About the property

Unique Cabin amongst the Redwoods:3 BR.3 BA. Utmost Tranquillity!

This cabin, built in 1906, the second built in the Mount Hermon Christian Conference community, is nestled amongst majestic giant Redwoods hundreds of years old, with lovely Zayante Creek running just below the cabin. Often, kids are down playing in the creek before the car is even unloaded ! Five minute walk to the Mt. Hermon Auditorium.

Enjoy the crisp, clean air and blue sky. Guests often come to this getaway to write, catch up on some reading in front of the wood burning stove, or just experience a time of reflection. Great nature trails through the redwoods located in the Mount Hermon Conference Center grounds…are literally outside your front door. This place is a photographer’s dream location.

Those wanting a little more excitement might want to try the Mount Hermon Canopy Tour, a two hour tour of the Redwoods which includes six Zip Lines and two Sky Bridges ! Call for reservations (1.831.430.4357) or book online:

Apparently, this is one of few such facilities in the United States.

Other visitors are drawn to the many opportunities available nearby: World Class golf courses such as Pasatiempo (10 minutes away) designed by Alister Mackenzie who designed Augusta National, site of the Masters or Pebble Beach and Spyglass less than an hour away in Carmel; the Monterey Bay Aquarium; fabulous beaches in Capitola and Santa Cruz (15 minutes); Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk, an oceanfront amusement park; best shopping in the Bay area at Stanford Mall plus Stevens Creek and Santana Row in San Jose (45 minutes);many antique stores in Capitola, Aptos, Felton, and Los Gatos; wonderful restaurants throughout the area. Plus guests can enjoy all of the excitement of San Francisco, just 90 minutes away!

An absolutely 'don't miss' experience is walking the 3 mile oceanside along the Santa Cruz Beach. To better envision this experience, we suggest you google 'Santa Cruz beach walkway '.

You will find this rustic cabin to be in excellent condition and beautifully furnished. The first floor has a small kitchen with a table and chairs overlooking the wooded forest; an inviting living room with two couches and other seating facing the wood burning stove; one bedroom with a brass queen bed (regular) with French Doors opening to the living room and the wood burning stove; another queen bed (comfy 12' mattress) with a TV set with many popular channels. A huge outside deck with a Redwood Table with seating for 8 to 10, depending...and another Redwood table seating 6 in the side deck (Just in case you want to allow the children to sit together, within ear shot, but not seated next to you.) The lower level includes a king bed (12' mattress) and an ante room with several sleeping pads plus an up and down bunk bed for children or smaller size adults. Each bedroom has its own tiny bathroom with shower. These showers are definitely one person showers! The cabin is full of antique furniture and plenty of books.

Decks completely surround the cabin as well as outside the bedroom with the king sized bed on the lower level. All with spectacular views.

Dining on the deck is an option: propane grill accommodates 12 steaks or burgers; Redwood table seats 8-10 comfortably.

We welcome you to a wonderful experience in this very special place on God's earth.

Special Note: This is a residential neighborhood located adjacent to the Mount Hermon Christian Conference Center grounds and 'partying' is unwelcome here.

Also, for those who need to stay 'connected', WI FI is in the Cabin. And, for those interested in late night TV, we have a 32' Flat Screen TV with many stations, as well as a small screen DVD player to be found in the downstairs bedroom closet. We do suggest you bring your iPad if you want to view movies on Netflix.

Sorry, absolutely no pets or smoking indoors or outdoors. Smoking on the nearby driveway is acceptable. Thanks for your consideration.

For those visiting the cabin without a vehicle: within a short walk you will find a sushi restaurant, Mexican restaurant, pizza, organic market with a nice deli, a supermarket, drug store, and a coffee and donut spot. Within one mlle of the cabin.

Wishing you an enjoyable experience in a very special place.

P.S. The lower level has an outside entrance. The stairway to the lower level is partially covered by the deck above.

SPECIAL NOTE: From time to time Mount Hermon has weekend getaway camps for children at Redwood Camp. While it is across the canyon and probably a block away, you can expect to hear singing and announcements over the loudspeaker from time to time.

Ask owner to provide an additional list of suggested Restaurants.

