About Lee Jernigan

My wife Susan and I built this home in 1997. We live in Augusta Georgia which is only 150 mi away and went to Edisto for the easy access to offshore fishing which we love to do.

We now have 2 beautiful children, which our interest have changed some, and now we simply enjoy the family time with friends there.

Lee Jernigan purchased this house in 1997

Why Lee Jernigan chose Edisto Beach

We love hosting families and entertaining. We hope you will find that this home is well stocked kitchen and clean. Please let us know if you have suggestions for improving hospitality or improving the comfort of our beach house.

What makes this house unique

Collecting shark teeth on the beach and biking on the island trails and parks. Also the fishing and crabbing. One of the best things to enjoy is learning about the turtles on this island. Turtles lay eggs May-June. Many hatchlings have been spotted on the front beach around Late August - Oct. It is a glorious site if you are lucky enough to be on the beach when a nest hatches!

Great American Eclipse

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at this beautiful home for the eclipse. It was comfortable, well appointed, and close enough to Charleston (<1 hour) to enjoy some time there as well. The island is great, and we enjoyed some evenings and mornings at the beach. Remember to bring garage bags, as there was only one at the house and none at the Bi Lo!

Riki DeLamar

Our son got married on the ocean at Edisto beach just steps away from Lee and Susan's home (Susie by the sea). We spent a lovely 3 days there, the house was absolutely beautiful - the pictures on line do not do it justice! We had the wedding dinner in the backyard as planned, the weather was perfect. We couldn't have asked for a better experience. Will definately consider going back again. Lee was very responsive to all the emails as we were trying to get the wedding coordinated. (We had 3 other small family units in the house with us; but we had several other groups of family members also rent homes in the area). I wish we could have stayed longer!

Perfect house and location !

  • 5 of 5

We truly enjoyed our stay at Edisto beach at Susie by the sea ! The house is stunning ,tastefully decorated ,spacious, located just a short walk from the beach and near the restaurants .This house is the winner ,home owners are great people to deal and to communicate with .We felt safe and right at home .My little girls ( ages 8 and 4 ) loved it so much they did not want to leave ! They asked me if we can relocate this house to North Carolina or to buy it and stay forever at the beach ! We would love to rent this house again .Thank you !

Amazing house!

  • 5 of 5

Spent a glorious week at Susie-by-the Sea. Beautifully decorated and comfortable house-- which was bigger than we expected! Open layout makes it easy to entertain larger group. Table seats 6-8 plus 8 counter stools allowing our group to all eat together. Large TV and comfy sectional to nestle in and watch the Olympics. Large outdoor shower, 2 hoses, shaded double hammock, wide porch with rocking chairs & gas grill made the outside just as well-equipped as the inside. We consider ourselves lucky to have found this house

Edisto is charming and laid back little town with the beach, state park and the amazing Botany Bay beach so close by. Suggestion: Swing by the State Park and ask when and where the volunteers are doing a "Turtle Inventory"-- we got to see it twice. They dig out the turtle neat to count the hatched/unhatched eggs and release any of the turtles that need help getting to the ocean. We saw dozens released!!!

We kayaked in the bay and saw so many dolphin. Incredible!

Would definitely rent this again.

This really was a great house. The kitchen was great to cook in! Open and airy, and the downstairs always had a nice breeze, so it was great to sit down there and relax at the end of the day. There's a great back porch with a nice bench swing and picnic table. The downstairs shower was great for the kids. The house was stocked very nicely with pots, pans, and dishes.

I would recommend that if you want to swim and play in the water, to go ahead and pay for the state park. The water there isn't as rough, and there aren't any shells trying to beat you down while you swim. Bring some boogie boards to play in the water! Also, once you pay, you can leave and come back any time that day. I will say, the house is very close to the beach, with a 3 minute walk. We took a walk during the evening and looked out for the sea turtles, and the kids really liked that.

We went to the bingo that happens Tuesdays and Thursdays. Get there at least 30 minutes before it starts because it fills up really fast. Also wear bug spray...and maybe bring a chair for the wait. Also, don't expect much for concessions. The sell canned soda and candy. The money that you pay to play, for concessions, and for shirts, etc. goes back into the community because it is done by the Lions Club.

We ate at the pavilion. The food and service was great. Go before the sun sets because once it gets dark, you can't see anything out the windows.

One more suggestion! Stop at the Piggly Wiggly in Hollywood for your grocery shopping before getting on the island. Or you can stop in town before heading out that way. The prices are better, and there's a much better selection of foods and anything else you can think of. There's also a Family Dollar if you need beach toys, or anything else like that, in the same shopping center. We did it, and it saved us money.

The only negative that I really could say, was that we had to reset the thermostat at one point. This is more for the home owner than anything. After we reset it, it worked really well.
