Overview

About the property

Home 2 bedrooms / 2 bathrooms also Studio Apartment, c/w 1 bedroom/1 bathroom

The first thing people usually say after arriving at the Posada Colonial is that 'The pictures don't do it justice'. We are confident from our reviews that you, your family and your friends will feel the same way. And guests who book with us have exclusive use of the home and property. It is not shared with others, so absolute privacy is assured.

We are central, yet secluded, with patios, balconies and grounds looking on to the world famous Arenal Volcano. This Almendro home has a wrap-around balcony, is gated and very private. We have WI-fi, cable and Sky TV, indoor and outdoor dining with flowers, birds and butterflies everywhere. It is a natural paradise.

We are near the charming town of La Fortuna, and our area is famous for its diversity of interests. These include bird watching, river rafting, jungle cruises, jungle canopy tours, butterfly farms, horseback riding, world famous spas and hot springs or relaxing and enjoying the best views of the spectacular Arenal Volcano. And because we are well located on the main road, all is within easy access. We encourage everyone who is planning on visiting to read the reviews of our home to help determine your decision for your visit to this lovely part of the world.

We have been a Bed and Breakfast for about 15 years, with excellent reviews in the guide books, Our housekeeper/cook Miriam is local, friendly, helpful and has developed a great reputation for her breakfasts, which you can read about in the reviews. She is the soul of the place.

Security: Although the property is on the main road, with easy access to all the local attractions, it is gated, fenced, on a partial rise, and thus very safe and private. The newly formed 'tourist police' make regular checks with all the property owners.

About Grant Carlson

I'm a Canadian who came here in 1993 for a combination of adventure and investment. I built a home in La Palma overlooking Arenal Volcano, and because of the shortage of places for people to stay gradually became involved in tourism. It has been a wonderful experience meeting people from all over the world. When it comes to the wonders of nature, everyone reacts in a similar way. Awe, respect, wonder and delight.

Grant Carlson purchased this house in 1995

Why Grant Carlson chose San Carlos

When I decided on Costa Rica as a place to live in and invest I knew very little about the country, apart from its positive reputation. It was only later that I realized I needed a 'where' in Costa Rica. After driving around the country for a week or so I arrived in La Fortuna and immediately knew that this was where I wanted to be. It was something I still can't explain. I built the home, which eventually evolved into a B and B, about two years after arriving. I drove a fifth wheel down here from Vancouver and lived in that until my home was complete.

What makes this house unique

The Nicaraguan and Costa Rican people Ive become friends with over the years have enhanced my life immeasurably. As well. the climate, the greenery, fresh air, the birds and, of course, the volcano, all serve to make this area a very special place in the world.

Guestbook comments from the manager

Two friends and I recently visited Arenal and stayed at this wonderful home just outside of La Fortuna. We had a great time, mostly because of the wonderful hospitality of the owner and his staff. The home itself is beautiful with wonderful views of the volcano and rainforest. Grant went out of his way to help us plan our stay: he helped set up various excursions and provided great recommendations on things to do. Miriam cooked amazing breakfasts every morning, and we couldn't have asked for more. It made everything so easy. If I ever return to Arenal, I will certainly want to stay here again!

We have a housekeeper who will have everything prepared for your arrival. The house is situated on the Rio La Palma which is a short hike down to the bottom of the property. Across the small river, actually a large creek, is jungle. Monkeys visit regularly but at times known only to them. We have feeders so there are always plenty of birds around. Deer, wild boar, pesote, and other animals have also been sited. Of course there is an abundance of flowers as well. It s a very comfortable home which fits into the surrounding ambiance quite naturally. There are interesting views everywhere. It is private and enclosed yet near everything the area has to offer.

Amazing property. Favourite place in Costa Rica. Grant and Miriam deserve awards.

  • 5 of 5

It cannot be stressed enough how much the pictures do not compare to this beautiful spot. Truly a gem! Absoluely our favourite place...And the cherry on top was waking up for Miriam's breakfasts. We had a wonderful stay and look forward to a return on our next visit to Arenal.

Thank you so much Grant for going out of your way ! It is impossible to find such great hosts anywhere. I will be recommending this property to everyone I know!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Owner's Response: Thanks so much for that, Corey. So often people say the pictures don;t do it justice so perhaps we'll need a more professional photographer. And I must say too what a pleasure it was to meet you and your family. Please give them our regards. All the very best, and continued good fortune, Grant

Wonderful wonderful place to stay at La Fortuna

  • 5 of 5

Our family of six had stayed at Grant's place for three nights and I wished that we had stayed much longer! There are so many good things to say about the house but to be more specific --- its location, its spacious rooms, Miriam the house keeper, its beautiful views and I can go on and on....

Grant had been really really helpful from the beginning of the process when we were just looking till the end. He had been very patient to all my questions and gone above and beyond to help out. Miriam, oh how all my kids liked her! She had been great to assist us in almost everything.

Our family had already talked about going back there in the future.

Owner's Response: Thank you so very much, Kelly, and I'll be passing this along to Miriam. Both of us really enjoy what we're doing and the feedback we get from guests like yourselves, which is always very positive, gives us both a great deal of satisfaction. It's what makes life pleasurable. We wish you and all your family continued Health and Prosperity in a very Happy New Year. All the best, Grant and Miriam

Glorious!

