About this property

Central Coast Getaway, Meadow, Wildlife, Hot-Tub, Pet-Friendly, and Great Roads,

Above the fog line yet an easy drive to beach, town, and all major highways this one-level house (Vacation Rental Permit # 11159 expires 12/31/2026 overlooks a gorgeous private meadow surrounded by forest with distant views of the coastal mountains. A monumental 350-year-old coastal oak tree (10,000 sq ft canopy) shades an enormous deck that transitions to multiple gardens on 2 1/2 acres.

The open floor plan surrounds the chef's kitchen. Spending time in the hot tub, the meadow room with char-pit or outdoor garden shower are guest favorites.
House:
-The master's suite contains a large four-poster bed, a free-standing gas fireplace, and a low-curb walk-in stone tile shower.
-The guest room has a comfortable pillow-top queen bed and a little extra storage.
-The third bedroom is quite small containing a bunk bed plus the pullout trundle (all three are single beds). Our smallest fans will find a toy box under the desk in the closet.
-You will find a hide-a-sofa in the living room. Your teen might enjoy the vinyl collection and turntable and incredibly fast internet connection.

Detached Office:
-The executive office contains a large work table, printer and comfortable sitting area can be available with advanced arrangement for a fee. Larger satellite conference rooms are just two miles down the hill.

Yard:
-The hidden kitchen garden is protected by tall deer fence, planted with fresh vegetables of the season, herbs, and fruit. Please help us by keeping the gate closed and the deer out.
-The meditation area, with Buddha house and fountain, is a great place to read or enjoy a private conversation.
-The meadow room, built from the tops of redwood trees and a floor of Santa Fe slate is surrounded by beautifully maintained landscaping. There is a fully screened fire pit with this roasting rack to melt dessert or grill the late-night bite.
-Hot tub and Garden Shower are romantic and a fun way to end the day.

Area:
We are situated 10 Miles to downtown Santa Cruz and the Municipal Wharf and Beaches but only steps to the amazing world only found in the Santa Cruz Mountains:

-Zyante Sandhills Conservation Habitat
-Historic Quail Hollow Ranch Park
-Henry Cowell Redwood State Park
Within the San Lorenzo Valley you will discover:
-Local breweries,
-Roaring Camp Railroad (19th century steam train),
-Hidden swimming holes, private pool clubs,
-Art festivals
-Music venues like the Felton Music Hall
- Big Basin Redwood State Park re-emerging post CZU fires
-Boating in the Loch Lomond Reservoir
-Zip line in the Redwood canopy.

Upland vistas are a short walk from the house where as, world class destinations like San Fransisco, Carmel, Monterey, Cupertino and Oakland are all easy day trips. Tucked up against the Zyante Sand Hills Habitat and the Quail Hollow Ranch Equestrian Park wildlife on parade is the norm. Swimming holes are near, as is the fabulous salt-water pool and club house at the Trout Farm Inn. Some of the best music venues found in the central coast are hidden gems on the mountains.

Detached office and garage with electric car port might be available with advance arrangement.
Our prices include all fees. No hidden fees.

Stunning Property and warm inviting home. The beds were comfortable and soft. The house had every amenity that you could need. We were only there for a short stay so we didn't have a chance to use the hot tub nor deck but it was stunning. QUIET. Peaceful. The shower in the hall bathroom was odd as a bathtub with a shower attachment one meter high above the bottom of the tub. It was European. This would be ideal for small children! It wasn't a big deal; we all used the bigger shower in the Master bedroom instead. The house was VERY nice. The owners were very responsive. We would stay here again.

Thank you so much for penning a thoughtful and informative review. You noticed one of the challenges to create a space of 1,000 sq as comfortable for a peaceful escape for two as well as a base for larger groups to relax after a busy day exploring all the cost and mountains have to offer and still keep the attributes of the home I hope to return to one day soon. I love our long 70 year old tub but dislike shower enclosures. Understanding not every one likes to take baths we borrowed a shower idea from Robert’s research in SriLanka and build a garden shower with a black pebble and IPE floor and rosemary hedge wall. The hand held shower wands are found in both the outside shower as well as the hall bathroom tub. Bubble Bath is found in the cabinet.

