything possible to make our family vacation (8 adults, 1 child) in Hacienda Pinilla an outstanding experience. The house is as advertised: two enormous master bedrooms with king beds on the second level plus a small double bedroom; two king/queen bedrooms on the main floor and a very small single bedroom off the kitchen. The two master bedrooms have "ensuite" bathrooms, while the two larger bedrooms on the main level have a "Jack and Jill" bathroom that those bedrooms share. There is a full bath across the hall from those bedrooms so as many as four bedrooms can have their own private bathroom facilities. The dining adjacent to the kitchen easily seats 10 people, and although we did not use it, there is a formal dining room that seats 6-8. The kitchen is spacious with tons of counter space and cabinets with just about everything you need in the way of dishes, glasses, plates, utensils, cookware, etc. There were a variety of spices that have been accumulated from prior renters, and while it won't include everything you might need, you have most of the basics at your disposal. The pool area is nice, although we didn't use it very much as our group preferred the Beach Club location. Additionally, there is an enormous home being built on the lot behind Casa Marabella and construction workers are present six days a week - as a result, privacy in the pool area was not as great as we would have liked. The property is a short walk away from a nice (smaller) beach that is great for exploring in the morning as the tide pools form when the tide recedes. This is not, however, a swimming beach. The beach located adjacent to the Beach Club is fabulous - wide sandy stretches of beach, warm and clear water, great waves for surfing and for body surfing. The Beach Club itself is quite nice, with a large pool, beach bar and restaurant. Although there is a $10 per person charge to use the Beach Club facilities, you are able to apply that fee to offset the cost of drinks and food you buy at the Beach Club. We found the food to be quite good, and the cost of food and drinks not excessive - we were easily able to offset our entry fees on the days we used the Club. Lastly, we hired the cooks to make dinner 5 of our 7 nights - they were great to work with and we loved the food! Pura Vida!

Our stay here was nice!

  • 4 of 5

I brought my husband here to stay in this great house for his birthday. The chef was awesome and our driver Ivan I couldn't say in words how wonderful he was in taking us to all the places we needed to go. The house is gorgeous however we didn't have the pleasure in having Cynthia due to she was out of town and did her best in assisting us from a far. We had a couple of issues though Cynthia handled them very well and we appreciate it so much.
