About this property
Mid-Century Rivah Retreat with Dock, Fire Pit & Cozy Fireplace
Nestled along the Piankatank River in Gloucester, this charming cottage is an invitation to slow down, breathe deeply, and reconnect—with nature, with the people you’re traveling with, and with a simpler rhythm of life. From the moment you arrive, the river views, quiet surroundings, and cozy character of the home set the tone for a true retreat.
Inside, the house is warm, comfortable, and thoughtfully set up for real living. There are two cozy bedrooms designed for great sleep after days spent outdoors: one with a luxurious king bed, another with a full bed and a twin—perfect for couples, friends, or families. The bathroom features a refreshing shower and a hair dryer, and the home includes air conditioning, heat, WiFi, and a fireplace to make it comfortable year-round. The living space is welcoming and relaxed, ideal for reading, playing games, or simply enjoying the view as the light changes over the river.
Outside is where this home truly shines. A deep-water dock offers direct access to the river and plenty of space to linger. Dock chairs invite you to sit with your morning coffee, watch the osprey and boats drift by, or enjoy a quiet sunset at the end of the day. In the evenings, gather around the fire pit—one of our favorite spots—for conversation, stargazing, and winding down as the fire crackles. It’s the kind of place where phones naturally get set aside and time stretches a little longer.
The home is also very family-friendly. We provide a Pack ’n Play and a high chair, along with space for kids to play and explore, making it easy to travel lightly and settle in comfortably.
While the property feels tucked away and peaceful, you’re still close to everything you might need. Grocery stores and local essentials are about 15 minutes away, as is a nearby brewery. Merrior is just 20 minutes away for oysters and waterfront dining, and you’re about 30 minutes from The Tides Inn and the charming towns of White Stone. One of our favorite local spots, Adrift, is also an easy drive and well worth the visit.
Whether you’re coming for a weekend, a week, or a longer stay, this cottage is a place to truly decompress—wake up with the river, spend your days outside, and fall asleep to quiet nights. It’s a home designed for living simply, resting deeply, and falling in love with rivah life.

About the host
Hosted by Katie and Hunter Guerin
Hi, we’re Katie and Hunter—welcome!
We’re East Coast natives and currently live in Richmond, Virginia with our three young kids. As a family, we love to travel, explore new places, and settle into homes that feel comfortable, thoughtful, and easy to live in—whether it’s for a weekend or a longer stay. We’ve traveled extensively both domestically and internationally, often with kids in tow, so we truly understand what makes a stay feel smooth, welcoming, and worth returning to.
Katie is a natural planner and caretaker, and Hunter is a builder and problem-solver, which makes hosting a great fit for us. Professionally, we both spend our time creating things that support people—whether that’s through thoughtful systems, creative work, or hands-on projects. That mindset carries directly into how we host. We care deeply about clear communication, attention to detail, and making sure guests feel confident and supported from booking through checkout.
We host because we genuinely enjoy opening our home to others. We believe a great home base can shape an entire trip, and we aim to offer a space that feels calm, clean, and well-considered—never fussy, but always intentional. Our home is set up for real life: comfortable beds, a well-stocked kitchen, practical storage, and clear instructions so you can focus on enjoying your stay rather than figuring things out.
When we’re not hosting or traveling, we love spending time outdoors, cooking together, reading, building things, and exploring our local community with our kids. We value warmth, respect, and ease—and we hope that comes through in how we host.
Whether you’re visiting for work, family time, or a change of scenery, we’re glad you’re here and happy to help make your stay a great one.

Why they chose this property
We chose this neighborhood because we were looking for something that felt completely different from our everyday life in Washington, DC—a place where we could slow down, breathe, and truly unplug. When we first came to the Piankatank River in Gloucester, it immediately felt like an escape. The pace is gentler here, the views are wide and calming, and time seems to stretch in the best possible way.
What drew us in was the river itself. The Piankatank is peaceful and uncrowded, with calm waters that change beautifully throughout the day. Mornings are quiet and reflective, with mist rising off the water and birds moving along the shoreline. Afternoons invite you outside—whether that’s kayaking, paddleboarding, fishing, or simply sitting with a book and watching boats drift by. Evenings are our favorite, when the light softens, the sky opens up, and the sunsets reflect off the river in a way that never gets old.
The neighborhood feels tucked away and private, yet still connected. There’s a strong sense of care and stewardship here—people value the land and the water, wave as they pass, and look out for one another without being intrusive. It’s the kind of place where you feel comfortable immediately, where nature sets the rhythm of the day.
We also love how this area invites simple pleasures. Life here is about being outside, cooking easy meals, gathering on the porch, and spending real, uninterrupted time together. Coming from DC, where everything moves fast and schedules are full, this neighborhood offered exactly what we were craving: space, quiet, and a deeper connection to nature.
For us, this spot on the Piankatank River became more than a getaway—it became a reset. It’s a place to slow down, reconnect, and enjoy the beauty of coastal Virginia in a way that feels authentic and restorative.

What makes this property unique
What makes our property truly unique is the combination of its setting, its character, and the feeling it creates the moment you arrive. This is a place where classic mid-century charm meets an exceptional riverfront location, offering a stay that feels both special and deeply relaxing.
The property sits directly on the Piankatank River with expansive, unobstructed water views that change throughout the day. From sunrise to sunset, the river is always part of the experience—whether you’re enjoying your morning coffee, watching boats pass by, or winding down in the evening as the light reflects across the water. The deep-water dock is a standout feature, making this an ideal spot for boating, fishing, kayaking, paddleboarding, or simply sitting with your feet dangling above the water. Having direct, easy access to deep water is rare and adds a level of freedom and connection to the river that many properties don’t offer.
Inside, the home’s mid-century design gives it warmth and personality you won’t find in newer builds. Clean lines, thoughtful details, and a layout that feels both intentional and inviting create a space that’s cozy without feeling cramped. The fireplace is a favorite feature—perfect for cooler evenings when you want to curl up with a book, share a glass of wine, or enjoy quiet conversation as the fire crackles. It adds a sense of comfort and nostalgia that makes the house feel like a true retreat year-round.
What really sets this property apart, though, is the atmosphere. It’s not just a place to stay—it’s a place to slow down. Whether you’re gathered around the fire, watching the river from the windows, or spending the day on the dock, everything about the home encourages rest, connection, and presence. The balance of waterfront access, timeless design, and cozy livability makes this property feel distinctive, memorable, and easy to fall in love with.
