Overview

About the property

Cabin with deck and 2 Bedrooms + Loft with double beds, 1 Bath, Sleeps 6+

This cabin is a haven from the high stress world. It’s private, surrounded by pine trees and rests only 50 feet away from beautiful Embden Pond. The Pond is pristine, spring fed and is 5 miles long. It is actually the size of a lake but it is called a pond in Maine. The sun rises earlier in Maine than anywhere else in America which gives you more hours to enjoy your stay on the Lake. The days are longer on the East side and you enjoy the beautiful sunsets. The cabin is our vacation home which we have decided to share with you this year. Built in the 50’s it now has all the modern conveniences you will need for a comfortable stay. There are two bedrooms and a loft for sleeping. Kids and adults enjoy sleeping in the loft which is like a birds nest overlooking the cabin and the lake. It has a large aluminum dock for ease of boating, fishing or just relaxing. The kitchen is large for many people to cook and prepare meals at the same time. The long counter top allows for serving buffet style. which is a Maine tradition. The gas grill is handy right outside of the kitchen. Everything you need is there, so if you are flying in, just pick up your food and drinking water... and you are set. Our place is pet friendly.

About KATHE BIERHOFF

Norm and I have been married for 15 years, and he is from Maine and spent many childhood summers at camps on Embden. I fell in love with Maine and especially Embden Pond on my first visit. We currently live in an old bungalow in St. Petersburg, Florida and are still working full time. We have a wonderful life in Florida , however we will be spending many retirement months on Embden Pond. We spend all our vacation time at "camp", which is what the locals call it. Every May we spend a week opening and preparing the camp for summer guests and include a "to do list" of upgrades each year, as it our home too. I enjoy watching my husband putting in the dock, with his kindergarten friend, Le laughing as they work together in the lake. Norm's friends are always there for us to help us with our upgrades and eat at the camp! As we cannot be there as much as we would like, we really enjoy sharing it. We have finally named it "TALL PINES" after many, many options from friends. When you come there, you will see why the name fits perfectly.

KATHE BIERHOFF purchased this cabin in 2008

Why KATHE BIERHOFF chose Embden

Norm's parents were actually friends with the original owners of this camp. In the 50's, three couples, who were all good friends, had built their cabins next to each other. My mother-in-law still reminisces about the musicians who played as well as all the great times she had there. The cabin location is such a draw, that we have had a wedding on the lake there, many family gatherings and even a girls retreat birthday week. I enjoy socializing and shopping too! So girls, here are some of my favorites ; Reny's - the Maine experience store (my favorite and you MUST go there), Madison Thrift Shop, The Evergreens restaurant, Pinkham's corner grocery and Moxie Falls. I just love the people in Maine as they are the friendliest I have ever found. We rarely see the neighbors, but we always enjoy them and they are there anytime we need them. I consider one of them my "sister". That is another reason I love being there.

What makes this cabin unique

What we enjoy most about our cabin is the wonderful secluded privacy and the nature. I wake up earlier than I do at home, get the coffee and sit outside listening to the birds and the breeze, before my husband wakes up. When he wakes up, we sit on the deck and continue our peaceful contentment. We love watching the early morning fishermen and see the hummingbirds at our feeders. While here I even bake, which I do not have time or care to do at home. Somehow this cabin reverts me back to the days when women can just be. I love to relax with a good book on the deck, or at night reading inside while listening to the Loons. Every evening we sit by the campfire (as my husband is the campfire king). You will know that as soon as you see the size of the fire pit. We supply all the firewood you will need for your night time campfires. After my husband goes to sleep, I enjoy reading and even getting on my laptop, as I am doing right now at 9:59pm on May 22nd after 4 days of working my "honey do lists". This year we installed gravel and graded the driveway that was washing out, a new washer machine, a kitchen faucet, an AC unit (for the rare, few summer days it is warm) and carried many rocks to create our stone lined path. We enjoyed every minute while being there, working and relaxing at the same time.

Cozy, and Quiet Vacation

  • 5 of 5

This was a wonderful relaxing vacation for Ron and I. We had recently been through some personal stress and Kathe and Norm's cabin, just melted that away! They have thought of everything that one could want, while staying at a quiet, scenic area of Maine. Not only did they have a notebook with all kinds of ideas for things to do; but everything in the cupboards etc. are labeled for ease. The view from the lakeside bedroom, cannot be topped! It was awesome! The evening fires in the fire pit and the loon calls at night, what more could you ask for? The whole process of renting went very smooth, because of the friendliness of Kathe and Norm.

Though there was no television ( a good thing), there was plenty to read, and tons of games. I loved the Maine cookbooks. The local country stores, "Pinkam's and Griswold's, were great and everyone in Maine is so friendly and helpful. We had to make a second trip to Reny's because it is one store that reminded me of simpler times, when I was a kid. They stock everything.

I feel like I am forgetting something, because there is so much positive to include. But; I will end with the thought that if someone wants to have the best vacation in a beautiful place, then this is it.

