About Jon Baldur Torbjornsson
I'm in my sixties now. After having finished High School I joined the Icelandic cargo fleet. As able seaman I sailed for one and a half year, bringing frozen fish to the East Coast of the USA, and Kellogg's Corn Flakes and Cocoa Puffs back. With a firm land under my feet again I started in Auto mechanics at the vocational school here in Iceland and went thereafter to a College in Munich, Germany for Automotive Constructional Engineering for 5 years. Worked in my profession as technical Director at the Ministry of Transportation in Iceland for some years -but started to have more and more interest in Tourism, after having begun a summer job as a tourist guide with my knowledge in German, English and Swedish languages. Founded my tourist operation "Isafold Travel" 1997 and the unique 4x4 Rental "Isak" (only Land Rover Defenders) in 2007. Sold the whole business in 2015 to start up a new enterprise, Nordic Lodges, offering a few vacation rentals in various parts of Iceland, under the brand name (slogan?) "Roof 'n Route". At the time the great cottage Hamragil was built (1991 - 1993) I happened to be working at the same company as one of the owners. Since the Icelandic tourism became my fate shortly after Hamragil was built and I ended up as a tourism entrepreneur and tour guide, I got this property rented several times on my small group tours. It easily accommodated 10+ people, and offered a nice kitchen and great living room for convivial moments. So, when I got the opportunity to buy it in 2015, I did -and now it could become yours for a while!

Beautiful cabin in a wonderful location
This cabin was perfect for our group of 10. The kitchen was well stocked and the host even went so far as to leave us a bottle of champagne on arrival. The hot tub was extremely pleasant to use after long hours of hiking. There is a creek that runs right in front of the cabin and you can step out the door and do some hiking without ever getting in your car. This place is a 10.
Loved it! Everyone had their own room. Clean and well appointed. 2 full baths, all needed kitchen appliances, pots and pans, etc. We only had to buy groceries and saved a bundle cooking “at home”.
Happy to hear of your satisfaction reg our house Hamragil. Your review and your comments are very precious to us, since I know you're running rentals of your own. Thank you for your constructive messenges and for informing us about things that needed some closer care. Will be brought in order!
This place was amazing. So spacious and everything we needed was already there. Perfect vacation.
Jon has put the attention to detaiil in Hamragil. The kitchen had everything we needed to feed our group of 10. Lots of beds and places to sit and relax. The hotpot was a nice touch after a long day of travel and hiking. We will definately be back.
Thank you so much. Welcome back, anytime!!
Property was private , quiet, n great views!
This property was very comfortable, spacious, and close ( central) to lots of points of interest. All the amenities needed, n Jon was accessible if we needed to contact him. There were 6 if us and the accommodations were perfect, it felt like home but these views were very picturesque. The hot pot, very relaxing after a long day of photographing n sightseeing. Would definitely recommend this property to stay for any length of time.
Many thanks for taking time for such a great review. In fact, this is exactly what we the owners feel about Hamragil, and this house is very dear to us in the group of the Nordic Lodges. Constantly we're also improving the access to the lodge in the off season, like planting pine trees to shelter the house for the northern wind and snow, building up the trail from the main road to the house -and looking forward to the finish of the road tunnel through the mountain to the town Akureyri, which cuts off the tough road pass- even though we do not work on this in person:-).
Very nicely located, very nice spacious home
Spemd 3 nights with 5 adults here, ample space. Great place to stay and close to Akureyri and nature activities
Thank you for this review. Hamragil offers all what you need. space, view and tranquility.
Nice you've experienced it! Welcome any time again.
Really nice place to stay. Great views, very private, love the hot pot!
Two thumbs up!
Our lodge Hamragil is a really precious property. Therefore it was very enjoyable to communicate with Richard Pulliam in the preparation of the stay, giving the feeling of how caring and helpful he was in all concerns.
From the cottage Hamragil, in the rural area of valley Fnjoskadalur, you can easily hike to the historical arch bridge across the river Fnjoska, to the second biggest (birch)wood in the country.
The town Akureyri -also the the second biggest in Iceland- only 20 minutes away, has (almost) all services needed, plus activities, like golfing, sailing, diving, skiing, apart from cultural events. To the north-east you have the picturesque waterfall Godafoss, and the whale watching town Husavik only 45 minutes away. And the unique area around the lake Myvatn, covered with nature sights, is only 40 min to the east. NB!: in the wintertime the ring road can become closed for a while due to snow storms, and the 400 m long home run for Lodge Hamragil can become inaccessible because of snow, even for 4x4 vehicles. Contact the 4x4 rental isak.is for to rent a vehicle to get there during winter.
