Guestbook comments from the owner

We had a guest post a 3-star review. He then removed it, but not until after I had written a response. Since I feel this should be said anyway, below is the response I had written. All of our guests should read this.

Let me clarify a few things:

TRASH REMOVAL: He's correct on this one. This is a vacation rental, not the Town Dump. The Stowe Transfer Station is open every day except Tuesday. It is your responsibility to sort and dispose of your own trash, recycling and food waste.

LAUNDRY: Wrong. We do NOT want clients doing the laundry. We'd much rather have our housekeeper do it, as it needs to be done thoroughly.

HOT WATER: Wrong. The hot water works fine. In fact, we have two water heaters (one primary, one backup for emergencies). This guest arrived 2-3 hours before check-in time... before the well pump had time to re-fill its cistern, which we had drained to fill the hot tub with fresh water. Mr. Nicholson, upon finding low water pressure before 5pm, started throwing valves near the water heater ("I'm a man... I can fix this") before contacting us. By the time he called us, he had reduced the flow of water to the hot water heater so that it didn't work properly for the rest of his stay. When we went in to clean the house after he left, we discovered that there was no hot water and that the valves and switches that control the water heaters were in the wrong position. We switched them back and everything works as it should.

CLEANLINESS: As I mentioned, Mr. Nicholson arrived 2-3 hours early. We have an experienced housekeeper who, when given the amount of time needed, can clean the house well. When you show up at 2pm for a 5pm check in, that's not going to happen. Contrary to what Mr. Nicholson said, we do NOT expect guests to clean the house (or do the laundry).

The Take-Away for Guests:

1) If something doesn't work, contact us BEFORE you mess with it. There's usually an easy fix.

2) Due to this review we will no longer honor requests for early check-in. No exceptions. If you arrive in Stowe early, tour the Ben and Jerry's factory, get some donuts at Cold Hollow Cider Mill or hit one of our local micro-breweries for some liquid sunshine. Just don't arrive 2-3 hours early and expect things to be clean and ready.

Good point on the bathroom towel hooks. We'll install some.

Great place to rent and enjoy the winter

Everything was good, clean, and ready to play. The only problem was that the contact person was hard to get ahold of.

Owner's Response: Hello! Thanks for your input. I'm sorry you found it difficult to contact me. I did get back to you immediately, though the cell call dropped twice, as I was on the road in a rural area with little cell service, so I texted. You reached out to locate the house. We recommend that guests keep the detailed directions we email out when you book and use those to locate the house. Thanks!

I really enjoyed my stay at the cabin. Even if it was a little bit cold, the fireplace kept us warm and cozy. Really helpful and friendly owner, will definitely put that cabin in my list for other years. I love Vermont!

Perfect home for two couples and all our dogs

  • 5 of 5

Even tho we had issues with hot water and the hot tub John was very responsive and repaired them as quickly as he could. Comfy beds, a well equipped kitchen, and convenient location made this a wonderful rental. Will certainly come back here again!

Well kept home with comfortable amenities

  • 5 of 5

We had a group of seven stay at the cabin. We cooked meals in the kitchen and enjoyed the hot tub. Great outdoor space and we lit a fire in the fireplace both nights! Very convenient to Stowe Village. Very happy we chase this place and will come back for the next ski trip!

Quintessential First VT Stay

  • 5 of 5

Our stay at the cabin perfectly fit our imagined Vermont vacation. The house is near-enough to Main Street in Stowe and Smugglers' Notch Park, but also tucked away among expansive private residences.

Communicating with Newt and John was easy, from start to finish. We had a minor issue at the house, and they sent someone to address within two hours.

Space was clean, instructions were clear, and the hot tub was great for viewing fall foliage!
