About Roxanne Locher

Aloha Ocean Hideaway: A family run vacation rental business:

The original owner, my mother, Kara, was a published author and artist whose last publication, 'ISLAND WOMAN' is available online and in major bookstores. She was a forty year resident of Hawaii and owned and operated an organic coffee farm in Capt. Cook which is still in the family today. Since my mother’s passing my daughter, Kristen, and myself have been co-managing Aloha Ocean Hideaway. It remains our family passion to continue to share our little cottage by the sea with visitors of Hawaii.

Thank you,

Roxanne Locher (Owner)

Why Roxanne Locher chose Captain Cook

We purchased our lot and custom built this oceanfront cottage as our second home. We picked the location for its pristine ocean, privacy and clean environment. It is the perfect spot to write, paint, swim and relax by the sea.

What makes this house unique

Close proximity to the ocean, snorkeling and swimming. Incredibly clear water and abundance of tropical fish. Sounds of the ocean and gentle breeze. Quiet, private and a great relaxing getaway! Ideal for an artist or writer's retreat. A diver's dream come true.

Stunning location, charming accommodations

  • 5 of 5

To sum our experience at this property -- we've already decided when we'll be back.

This home, which is well maintained and clean, had everything we needed. The kitchen was well equipped, the beds were comfortable, the deck is expansive, there's Wifi and TV, etc. But the view. The view and proximity to the ocean are what attracted us and we were not disappointed.

The location, however, is not for everyone. Walking out to the ocean requires passing over uneven, hardened lava. There's not much in the way of a sandy beach, the water can be rough in the winter. Getting to the grocery store takes about 30 minutes.

But if you are looking for an ocean view, the sounds of the ocean and solitude, this is the place.

Footnote: Other reviews mentioned that the deck was unusable due to bugs. We did not experience that. In fact, we saw few bugs. Probably less than if we were in our own home.

Beyond Expectations!

  • 5 of 5

This home was more than we hoped for! It has an awesome feel to it. The reed ceiling is very impressive and the sliding glass window wall to the ocean is something to see!! The ocean front view is spectacular! There is also easy access to the water. We had a wonderful experience and highly recommend this beautiful vacation home.

Love this Vacation Home!

  • 5 of 5

We absolutely loved this vacation home! There were no surprises! The description was very accurate! The home itself maintains a welcoming and warm atmosphere. It was impeccably clean, fully stocked with all that we needed, from towels to condiments. Communication with Roxanne was excellent. Roxanne even checked in with us to make sure we were comfortable and had everything that we need. This is the place to truly get away from it all and enjoy the beautiful ocean right outside our door! One of the highlights was that the only way to safely enter the bay was just steps away! The home retains its own personal character and is not your “cookie cutter” type of home. The shower area and one sleeping area have lava rock built in as part of the walls, giving the feeling of being out in nature. The reed covering on the ceilings strongly suggest a tropical lifestyle. The beautiful wood doors spanning the length of the ocean front wall brings the sounds and smells of the ocean in! If you are looking to get away from the tourist traps and hustle, this really is the place to be!

A Gorgeous True Get-a-Way

  • 5 of 5

This place feels on the edge of the world. Located quite a way south of Kona and down a long winding road through a lava field to the ocean. It's a stark, wild environment where time is shaped by the tidal clock. The condo is very tropical - a little rustic - but very comfortable and well appointed. There is another rental right next door, but the rest of the area is homes scattered across the lava and lots of open space, so about all you hear is the wonderful waves. I don't recommend snorkeling off of the property or public access next door unless you are very fit with good arm strength because the steps are steep and rough - I almost couldn't get out and was pretty banged up from the lava. Instead we drove to 2-Step by the Place of Refuge where the snorkeling was outstanding - twice the spinner dolphins came in and played among the swimmers. Magical! An outstanding time!

Beautiful oceanfront view

  • 4 of 5

We so enjoyed our time here. Positives: Even though it rained the first day or so, after it stopped raining, the water was gorgeous. The deck is large and very peaceful. My husband enjoyed the snorkeling right in front of the cottage. The views of the ocean and mountains are incredible. Roxanne is great to work with and very prompt to respond. Negatives: The long, winding road to get to the place is a chore, so just prepare yourself for that, especially after dark. No lights anywhere and very curvy. It's also quite a long trek into Kona (at least an hour). We actually had booked 3 nights and chose to forfeit the 3rd night because of the distance and driving there after dark from Kona. However, if you're looking for a place to just come and do nothing but stay put and relax and enjoy beautiful scenery, then this cottage is perfection. Just be sure to stock up on groceries before leaving Kona or another area that has a store before checking in. Also, REALLY needs new living room furniture. The rattan loveseat leaves a lot to be desired.

Overall though, you won't find a more beautiful oceanfront view for the price. Thanks Roxanne for working with us and providing a once in a lifetime experience.

Owner's Response: Aloha and thank you for your review. We are happy you enjoyed your stay but apologize for the inconsistent internet service. At times, during winter storms our island can get temporarily affected. We appreciate your feedback and hope to see you back in Hawaii again someday soon.
