About the property

House, 3 Bedrooms + Convertible bed(s), 2 Baths, (Sleeps 7-8)

The 'North Shore Fisherman's Cabin' is a restored historic commercial fisherman's home built of logs around 1900. You are right in the heart of town within a block of everything- yet comfortably removed when you need a breather. We are less than 100 yards from the water. There are 3 well appointed bedrooms, 2 full baths, a huge dining room, a roomy pine living room with gas woodstove fireplace, a front cedar porch, and a natural slate patio. The original log home with it's well appointed kitchen and huge dining room is the core of the structure. The logs for the Cabin were hand hewn a century ago and show the broad ax marks from the original fisherman builders. The kitchen is thoroughly modern with stainless appliances, solid maple counter tops, and a two level snack bar. The property was completely renovated down to it's bones from 2003 to 2007, using recycled or repurposed materials wherever possible and is now a highly energy efficient home. The walls are adorned with local art and mementos of the great age of commercial fishing and logging here in Grand Marias. The view of the old harbor from the living room and the deck is stunning. There is also a view from the 3rd bedroom deck. Seagulls and fog greet you when you rise. The grounds of the property are planted with a variety of native and boreal flowering plants, flowering shrubs and fruit trees. It is a garden like setting with various perennial, annual, and produce plantings. The waxwings regularly invade the ash trees, along with fiercly dueling ruby throated hummingbirds. Visitors are encouraged to tour the property and observe the goings on in the gardens and the adjacent Boathouse! The Boathouse is an impressive timberframe structure that was built by the current owner as a workshop for building and restoring boats and for teaching classes and other public and private events. Stop in and see what's going on, maybe you will be recruited in to service to help on whatever project is under way! Please, no parties or large gatherings with non guests. We love dogs. Single dogs are allowed if under 40 lbs, must be clean and house trained and must not be left unattended and always kept on leash when outside. No dogs under 1 year old. If you are using the automatic booking function it will assess a $30.00 pet fee for one dog. This will cover one dog for 3 nights.

If your stay is longer than 3 nights or if you have more than one dog we will asses an additional $10 per night per dog after the first 3 nights.

If you have any questions please call to discuss your pets before booking. Any dogs larger than 40 lbs, and any dogs more than one must be approved by the owners.

Please give us a call if you have any questions.

Thank you!

About Todd and Susan Miller

The owners and managers of the Fisherman's Cabin are Todd and Susan Miller. Susan is originally from Duluth Mn and Todd from the Twin Cities. They have sailed the world's oceans together on their 35 foot sloop 'Snow Day', and have now settled down here in Grand Marais since 2003. Todd is a licensed Captain, and served on the local park board for many years. He is also active in community projects with area youth. Susan is the Special Education teacher at the local charter school. Todd's interests include leading a local dance band, building and restoring fun things, messing about in boats, and managing Real Estate. Susans interests include gardening, thrift store exploring, and cooking. They both love to travel and learn.

Todd and Susan Miller purchased this house in 2003

Why Todd and Susan Miller chose Grand Marais

We chose this location because it is very special. We are lifelong Miinnesotans and have been passing through Grand Marais our whole lives. We wanted a home on the North Shore, and we believe that Grand Marais is the jewel of the North Shore. Within Grand Marais we wanted to be close to the action and the water. Although this is a very small town, it has big shoulders when it comes to culture and beauty. We belive our specific location is magical because the big lake cools us in summer and warms us in winter. We never get tired of the many moods of Lake Superior and enjoy watching the lake from this property.

What makes this house unique

This is a great location for the summer festivals. Music and art seems to permeate the town and strains of music can be heard most times of the day and in to the evening. Artists are plying their wares in nearly every shop. There is always something interesting going on at the Boathouse next door, and North House Folk School is very close. On stormy nights the breaking waves send a deep rumble through the bedrock.

So close to so much!

This cabin is very spacious, yet feels cozy. The living room has two very comfy couches, a toasty gas fireplace, and a couple of side chairs. Plenty of space to enjoy a beverage and chat, watch TV or read one of the thoughtfully selected books on the shelf. The kitchen is beautifully finished with antique-looking cabinets and well-appointed with everything you might need to prepare a family dinner. There is a very large table in the dining room, great for a big group dinner or game night. Three bedrooms with comfy beds and the lovely touch of handmade quilts! Two full bathrooms, plenty of hot water, and a laundry room. Every single piece of decor seems to have been lovingly chosen, and if you ask the owners they will tell you the stories attached to the pieces and give you some fascinating stories of the area's history.

The property is only a couple of blocks from downtown, and right across the road from The Angry Trout. For my money though, the Dockside is a better choice. Excellent smoked fish! The cabin is also a very short drive from a number of hiking trails along the Gunflint Trail or Cascade State Park. We very much enjoyed our stay, and our two small dogs loved their daily walks down to the beach and on the municipal hiking trails!

Truly, this is one of the most unique and charming places to stay in the area. I cannot recommend it highly enough. Thank you Todd & Susan for being such gracious hosts in this one-of-a-kind setting.

We loved being able to walk everywhere in Grand Marais from this very central location, and was perfect for taking a class at the North House Folk School as it was just a block away!

Great cabin in a cute city. it was 20 below 0 and and due to the cabin being so large, it was hard to keep it warm but the gas fireplace helped and added to the ambiance. We had a wonderful time and the cabin was great.

Owner's Response: Thanks so much! That's the coldest we can remember in the 15 years we have been here! It's important to remember that when you run the fireplace it will trick the main central heating system in to taking a break because the furnace thermostat is in direct line of sight from the fireplace. The central heating may not kick in as much- leading to cooling in the far corners of the house that are farthest away from the fireplace. So it is best to let the fireplace cool down when it is getting to be time for bed so that the central heating system has time to kick in and warm up the corners. The entire home has been thoroughly reinsulated and modernized in the last 10 years and has low E windows. Thanks for staying with us and come see us again! Todd and Susan

Great all around

  • 5 of 5

The temperatures were below zero, but we were cozy in the Fisherman's Cabin. Comfortable beds, clean house, plenty of space for our group. Todd and Susan were kind enough to accommodate our bringing a Christmas wreath for the holidays. The only thing that would have been nice as an addition is if the fire pit had been cleared; though it was awfully frigid out, we might have considered a fire. We had a lovely time and would happily go back.

Hospitality at its finest!

  • 5 of 5

Cards on the table, we considered writing a poor review - only because we don't want competition to get back into this gem for next year! :) Honestly, we have only GREAT things to say because we so enjoyed our experience in the North Shore Fisherman's Cabin!

From the minute we booked on VRBO, to final check-out, this was a smooth, comfortable, and truly enjoyable rental situation. Todd and Susan understand hospitality - the cabin was home-y and welcoming, and they went above and beyond to help our entire family (pup included!) have a great weekend. Despite the fact that they were right next door, Todd and Susan struck the perfect balance of welcoming hosts - greeting us when they saw us in the yard, yet allowing us to continue with our plans and giving recommendations along the way. THANK YOU for a great Thanksgiving weekend getaway - we'll definitely be coming back!
