About this property
Single family home, but space for 2 families or multigenerational stays!
Looking for a restful vacation, with just enough to keep the family entertained, but not be overwhelmed with crowds and traffic? Located on a quiet island, just off the North Carolina Coast, this comfortable, 3 bedroom, 4 bath home is over 2300 square feet.
***A caveat.....This is a private home, in a private subdivision. Parking is challenging and somewhat limited. There is space in the driveway for maybe 3/4 vehicles, depending on size or type of vehicle - car/truck/SUV but requires some "stacking".....
My HOA JUST (Jan 15, 2026!!) modified the rules!!!! There is no longer ANY parking on the street. My apologies for this challenge to your vacation. You may wish to contact the neighboring marina - Homer's Marina in Salter Path to park a boat trailer.
But better news!...This house has 2 unique features - it is sound front with a private walkway through the woods to the private pier into the sound. (more on that in a bit). And it has 2 separate living areas - the top (3rd) floor is the main living area (more details to come!) while the ground floor is a great room with queen futon and dressers, and living area with couch, loveseat, entertainment center, full bath,( perfect for when folks need a little space, or quiet, or you have teens or a couple who would like a little privacy)
A few more details -The top (3rd!) floor is the main living area, opening onto a sound front deck, with Adirondack chairs, and a grill. (and great views!) The interior includes an open space. fully stocked kitchen, counter bar with 4 seats, dining area that seats 8, a full bath, and 2 separate seating areas! The main seating area includes traditional seating (couch, 2 side chairs), a large screen LG smart TV - (there is Spectrum internet to operate TV's, games, etc.). Off to the side, also facing the sound, is a reading/sleeping area. It has a queen sized sleeper futon, and 2 comfortable chairs and a bookshelf - (this is a public space and offers NO privacy - perfect for teens or kids, or the early riser in the family).
The kitchen is equipped with all standard appliances and dishes/silverware, pots and pans for feeding your crowd. You will also find enough basics - paper towels, TP, paper plates/cups, dish soap, laundry soap, coffee, sugar, etc. -(you get the picture!) so you don't need to dash off to the store.
The middle floor has 3 bedrooms and 2 full baths. - complete with towels and clean linens! All bedrooms come with flatscreen TV's with Roku/internet access. (Please use your own credentials for specialty TV channels) The master has a queen sized bed and a 4 piece, ensuite, with jetted tub and 5 foot shower! The 2nd bedroom also has a queen sized bed. Both open onto the middle sound side deck with outdoor seating. The 3rd bedroom has a bunk with a "full" sized bottom and a single upper. These bedrooms 2 and 3 share a nice sized full bath. The washer and dryer are on this floor for handy access.
The ground floor can be used almost as a separate suite. It has a queen sized sleeper futon, a full bath, and a separate TV/living area with sofa and loveseat, as well as access to the backyard. It has interior stairs to the top 2 floors but if needed, the other floors can be accessed by the outside decks..
The home's private pier leads to the sound for fishing, clamming, sailing. It is too shallow for larger speedboats, and too much serious fishing - except maybe at high tide (3 ft max). (We do NOT provide any recreational vehicles......) There is a local marina just 1 mile away in Salter Path (Indian Beach) where you launch water vehicles....and a rental place for kayaks, jet skis etc. less than 2 miles away. The sound is shallow particularly during the summer but reaches 4 feet at high tide in the fall. - swimming, kayaking, safe for kids -"entertaining" fishing - small fish and mullet, or crabs...but you have the pier all to yourself with no competition from other folks!
And there's more!....Entertainment!
The ocean/beach access is just 3 tenths of a mile away in Salter Path. It is recommended that folks with small children drive and make the 3 minute trip with toys, chairs, etc. since it is on the main road. It is a well-kept secret, because even on holiday weekends, it is easy to find parking and a 'spot' on the beach with some space to spread out your towels, and family - no "elbow to elbow", listening to someone else's music. It has outside showers, restrooms, and grills, and a good number of parking spaces, many of which are shaded. The beach is wide and sandy, and the water has a gradual slope out, providing lots of safe places to swim and skim board. (The house has an outside shower with hot and cold water to rinse off sandy feet.)
