It is off the beaten path and serves as a convenient hub with direct access to the river – yet only 8 miles from the Philippi, WV where you can find restaurants, groceries, gas, pharmacy, hospital and more. The Arden Grade Road was once a main route through the mountains on the B&O railway during the early 1900’s and follows along the river providing spectacular views! HOUSE DESCRIPTION - Newly Renovated!

• Front Porch

• Spacious Back Deck (partially covered)

• Sleeps 10-12

• 4 Bedrooms

• 3 Full Baths

• Fully furnished

• Close to Philippi/ABU and many state parks

The Tygart River Guest House offers a spacious “old timey” front porch, complete with swing, rocking chair and plenty of easy lounging wicker furniture – great for lazy days on the river. High ceilings will greet you through the front entrance where original bead board walls whisper stories from the distant past and restored yellow pine floors pave the way to a more contemporary present. We have brought together period elements from the coal mining era joining them with contemporary colors and modern amenities.

The ground floor offers two bedrooms. The one directly to your left upon entering, features a classic full size wrought iron bed dressed in quilts with two lamps and nightstands, armoire and river views. The room to your right boasts a sunny disposition arrayed in hues of red and green. Its companions are an ornate metal queen size bed, ceiling fan, closet and comfortable chairs. Continue down the hall into the open Dining Room which is centrally located and acts as a hub for the whole household to gather between the Living Room and Kitchen. For the musically inclined, there is an upright piano dating back to the early 1940’s and a large country table with pullout extensions to comfortably seat 10 people. Additional seating can be found at the breakfast bar.

The Kitchen is equipped with microwave, dishwasher, full size refrigerator, gas cook stove, antique country sink and drain board and ceiling fan/light. Glass sliding doors separate the kitchen from a private back deck with patio set and a semi-private backyard view.

You’ll be right at home in the spacious Living Room with sloped ceiling and hardwood floors, leather couch, and loveseat. An oak armoire entertainment center houses a TV and DVD Player. One of the most unique features of this home is the large antique oak pocket doors at your disposal to close off the Living Room if more privacy is needed. There is a convenient full bathroom just off the Living Room with a shower and beautiful slate tile floors. On the opposite side of the house is a Laundry Room with washer and dryer, clean tile floors and laundry table. This room leads to another full bathroom with full size tiled shower.

Upstairs, there is a full bathroom with tile floors and windows on all sides giving it a bright airy feel with an antique claw foot bathtub for soothing relaxation. Exiting the bathroom, there is a bedroom on your left complete with a full size bed, roomy closets, TV and DVD player, full river-facing windows and carpeted floors. There is a gorgeous view of the river from the hallway as well, where you can perch for a look from above. Finally, we arrive at the bunk bed room to the right of the hallway. It also has a view of the river, full carpeting and two sturdy bunk beds to comfortably sleep four people. One bunk bed features staircase access to the upper bunk for easy access.

About Sherry Hubbard

Josh and Sherry Hubbard moved to West Virginia many decades ago as avid rafters & kayakers who loved the whitewater and the abundance of rivers and streams in the area. We found a place along the river we're still here! Now we have a growing family and have become knitted into the fabric of West Virginia. Josh is a local artisan crafting wood and metal into truly beautiful works of art. Sherry works from home as a freelance writer and graphic designer. We have a home next door to the guest house and are nearby if you have a questions or need a hand and we're always happy to help you plan your getaway to Wild and Wonderful WV!

Sherry Hubbard purchased this house in 1990

Why Sherry Hubbard chose Moatsville

Parts of the guest house date back to the early 1900's during the coal mining era when tracks of the B & O Railroad line ran directly through the community of Arden. Since those days, an extensive renovation and many amenities have been added to make a comfortable yet historic guest house. It's a great spot to gather with friends and family since you have the run of the place. It sleeps 10-12 easily and there are plenty of central gathering areas to spend time together.

What makes this house unique

This home is situated on the Tygart River with views from every bedroom as well as the front porch. It's a lovely out of the way place to catch your breath and enjoy the mountain air. Period elements from the early 1900's are still preserved in the home including original pine floors and bead board walls along with relics from the coal mining era. Josh is a West Virginia artisan creating art out of wood and metal. He built a driftwood gazebo next to the river which comes from local wood collected along the Tygart. We hope you enjoy!

Notes:
Cell phone reception is in and out although usually good in the hallway upstairs. Text messages come through. Emergency calls can be made next door if needed via land line. WiFi is available but slow due to satellite data restrictions. Please enjoy the upright piano. Though it is quite out of tune, it is an older piece adding character to the house and we simply ask that adults and children be mindful that they play gently. Note: Pets are considered. Please notify us if you would like to bring any with you for your stay. If they are approved we charge $35/pet but it does require prior approval.

Great River View

  • 5 of 5

A fine place for friends and family to gather. You have the River just outside of the house, and public access to the lake, about ten miles away. There is something for everyone to do, if they enjoy Nature.

Beautiful home but very close to a busy roadway.

  • 3 of 5

The guesthouse was beautiful and very clean. The upstairs area of the home did not have air conditioning which made it very difficult for the guests that slept upstairs. In the living room area close to the bathroom their is a decent size area on the ceiling where their is a water leak. Two chairs that were at the bar in the kitchen were broken and not safe to sit in. On the mailbox at the front of the property and on an eave of the house in the back their was hornets nests. Our dog was bitten several times by hornets. The property owner did take care of the hornets when she was made aware of what happened. The house sits very close to an extremely busy road. From what we could gather their is a big rock in the river just below the house that has become a place for teenagers to gather. So traffic was almost constant. On July 4th their was so many college kids below the house partying that the police came. I think we counted over 12 police cars that came and went trying to control the crowds. None of this we were made aware of when we booked the home. Across the road from the guesthouse is a breathtaking view of the Tygart River. It is perfect for fishing. We swam some but the current is dangerous. You have to stay close to the bank of the river. Overall I am glad that I went. Owners do need to make potential guests aware of the traffic that flows constantly before they decide to book.

This is the perfect spot for friends and family to gather. The River is just a stones throw away, and the lake and dam are close by. An enjoyable time was had by one and all.

Thank you Sherry.

Very nice house and so close to the beautiful river

  • 5 of 5

We loved the house had everything we needed as it was well equipped for cooking The rooms were comfortable The only thing I would add is that there needs to be screens on all the upstairs windows for small children for when windows are raised for safety The owners were friendly We used both porches and loved the river our grandkids are already saying they want to go back sometime It's a five star place

Owner's Response: We really enjoyed hosting this group. Great family! They even shared their smoked ribs with us...yum! Watching the children play and explore the river always brings back memories of our kids doing the same. We'll double check to locate the screens. They are typically in place so not sure what happened but that is a valid point and I will make sure they are in place going forward. We are always available next door if there is anything you need during your stay so feel free to let us know if anything is amiss and we'll take care of it as soon as possible. We woudl welcome this group again anytime.

Tygart River
Car: necessary

Arden is an off-the-beaten path village along the Tygart River that goes back many generations. Great for sunning, swimming, tubing, kayaking, whitewate rafting, photography, beach picnics. We have raised our family on the river and our kids love rock hopping along always discovering something new. The people are welcoming and friendly and the scenic beauty is hard to beat. It is not touristy and offers an alternative experience. There are many state parks in the area that that are definitely worth visiting: Tygart Lake State Park, Valley Falls State Park, Audra State Park. The area offers many festivals and local events. Many guests come for reunions, friends & family gatherings and to escape the city pace of life.