  • 5 of 5

We loved staying at La Posada Colonial! The view and the grounds are so beautiful. All the rooms are comfortable and well appointed.

Although there is no air conditioning, it cooled off nicely at night in November and there are fans for every room.

Grant is a very helpful host who responds right away with any questions you may have. This was our first trip to Costa Rica and he made me feel very comfortable with clear instructions and recommendations.

Miriam is a wonderful hostess. Her cooking is to die for! She made us an American breakfast the first morning and a typical Costa Rican breakfast the second morning. Both were SO good.

La Fortuna is a fun little town and the people are so nice. We only spent two nights here. I wish we had stayed longer!!

We had a great stay, and my wife and kids (we have five under the age of 12) and I loved the home and location. Everything was beautiful and better than advertised. Miriam was awesome, and we loved her breakfasts in the morning. Definitely deserves more than 5 stars!

Thanks, Grant!

Book without hesitation!

  • 5 of 5

I cannot recommend this property highly enough, and I am a very discriminating vacation renter. I look for: gorgeous scenery, convenient location, comfortable living quarters - and this house delivers. This was our first ever trip to Costa Rica with travelers ranging from 3 years old to 75 years old. Everyone had a ball at this home. We were so thankful that it was the FIRST place we stayed because the gracious hospitality of Grant and Miriam was so easy, friendly, and helpful that we were able to ease into the culture at a delightful pace. Full disclosure: we were there during the rainy season when the clouds did obstruct our view of the Volcano, but that honestly did not detract from our experience one bit! Seriously! Grandparents are avid birders and were so thrilled to simply enjoy the phenomenal birding from the porches and decks. Miriam's homemade breakfast was truly a luxury and an extremely strong value. We arranged for her to cook dinner for us (which we didn't plan on before arrival but immediately decided it would be a fantastic idea), provided that we take her to the market, which was a super fun experience to travel into town on our very first full day in Costa Rica with a local! There's a sweet little river on the property via some steep terrain was a welcome addition - we could get in and get wet and trek up the river to explore. All of that, combined with the cool air flowing through the beautiful home day and night, make this truly paradise. We hope to return!! The only caveats I can think of: if you cannot do ANY steps, this might not be a great choice because there are a few shallow long steps that you must be able to do to get to the main house - very easy, but not if you were in a wheelchair, of course. We had our own rental cars which worked beautifully; I can't attest to the experience if you're relying solely on public transportation / taxis.

Excellent!

  • 5 of 5

We are so very happy we booked here, it was prefect for our family. They only book one group at a time so we had the entire property to ourselves with lots of room for everyone and a wonder breakfast served by Miriam each morning. We could be together or also each have a private space when wanted. We would certainly stay here again if we ever have the chance.

The area has many famous natural springs heated underground by the Volcano, and is also famous for its birds and other wild life, and its easy access to rain forests, Lake Arenal is the largest lake in Costa Rica and just a few minutes away by car.and is known for world famous rafting and wind surfing Of course there are canopy tours, horse rentals to the famous La Fortuna waterfall (and other areas as well). It's very easy to fill in an entire week enjoying all the natural activities in the area without doing the same thing twice. The property is not all that difficult to find and I always remind people to ask the locals. It actually is an opportunity to talk to these very friendly people.

I'm not certain which direction you'll be coming fom so will give you both. It's about a three hour drive from San Jose through some very pretty country. The roads are good but two lanes for much of the way, so take your time and leave earlyish.

After you leave the airport you'll see a sign saying Nicaragua and the North and the main Pan American highway. You'll travel northerly for perhaps an hour until you see San Ramon where you'll turn off and you can only turn right. Keep going in much the same general direction until you get to the outskirts of town and then watch for signs saying La Fortuna, or symbols of the Volcano, In case of any concern at all please just ask directions to La Fortuna. Everyone knows it and they enjoy helping guests to their country. Just point and ask "La Fortuna?".

Once you arrive in La Fortuna you'll see an Alamo rental car outlet on the Volcano side of the town, a couple of blocks west of the Church. This is the main road which will take you to our place.

About a mile out of town you'll see a supermarket which might be a good place to stock up on things you may need. Then continue your journey in the same direction passing Las Lagos, Baldi and then, a little later, a small bridge with a large sign on the right saying Volcano Lodge. Just a little bit more and there is a long natural rock fence and our property is at the end of that fence so slow down and prepare to turn. A sharp left will take you under the archway and then you park wherever you want. Someone will be there to greet you very soon. The large home you see in front of you is yours. If we don't see you right away just make yourselves at home because we'll be around somewhere. Our coordinates are

10.5019° N, 84.6914° W

If you're coming from Liberia turn right at the main Pan American highway until you reach Canas and then go left along the main road there. There should be lots of signs and if you are at all unsure please don't hesitate to ask. There is a bit of a tricky turn once you're in Tilaran so be careful there. Otherwise just ask as the people are very friendly and enjoy getting involved.

Once you pass the town of Arenal you'll eventually come to a dam and we're about 10-15 minutes from there. You'll soon see Tabacon Resort and then, on your left, Montana del Fuego and Paraiso Resort. Then slow down because you'll see a sign saying Posada Colonial on the right, which is us. Park anywhere and we'll be watching for you. If we don't see you right away just make yourselves at home because we'll be around somewhere.

Our phone number here is 2479-1594.

Wishing you all a pleasant and safe journey.

Grant
