This was our second stay in two years at the Shagbark Cabin, and it did not disappoint. We were seeking a quiet, secluded spot for a fall break to read, write, and relax. This cabin provided just that. With trails right on the property, my dog and I got our morning and evening stroll in with no travel time required. Allison, the host, was very communicative and responsive to questions. The check-in and check-out were simple and seamless. Being equally close to Carbondale for any needs and the Shawnee National Forest with abundant parks and trails, this location is ideal. I definitely recommend this place to anyone who can appreciate and help take care of the cabin and the surrounding nature. Be a good guest!

Great place for a peaceful getaway!

Wonderful location. Easy access but felt remote. Cabin was new and had a wonderful rustic feel. Trail system on the property was a nice surprise. Will definitely be back!

What a perfect stay!! Very clean, secluded but close to many activities; wineries, restaurants, hiking trails. Nice fire pit, hot tub, kitchen supplies, comfy bed! Not one single complaint.

The cabin had everything we needed! It was cozy and clean. I loved all the Illinois-themed decor and little touches. We did not have our kids with us but we would love to come back in the summer and bring our kiddos! The loft area was cute and I know they would love the hot tub and fire pit area.

Perfect Getaway

The Shagbark cabin was a wonderful place to stay. Easy check-in. Very clean and comfortable. Close the many outdoor adventures in the Shawnee Forest, as well as Carbondale, if needed. Helpful instructions from the host. Highly recommended.

We stayed a week in the Shagbark Cabin April 18-25, 2026 and the VRBO listing descriptions and photos do not do the property justice. This lodging exceeded our expectations. The cabin is situated on 30-40 acres of older growth forest, similar to the Shawnee National Forest area. There are well marked hiking trails right there on the property. The cabin was equipped with everything you would need and more, including a washer/dryer ensemble. Everything was spotless clean and the beds are super comfy. We daily saw deer and their nursing fawns, pileated woodpeckers and a red martin. We highly recommend this property and have already booked a return week in October, 2026.

Relax in the woods

We absolutely loved everything about this cabin. It was beautiful and peaceful inside and out. Perfect spot to get away and take a break from the busyness of life. Would definitely recommend.

Birthday celebration

we had a great time celebrating our sons birthday. the cabin was beautiful and just perfect for us to use as home base to explore the area. the fire pit and hot tub were a great hit.

Peacefulness

Needed a relaxing getaway, this cabin was perfect. Close enough to food and a few shops but far enough from city chaos. Cabin was very clean. HotTub was amazing. We have stayed at one of the other cabins in this group but this one was our fave.