Thank you so much for taking the time to review the property. As the owner of this special property we enjoy sharing it with folks who love or want to get to k is the Santa Cruz Mountains. We understand that we are not comparable with hotel rooms or invested flip homes. Still to compete management companies and beach properties for placement in web search engines we depend on folks like you who discover us, and want to share their enjoyment and fun. The kitchen was very well equipped. We celebrated the holiday and had everything we needed to prepare our meals. The rooms were nice. Dining area a little small. If the bathroom with a bathtub could be used as a shower that would be helpful. All in all a very nice stay

Nancy, thank you for taking the time to review the Ben Lomond Bungalow. We are so appreciative of you selecting our property for your special time and helping to set expectations for future guests. We completely agree with you, the dinning room is indeed small as the limited space provided by a 1,000 sq ft home is dedicated to other rooms such as the kitchen. This is why we’ve worked to create wonderful places to eat outside on the deck on in the meadow room during times of good weather. For special dinners sometimes the library bin the old boat barn makes a beautiful much larger dinning space with advance notice.

First of all, I wanna think the owner, Lolly!!! She is so kind, courteous, professional, and extremely knowledgeable about the area. She had given us extra tips to explore the local area. The hikes were easy for kids and extremely beautiful. We had such a great vacation. We did not wanna leave. There is so much nature to appreciate and this is the most beautiful property! They had all the amenities for all your cooking needs and everything was just comfortable!! We will definitely plan another trip for the future, it was so breathtaking and the hot tub at the end of a long day was just what we all needed!! I highly recommend this property. Thanks again Lolly, Tina.

Tina, your enthusiasm for the area and your son makes my job easy, we were delighted to host you both and look forward to your return and to your discovery of what is new. One of the best things about the central coast is the magic year round from the winter storms to the bright green grasses in the spring, summer adventures and crisp clear fall skies.

The house is comfortable and interesting. The hosts have lots of suggestions for things to do in the area and farther afield. The garden is amazing with at least two incredible heritage oak trees and many beautiful spaces to sit and enjoy the outdoors. Everyone loved the swing. The friendly neighborhood dogs welcomed us but were not seen again until we were leaving.

Great location! Short drive to Brookdale and Waterfall venues, and several moderate hiking trails are within walking distance. Home is well off the main road, so its a very quiet neighborhood. Huge shaded deck with ample seating provided a great location for evening meals and relaxation. Wall unit AC keeps the kitchen and living room areas comfy when it gets hot out. Bedrooms can get toasty, but open windows and fans will cool them down during sleeping hours. Kitchen is well supplied with regard to tableware, pots/pans, utensils, and incidentals (spices, sweeteners, vinegar, oils, etc). Bunk beds and sofa sleeper are probably better suited to the younger set, but our party was eight adults, and it still worked for us. Robert was both proactive and responsive with all communications, from check-in thru check-out.

Jessica that you for taking the time to review. Fall is coming and it is probably the prettiest time in the Santa Cruz mountains and beach. Beautiful home with an incredible yard

This property was absolutely lovely. The check-in and check-out instructions are very thorough, and the hosts are extremely communicative -- to the point that they called a few minutes after I booked to double-check that I was aware I was putting 7 people in a 1000 sq. ft. house, and then we chatted for half an hour while Lolly told me about the neighborhood and gave me suggestions for things to do. There were a few oddities around the house, but all within the normal and acceptable realm of rental properties. The only thing that was not clear from the listing was that you need to remove the chair from the small bedroom with the bunk bed before pulling out the trundle mattress -- the room technically has 3 beds, but having the third out eats up the entire empty floor area. That said, we had 4 adults and 3 kids in the house and were completely comfortable.

