About Suella Darkins

I grew up in Oxford and London but have spent the past 35 years in Verona, married to a local Italian, bringing up our four children and teaching English in the state school system.

Suella Darkins purchased this house in 2000

Why Suella Darkins chose Veneto

When I bought the property in 2000 it was a complete ruin: the roof had caved in twenty years previously and a sizeable tree was flourishing inside the playroom. Two brothers, Alessandro and Agostino, both expert in conservative building restoration took three years to renovate the property, knocking down the outer walls and rebuilding from scratch, using the original hand-shaped local stone blocks. The house seems to have grown naturally out of the hill side which makes it the perfect idyllic rural escape from city life and stress but close enough to all the amenities. Monte Baldo is a magic mountain.

What makes this house unique

Underground streams abound here, and less than half a mile away from the hamlet a freshwater spring supplies pure drinking water to the surrounding area as far as Lake Garda.

Eagles fly high in the sky; deer. foxes, badgers and a huge variety of butterflies abound.

A perfect retreat from the summer heat.

Wonderful!

  • 5 of 5

Last year my partner and I rented Suella Darkins' house at Moie for 2 weeks. We loved it. It is modern, spacious, quiet and well furnished, as well as being good value. There are lots of things to do if you want to be active; from walking on Monte Baldo to waterskiing on the Lake to playing golf at Garda. For sightseeing and culture there is Mantua and Verona, including the famous Verona opera season. There is also the breathtaking cliffside chapel at Spiazzi next door. If you want to chill out you can watch Wimbledon on the satellite TV, read in the secluded garden or swim at the fabulous pool at the hotel at the bottom of the hill, or on a beach by the lake. The local wines are first class and there is a very good weekly market in Caprino. The kitchen has everything you need and there is plenty of space to eat inside if the weather is cool or wet. This year we are taking the house for 4 weeks with lots of friends and family coming out. What more can I say. Peter Briggs, Chichester, West Sussex.

Wonderfully atmospheric Home with gorgeous view

  • 5 of 5

This wonderful country home in the mountains next to Lake Garda was way beyond our expectations. It is beautifully built and furnished, very clean with an amazing and relaxing atmosphere. The views to the mountains from the bedrooms are stunning. We also enjoyed the kind hospitality of its owner.

We were extremely happy there and wished we could stay much more, hope to return one day.

Soggiorno molto piacevole

  • 5 of 5

  • 4 of 5

Notes:
The property is located in a rural hamlet where two local dairy farmers take their herds out to pasture each day and bring them back to the stables to be milked. Anyone looking for an 'away-from-it-all' reading and stodging holiday immersed in the bucolic sounds of Heidi's cow bells, green pastures and meadow fruits and flowers need never use their car once the food shopping has been accomplished. However there are abundant 'activities' within a 20 minute radius, including riding stables, hang-gliding on Monte Baldo, all the sports, swimming and sunbathing of Lake Garda including Gardaland, as well as the historical, literary and architectural delights of Verona, Venice etc. The kitchen is equipped with a 2-oven gas-fired cream-coloured Aga cooker which is usually turned off during the very hot midsummer weather. There is also a fitted gas corner hob as well as an electric oven/grill which cater just as well to the needs of 10+ family gatherings.
