About the property

House, 3 Bedrooms + Convertible bed(s), 4 Baths, (Sleeps 7-11)

Want a restful vacation, with just enough to keep the family entertained, but not be overwhelmed with crowds and traffic? Located on a quiet island, just off the North Carolina Coast, this comfortable, 3 bedroom, 4 bath home is over 2300 square feet.

TV's with DISH access are in every room, all linens -sheets and towels- are provided at no extra charge. The wireless internet functions throughout the house.

The first floor has its own full bath, and is a game room with sleeping area, ideal for young couples or teens. It has an entertainment center with DISH access. A queen sized futon provides sleeping quarters.

The middle floor has 3 bedrooms and 2 full baths. The master has a queen sized bed and a 4 piece, ensuite, with jetted tub and 4 foot shower! The 2nd bedroom also has a queen sized bed and TV with DISH access. Both open onto the sound side deck. The 3rd bedroom has a bunk with a "full" sized bottom and a single upper.

The top floor is open design with lots of views. It includes the kitchen, dining area, reading area, TV area. DISH satellite and internet are provided. There is plenty of eating area for 10 people and comes with all of the standard amenities. It also has a full bath and extra futon for overflow guests. A standard gas grill is provided. There is also a gas fireplace for cool weather vacationing. The outside deck has views of the sound, the island and the ocean, complete with deck height Adirondack chairs.

The pace on this 20 mile island is laid back, but the area provides many family-oriented amenities. There is a NC Aquarium 2 miles away with programs and scheduled activities. Day trips are easily available to light houses and outer banks picnicking. There are even a couple golf courses less than 30 minutes away. Local restaurants specialize in fresh caught seafood, but provide choices for all landlubbers. Any last minute needs are nearby in major chain stores, top line grocery stores, a regional hospital or walk-in and emergency medical care without the big city, tourist center craziness.

The home's private pier leads to the sound for fishing, clamming, sailing. It is a little shallow for larger speedboats, except at high tide, but it is great for small children, sailing, kayaking, jet skis, and sunset viewing.

The ocean access is .3 mile away in Salter Path. It is a well-kept secret, because even on holiday weekends, it is easy to find a 'spot' with some space to spread out your towels, and family - no 'elbow to elbow, listening to someone else's music'. It has outside showers, restrooms, and grills. The beach is wide and sandy, and the water has a gradual slope out, providing lots of safe places to swim and skim board. (The house has an enclosed outside shower with hot and cold water to rinse off sandy feet.)

A small amusement park and 2 theaters within a few minutes drive provide change of pace activities when you a need a break from the sun, sea and salt.

Everything you would need for a quiet vacation is less than 15 minutes away, with options for shopping, antiquing, water sports, amusement park, and golf - all less than 30 minutes away.

Morehead City and Beaufort are small nearby (less than 20 miles!) towns with lots of charm, as well as art galleries, local museums, antique stores and upscale shopping. New Bern, NC is 45 minutes away and has a real castle, and many historic amenities.

About Jane Shrader

We are teachers with a large family, children and grandchildren!

Jane Shrader purchased this house in 2001

Why Jane Shrader chose Salter Path

We have always loved this series of beaches best! We have vacationed on the beaches, from the Virginia to the South Carolina borders. But we have found the water here to be perfect, even on the roughest of days and we have felt safe. It is rarely crowded, and the beaches are always clean and well maintained.

What makes this house unique

The center of the island is rarely crowded, and we have privacy in our subdivision. We can play in our backyard, wander in the sound, but have easy access to a small amusement park, the state aquarium, and several historical sites. Deep sea fishing and charters are near-by, and lots of local restaurants.

Great Summer Stay

  • 4 of 5

This house fit our needs perfectly for three separate families. The bottom floor was perfect for two teenage boys to hang out and sleep until noon without being bothered. The pier was great for fishing and catching flounder, crabs and other small fish.

All the bedrooms and living areas were very clean and well kept. The towels and linens were in abundance and very clean as well. The owner was easy to contact with any questions we had about the property or surrounding area. We only wish the weather had been more cooperative. We will most certainly keep this place in mind for future stays.

Great stay

  • 4 of 5

We really enjoyed the stay. The house was great. The only reason I gave it 4 stars was because of the lack of access at the end of the dock, to access the sound. The stairs/wooden ladder seen in the pictures appear to have been removed by Mother Nature. The way the owner maintains the home I'm sure that will will replaced soon enough. Thanks again for sharing your home with us.

Owner's Response: The last couple storms must have taken out the steps! So sorry! The sound can get surprisingly violent during bad weather! We will see to the steps as soon as possible!

Picture this - the island is 20 miles long.....Atlantic Beach is at one end, and Emerald Isle is the other. My house is dead center......the area is known both as Salter Path (the historical name) and Indian Beach (the legal name).....Within .3 miles of the house is a nice public ocean beach access, 2 fully equipped marinas on the sound (you may rent jet skis, kayaks, or small power boats)....there are currently 4 local seafood restaurants.....there is a small amusement park with 2 miniature golf courses, a little train, an arcade, bumper boats, and a race track.

And small crowds.

We feel this is one of the best kept secrets and fabulous vacation spots on the east coast.

You can actually catch some smaller fish off our pier, particularly during high tide. The sound is shallow in this area, and sometimes less than a foot is clear with a sandy bottom, and a great place to play and discover sea life. Even the dolphins have been seen cruising the channels less than 30 yards from the end of the pier.

The ocean at Salter Path is incredible. The water rolls out in long, low sand bars. The beach is wide enough for lots of sand castle building, volleyball, and sleeping. It has the most perfect slopes for skim boarding and safe enough for the youngest shell collectors. At the right time of year, surf fishing is popular.

The state aquarium is at Pine Knoll Shores - less than 3 miles from the house......they honor family memberships from most major attractions (state zoo, etc) offers many programs during the summer, including some guided canoeing trips, island adventures. I would encourage you to just google 'NC Aquariums' and you can check schedules and make arrangements before you arrive. Activities do fill up during peak times.

At the tip of the island toward Atlantic Beach (12 miles) is Fort Macon State Park.....It has a civil war fort and some re-enactments and displays (it is small, but nice) it also has spectacular ocean access with views of the port....this is where the best deep-water fishing would be from the beach.

Just off the island (12 to 15 miles) in either Morehead City or Beaufort, are small local museums - Beaufort has a quaint water front with some art galleries, and excellent dining, and a hand-made boat making shop. You can also rent charters to visit some of the more remote outer islands. There is a mid-sized cruise ship that offers dinner cruises.

It all depends on how much you want to do. Life is on a smaller scale in this area, but you have access to chain grocery stores at each entrance to the island, as well as trusty Walmart. There is a theater at each end of the island that offers current run movies and you can find bike rentals, kite rentals,.......It all depends on how much you want to do.

If you want to venture a little farther afield, New Bern, NC is about an hour away, and has a castle, and antiques, and lots of history......and if you are feeling REALLY adventuresome, you can drive to Harker's Island (about 25 miles) and take a ferry to Cape Lookout National Seashore to visit the lighthouse.

And yes, if you 'google' golf courses near Atlantic Beach NC..... you will find there are 5 within 20 miles.....

We chose to build in this area, having been to Myrtle Beach, North Myrtle Beach, and the 'Outer Banks' because this is certainly quieter, less hectic, smaller scale....But there are enough activities to do every day, that you could find yourself not sitting and resting.....