Thanks, Kathe and Norm!

Enjoyed going "upta" camp on beautiful Embden Lake. Cozy well equipped camp right on the lake.

  • 5 of 5

This is a Maine camp, but without roughing it. Kathe and Norm have thought of everything. We could have left much at home. The drawers, cabinets and basement are well appointed with everything you might need and had forgotten. (I digress: In one of the cookbooks I even found some local recipes in an email. I was surprised to see that one of the folks on cc was Pam who taught me to swim in this lake some 49 years ago. It was good to see Pam's mom on this visit.) The location is on the best shore of one of the cleanest lakes in Maine...or anywhere. The sunsets are beautiful. The sights, sounds, smells of camp life on the lake are just as I recall from the camp of my youth which was only a few camps north of this which made our stay that much more special. Enjoyed the three local hummingbirds, the frequent visits by loons right off the dock, the duck family, and the spectacular bald eagle that perched in the tall pine right out front. Caught/released some fish. Enjoyed motoring around the lake. The kids had a great time in the kayaks. The big fire pit down by the water was nice in the evening. Kids swam and snorkeled. Played a lot of Rook in the evening. The porch is really nice. It has shade or sunny spots to suit. Very relaxing. We did not want to leave. The sounds of the loons at night, the moon shining brightly across the water and the waves lapping on the shore cannot be experienced anywhere else. The boat launch at the southern end of the lake is good. Check with Kathe and Norm if you need to park a large trailer before bringing your boat. We were able to find room for a trailer for a 14 to 16 foot boat. There is a small fishing boat, canoe and two good kayaks available on the property if you don't want to bring a boat. However, the lake is well suited for water skiing and floats. So you may want to bring a boat that can tow. The shallow areas are well marked so there is no worry if you are not familiar with the lake depths. Was able to tie my boat right at the dock and motor from the dock. There is plenty of shopping, Hannafords in Madison (on the way into camp), Pinkhams in North Anson, or the grocery store in Solon. Thompsons restaurant in Bingham is not too far to drive for a decent home style meal and homemade desert. Kathe and Norm communicate well. Check in and out was seamless. I gave the camp screen door one last open and shut just for the sound that evokes fond memories of camp life on Embden Lake.

A magical place!

  • 5 of 5

We waited last minute to book our vacation, and cannot be more grateful that Tall Pines happened to be available and we had a chance to spend an amazing, relaxing week there. We are frequent Maine-goers...it is our happy place and we have stayed all over the state over the past 10 years of our marriage. Tall Pines is definitely one of our favorite rentals so far and we will definitely be back! You just can't beat the coziness, the privacy, and the lakefront location. The placement of the windows in the one bedroom literally allows you to lay in bed with a priceless lake view. What a cozy place to read when it's rainy! The view from the living room, dining table and deck are also spectacular...each better than the next! We have rented many lake houses but this is truly "on the lake"...like a two-second walk off the deck to the dock. And even this early in the season, swimming in the pond was totally comfortable and the water was super clear. I could have stayed in all day! The house is well-stocked with anything you could need. We also appreciated the air conditioning when it was humid the first two days of our trip (also a rarity in a Maine rental). I can't say enough good things and Kathe is the sweetest. It's obvious this place is special to its owners and they want it to be comfy and wonderful for all who visit as well! We can't wait to visit again!

Just bring your suitcase!

  • 5 of 5

Norm and Kathy have stocked the cabin with everything you need . Very clean and comfortable. Stores and fresh seafood are nearby to stock the fridge and cabinets . Restaurants around if you choose not to cook. There's plenty to do onsite and many places to see whether it be an hour drive , a day trip or if you want to skip on over to Canada and then Come back. The possibilities are endless. We crammed as much as we could in while we were there and enjoyed downtime on the lake. There is something for everyone. Highly recommended for a couples or family getaway

Last week in July at Tall Pines

  • 5 of 5

We were looking for a camp close to Madison to visit family and friends, this camp was perfect. Growing up in the area, spending many summers, at camp, Tall Pines was a page from my childhood. The camp was set up great with all you'd want for the kids and adults. Privacy, family cookouts, swimming and more swimming. Rummy was played, ghost stories told, drinks were poured, and family secrets were spilt. Can't say enough except wished I'd had another week. The only issue was, because of not wanting to go to town, I missed out on seeing some people.

Great week!

  • 5 of 5

Even though we are local, we wanted to enjoy the lake over the 4th of July. The cabin had everything we needed. There were a lot of fireworks on the lake, which was enjoyed while sitting around the fire pit. Perfect after a day filled with swimming and kayaking from the private dock!

Last year we rented a camp that had a shared dock, which we were not aware of until people started coming and using it. This cabin's dock is not only private, but offers a nice ladder with flat rocks below to enter the pond without hurting your feet. The water depth is waist high but does get deeper at a nice decline. We were able to secure our friend's fishing boat to the dock, which was handy.

We highly recommend this rental!
