About Maria Miller

Our family has been coming to Belize for ten years. It is now our most frequent vacation destination.

Maria Miller purchased this house in 2010

Why Maria Miller chose Belize

We fell in love with the tranquil, get-away-from-it-all atmosphere, the beauty of the pristine beaches, and the friendly people of Hopkins Village. We know you will fall in love with it, too!

What makes this house unique

What we like most about our home is simply relaxing on a quiet, secluded beach with the sun warming us and the crystal waves and ocean breezes cooling our tanned bodies. There is plenty to do and great places to eat!

Guestbook comments from the owner

From our guestbook: We've had a wonderful week! Hopkins and this house were great spots to celebrate Kathy's birthday and a great base for experiencing this beautiful part of Belize. Kathy actually thought we were tent camping on the beach so was completely surprised and amazed when we walked into the house! We enjoyed long paddles on the ocean and river, hiking in Cockscomb and Mayflower parks, snorkeling out on the reef, biking around town, hanging out with the drummers at Lebeha, and sampling some of the excellent Hopkins cuisine.

Thanks to Maria and Chris for sharing your lovely home, and to Janette and the whole team who maintain and safeguard this beautiful property. Special thanks to the spectacular wildlife. Particular favorites were the dolphins, and reef fish, the orange iguanas along the river, toucans and the fantastic variety of other bird species we encountered...and, of course, Chunko and Cash!

5 stars for house and neighborhood

  • 4 of 5

This house and immediate vicinity are top class. There's a sense of space, relaxation and privacy that's rare to find, anywhere! Direct access to the sand and sea acts like a magnet every morning. We went the last week of July, early August, and the weather was just fine - warm and sunny. It was humid - but the house has a great a/c and plenty of ceiling fans.

Simply put - this house was great. Well equipped, well stocked, well managed. One of the best experiences we've ever had - absolutely no complaints.

Read the info guide that the owners provide - you can trust it, all good advice.

Sunrise was just after 5am and sunset around 7pm. The water was in the 80s, a bit too warm for swimmers, but can't complain! The water is at it's clearest and calmest in the morning - you can easily do 500m laps in front of the house.

Access to Mayan Ruins is good - about 2hrs each way, but easy driving. The reserve is about 40mins and offers miles of great hiking. Bring plenty of water though!

Here's what surprised us: This house is located in Sittee Point which (apparently) is a separate place to Hopkins (not sure???). This area is nice with a lot of new homes and small enclave type resorts. Hopkins is the opposite - it's not a cool place! If you're not prepared you'll be shocked! It's very poor and first impressions are awful - poor, dirty, shanty style. BUT - give it a few days, keep an open mind and you'll start to uncover some of the town.

The supermarkets are fine - you can get just about anything that you need. However, groceries are expensive and the stores are restocked once per week. We're milk junkies (teenage boy...), but the town ran out of fresh milk on Tuesday evening. Thursday seems to be the delivery day - so stock up on fresh items when you see them.

Cost: Belize is not cheap! Seems there's a big disconnect between the locals expectations and reality! Probably a hangover from boom times... BUT - take your time, chat with the locals in Sittee and Hopkins and you'll find some fairness!

EG: Happy Go Lucky Tours - Lucky and his deckhand Tyler are Great - very cool guys and they're fair with prices. We had a full day charter - can't say enough good about them.

Ruins: My tip: Drive yourself! Get to the river crossing and negotiate with a local guide.

Overall - Great house. Great vicinity. Perfect escape for us. Safe, Fun, Private.

Spot on.. exactly as described!

Beautiful home with a huge rooftop deck for star gazing...Well stocked kitchen and personal ac in each room. Janette, property manager, was very attentive and scheduled fabulous tours like snorkeling the reef with Beaver and climbing Mayan ruins/cave tubing with Charlton. She also had our golf cart waiting at the property and we rode into town daily stopping at Innies restaurant and meeting Alex the local designer/sculpter. I was also delighted to find locally made t-shirts and pottery at Janette 's place, Diversity Cafe.

Spacious, clean and homey!

  • 5 of 5

We arrived at night, we drove from the airport in Belize City. It was a long drive and the roads/turns are not marked very well. Once we found Jeannette, we followed her the rest of the way to the property and she showed us around. The home is beautiful, the master bedroom is huge with a large attached bath. The kitchen really did have everything we needed. My younger son used the blow up bed and was comfortable in that. The air conditioning works great when you need it. We spent most of our time out on the patio in the chairs reading and enjoying the view. My older son (16) used the kayak and caught a barracuda!

We ate at Hamanasi Restaurant twice, it was suberb! The resort is beautiful! We kept meaning to go walk around in the day time, but found it difficult to leave the porch at the house!

We ate at Lucky Lobster two or three times. The manager is super friendly, and this is a great place to go for casual dining.

We enjoyed Barracuda Bar and Grill the first night we were there. This was the only place we actually walked to. The food was great and was wonderful being outside on the patio to enjoy the sunset.

One night, we went to the Paddle House at the Jaguar Reef for the taco bar. It was very good and a nice atmosphere.

We found Caitlin's Bakery and visited her twice. We loved buying out her whole inventory of carrot muffins to keep at the house for breakfast!

One day we went out the the reef with Happy Go Luckie Tours. We had a wonderful time fishing and snorkeling. The water is crystal clear and saw so many beautiful things. Luckie and crew were great and made us a great lunch from the fish we caught earlier.

The house was wonderful, peaceful and had everything we needed. The next time I will pack less clothes and just bring more food from home for breakfasts and lunches as the 'grocery' stores leave a little bit to be desired in selection.

relaxing

We just spent 24 days in Belize and our first 4 were at this home. This place was amazing from the home to the ocean setting to the people of Hopkins you couldnt ask for a nicer and safer community We ate somewhere local every night and talked to the friendly people that live in Hopkins. If you want to see what america should be like visit this town people helping people. Your manger is a great lady who was always nearby to answer my questions. My wife and i travel pretty much full time and when i write a review i usually have suggestion on something to change but in your case other than the great security that patrols all night the beach and streets which didnt seem needed keep doing what you doing. Thanks for allowing us to use your great home larry Betsy David Melinda

Absolutely Wonderful!!

Not a single thing could have been better than it was!!!!

Private beach which is quiet and peaceful. Kayak for use, a beach you can wade into.

The house was immaculate, had appliances while not needed were very handy, such as dishwasher and clothes dryer and washer, which allowed us to decreased our planned luggage.

The kitchen had what we needed for cooking. The location is awesome for ocean or jungle activities. It also was splendid just for getting some peace and reflection.