Joyce, we love hearing about our guests having a wonderful time. OurBasset Hound and Aussie also like to hold court on the deck. It is really the only time they are not velcro dogs. I think there are so many things in the meadow to watch that it is that much more interesting than napping under my desk. I am always amazed at the brilliant green grass that waves in the meadow during the spring.

Beautiful Property, Comfortable House

The property and setting was beautiful and comfortable. We wished we could have stayed longer to enjoy all the wonderful amenities. We were there for our daughter’s wedding, which took up all of our time there. Although there were a few quirks to this mountain property (fuses needing to be reset if too many outlets in use, for example) it’s definitely worth the stay for those who want a true getaway. The hosts were accessible and accommodating. The rooms are smaller, but comfortable. Note for those with large parties, the extra bed in the bunk room is a trundle that takes up the minimal floor space, and the listed 1/2 bath is an outdoor shower. All in all, I recommend this property for a lovely, relaxing getaway.

About the host

Hosted by Lolly and Lindley

Host profile image
Architecture, Anthropology, the Sea, and History; we love to travel. Our family enjoyed the central coast region for more than a century. Professor Emeritus Lindley is collecting faux columns to erect a folly in the woods. Lolly laid down her trowel and scuba tanks due to a change in health but is never bored. We met working on an underwater excavation in the Mediterranean and spent three decades exploring the world together. Please feel free to explore our library at the house.

Why they chose this property

Many of our neighbors have shared this short private road for more that 40 years. The Oak Tree is AMAZING, as are the hundreds birds daily who come to rest and feed on acorns. We chose this property partly because of the open flat sunny meadow surrounded by forests with distant mountain views and partly because the geology is as varied in each direction as the potential activities nearby.

Ben Lomond is a place that defines California Central Coast living at its best. The line between indoor and outdoor living spaces dissolve. Now you have the chance to enjoy our hard working great neighbors, trails, and access to everything on the central coast including the zip line at Mt Herman as you move from platform to platform through the treetop canopy.

If you are looking for crowds, noise, fog, and traffic -- you will not find it here. We are tranquility, blue skies, white fluffy clouds, bird song, deer, wild turkeys and brilliant starlight. Once in the house you may not want to leave but the redwood forests, beaches, and cities of San Francisco, Monterey, Carmel, San Jose, Palo Alto and Sunnyvale are all with in reach.

On the mountain, two miles from our country retreat is a venue for quality music at the Felton Music Hall, or Henfling's, both serving casual fare. For a little more local color you might want to check out the Old Log Cabin Bar (sometimes there is a friendly Macaw or a 3 legged dog). Legendary are the ghosts that haunt the main dining room of the Brookdale Lodge, a place I visited for the first time with my grand-mother in 1965. There is a brook running through the terraced dining room (currently being remodeled).

Fishing license and small craft rentals are available at Loch Lomond or the Santa Cruz Wharf as well as other places around the county we can help you find.

What makes this property unique

Possibly the oldest Oak Tree on the coast. Arborist estimated 350 years, with a 10,000 canopy is a home to an assortment of animals. The outdoor meadow room, the fruit trees, grape vines, herbal garden, and a meditation zone are all created for you to have the best possible mountain experience. Enjoy your barbecue on the deck or patio under the shelter of the pergola and stars.

Behind the property you will find Quail Hollow Ranch, an equestrian park first developed by the founders of Sunset Magazine as their weekend home. The trails around the ranch lead you past a pond, year round streams and a host of wildlife. The sunset trail above our home leads to a panorama vista overlooking the coast and nearby valleys.

The rich and varied history of the region is recognized as one of the most significant biological treasures in the state of California, the Zyante Sandhills Zone support a unique community of plants and animals found only in Santa Cruz County.

We are close to many state parks and the redwood trees beaches and fun and creative shopping areas. We look forward to sharing our list of fun places to play and eat; however, if you are not able to escape leave work, satellite conference rooms and office space is available within two miles. Our home office (the old Goat Barn) can be made available with advanced reservation at an additional fee.