The North Carolina Aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores is just 2 miles away and provides wonderful viewing, touch tanks, nature trails, as well as programs for all age levels!
A small amusement park and 2 theaters are within a few minutes drive and provide change of pace activities when you a need a break from the sun, sea and salt. There are also golf courses -https://www.emeraldislerealty.com/blog/top-emerald-isle-nc-area-golf-courses
Everything you would need for a quiet vacation is less than 15 minutes away
Morehead City, Cape Carteret, and Beaufort are small nearby (less than 20 miles!) towns with lots of charm, as well as art galleries, local museums, antique stores and upscale shopping. New Bern, NC - the first NC state capital- is 45 minutes away and has a real castle, and many historic amenities.
I'm so sorry, for the rules, and we do not wish to be rude or unwelcoming, but.....
Because we are in a quiet subdivision, with an active HOA, we have to be careful with our tenants. WE DO NOT RENT TO GROUPS OF UNRELATED FOLKS.
(AND. YOU MAY NOT PARK IN ANY NEIGHBOR'S DRIVE WHETHER THEY APPEAR TO BE AT HOME OR NOT!)

About the host
Hosted by Jane Shrader
We are retired teachers, living in Eastern North Carolina...We have a large family and spent our summer vacations renting cottages that we shared with our best friends,.. up and down the North Carolina coast. We had 7 children between us! This island was the best place for our kids! and our families! Beautiful water, - ocean on one side, sound on the other - lots of naturalist things to do!
So when we got the chance to build fresh in Indian Beach we took it.
So when we got the chance to build fresh in Indian Beach we took it.
Why they chose this property
We chose this neighborhood because we loved the location! So convenient! Yet so isolated! The subdivision was new and ours was one of the first 5 homes built in the subdivision in the early 2,000's. We had access to the water to build a pier, yet only 5 minutes from a lovely ocean access! And educational, yet "touristy" activities were short distances away.
We have been the only rental in this small private subdivision until recently. Which means, no crowds, no cars, no late night partiers. It makes it great for folks just wanting a quiet vacation with their kids.
And we had been in the area often enough to know the ocean here to be perfect, even on the roughest of days and we have felt safe for our small children (and now grandchildren!) to play in the ocean - easy sloped sand down to the water, and shallow enough, even out a couple sandbars for elementary kids to play and "surf". The town beach is rarely crowded, and always clean and well maintained.
Being "soundside" allows us waterfront access with a pier, and great sunset views. It is a great - and safe - place for children to play in the water, (unfortunately it may be as shallow as 6 inches, low tide, mid-summer - but great to launch kayaks and other inflatables!.. kids can walk on the sandy bottom for some distance.) You can fish from our pier, although it is best suited for beginners. (We have recently learned that fall and spring tides and fish migration will occasionally bring larger fish into our area....but not to be counted on!)
Salter Path has a couple excellent restaurants !.And we love the easy access to local dining and entertainment without fighting the crowds.

What makes this property unique
We designed the house to share with friends. The extra living area on the first floor has been ideal for kids, teenagers, young couples, or grandparents. It allows folks to spread out a little and do their own thing. Complete with its own full bath, sleeper futon, entertainment center - It works as a "noise reducer" when you don't have so many folks talking at once. Even the 3rd floor has 2 separate spaces for friends to slide away from the TV to talk and catch up, while others watch sports, or their favorite shows.
And the house was built for our growing children - to have space for them at every age.... and enough space to be together for meals, but have some down time, quiet time at others. As they grew and were older- they were free to head to the beach in a group because it was close by, but we could play safely in the sound with the littlies.
The location at the center of the island is rarely crowded, and we have privacy in our subdivision - no condos, large buildings sitting on top of one another. We can play in our backyard, wander in the sound, but have easy access to a small amusement park, the state aquarium, and several historical sites. Deep sea fishing and charters are near-by, and lots of local restaurants.
The "reverse" design -putting the living area on the top floor - allows for great views, and a sense of wonder, living above the noise. You really feel like you are away from it all.