Gorgeous house in the middle of a redwood forest

  • 5 of 5

Shelley, caretaker, and owner, Don, keep the house beautifully maintained. Great internet service, comfortable beds, and a great location. Parking is a little challenging (at night) but one can get used to it. Easily accommodates 3-4 vehicles. Wonderful deck completely surrounds the house. Kitchen is well-appointed with cooking tools and serving plates, cups, etc. Skylights in the living room enhance the experience of living in a "tree house." Full-size refrigerator and freezer. Bathroom spaces are a bit cramped, but just part of the charm. Being summer, we didn't need the wood stove -- but the HVAC/furnace worked really well on the early morning chilled air.

I give this house 5 stars and hope to one day return.

Owner's Response: We are happy this was a good experience for you. That's what we love to hear. For future guests, just a word of clarification: You can get three or four cars in our designated parking space and the driveway. But it really requires some juggling. I would say three cars works. There is an overflow parking area a block away. Don

Cabin in the woods

  • 5 of 5

We loved the rustic setting. Accommodations were perfect for our large family. Cabin had loads of amenities (i.e.: dishes, towels, bedding, extra toilet paper - very important!) Owner and manager very accommodating.

picture deceiving

  • 3 of 5

Unfortunately the picture is very deceiving. It appears to be alone but is actually jammed in with many other rentals on a Christian Conference Center. The room was full of Christian books. Had we known we could have made our own decision but felt we were deceived. The cabin was great and the housekeeper did a fabulous job. We would not come back there.

Owner's Response: Hello, Gayle. I was disappointed to read of your unhappiness with some aspects of your stay at our cabin. So we really appreciate the favorable comments you have made, especially in view of your concerns. Please allow me to share my thoughts on this, this being the one and only negative review in over 10 years, and hundreds of guests. About the last thing I would ever consider myself to be would be that of a deceiver. I try to be as specific as possible in the description of the cabin, even to the point of disclosing the tiny bathroom showers. We try to be completely transparent. As to your specific concerns: Christian Books: Yes, we do have many books with Christian emphasis. The cabin is adjacent to a Christian Conference Center. We have guests from all over the world during the Conference season: Pastors, missionaries, and just everyday church attenders. However, we have many guests who are just staying at our cabin because of the setting: Writers, photographers, people just wanting to get away. For these guests we have over 150 non religious books, including the 55 volume Great Books of the Western World, adventure novels and the like. We make no secret that we are part of the Mount Hermon Christian Conference grounds. There are four specific references, two in the first paragraph. Photograph is deceiving: This complaint is a bit more difficult for me to grasp. We clearly state this is a “residential neighborhood” to discourage guests who intend to play loud music. The photo image is to convey the nature of the accommodations: a small cabin in the woods. We do not represent it as an isolated mountain cabin. And, it isn’t located amongst a bunch of other rentals. The duplex next door is the only rental, but occupied by full time residents. The fact is, standing on the creek side deck, you have a 180 degree unobstructed view of the forest and creek. Gayle, my hope is you will find these comments helpful. My guess is you did not have the time to read the entire description of the property in the VRBO listing. So, even though we clearly disclosed the cabin is located in a Christian Conference Center neighborhood, it did not catch your notice. Cordially, Don

The perfect mountain getaway

  • 5 of 5

This was just what I was looking for a quiet mountain retreat. While the cabin is rustic it is very comfortable and the decor is spot on perfect! While you will never want to leave the deck there are all kinds of great activities minutes away! We hope to make it back soon!

Owner's Response: We are happy it worked out for you. I agree, it is tempting to just sit around on the deck amongst the Redwoods and enjoy the sound of the brook down the hill.

Why The Owner chose Mount Hermon

We wanted a complete getaway from the hectic life of Southern California. We could have purchased a vacation home any place in the world. We chose this because we wanted the privacy, beauty, and serenity it offers. And, because we are avid golfers, we appreciate the fabulous golf courses in the area. And, it is always a thrill to do the three mile walk along the Santa Cruz coastline.

What makes this cabin unique

We just like being there. Hanging out on the deck or in front of the wood burning stove with a good book or close friends.

The reason we have a no refund policy is because unlike a hotel which has many rooms, we have only one cabin. And, because families generally plan vacations quite a distance in the future, we may be unable to find a replacement for your reservation. However, it you absolutely cannot make it and you do not have a friend or relative who can take your place, you should call me right away and we will release the date and attempt to rent it to someone else. If successful, we will notify VRBO and they will refund the rent plus all fees. The key here is to notify me ASAP if you can't make it. Don
