Great Get-A-Way minutes from Estes Park

I was looking to get the family out in nature for a weekend and I could not have picked a better place. Cabin is very well cared for. Very comfortable (family of 5) and even had TV if you want. We did not get any cell service, which was perfect as we wanted to disconnect. If you need to do a quick email check, which we did a few times, you can walk or drive to the main road and "borrow" the art shop's guest wifi (was free for us).

Can't wait to stay here again. We'll likely book something this winter.

Nice overall, but a few improvements would help

  • 4 of 5

We loved this location and the serenity of the area. The living area was spacious and the upstairs bedroom, loft and deck made for a nice place for the kids. We didn't cook much at the house, though, so can't speak much to the utensils provided, the grill on the deck, etc.

The instructions left in the house were confusing in a couple areas, though. We were asked to strip all the sheets and start the first load of laundry. However, no laundry soap was available and we did not feel we should have to pay for that when we already are paying a cleaning fee. We would have done this if laundry soap was already present, but quite candidly, we have rented dozens of homes and this is the first time we've been asked to start a load of laundry, and that includes the homes were we weren't charged a cleaning fee on top.

We also found three different sets of instructions for the trash. One was to put in basement trash can (much too small), one was to drive it into Allenspark (really?) and the other to place it in the bin outside, but not to leave it out overnight. The bin was locked around a tree outside so it had to stay outside at all times. Would be good to ensure instructions are clear and consistent.

We loved staying at Big Owl. It was close to Estes. The cabin had everything we needed and more. We also loved reading about the history of the cabin.

Clean and secluded cabin, but it needs updates.

  • 3 of 5

The cabin was very spacious, clean, and the deck was amazing. The views are great, it's very secluded! However, here are some things we were never told in the cabin amenities or after booking it:

1. NO internet. In an age of cell phones, this was tough. We understand some people like going off the grid, but our families had no way of contacting us overnight for emergencies. (it was a girls' weekend without our kids and husbands) You have to go into Estes Park to get phone/internet connection. There is a landline for local calls only. The cabin manual says you can make outside calls with a calling card. (really?)

2. Towels - the cabin towels are old and need to be replaced.

3. Pillows - if you have neck & back issues, bring your own. The pillows need replacing.

4. Washing machine - you can only use HE detergent in it. They do not supply detergent, but ask guests to take all bed sheets and towels down to the laundry area and "start a load" before checking out.

5. TV is a small tube tv with DISH network. It has a VCR and a DVD player connected to it. After a long day of hiking and site seeing, sometimes relaxing and watch tv is nice. Maybe upgrade to a larger flat screen and a blu ray player?

We really hope the management/owners consider these things for future guests. We enjoyed our stay- the kitchen is fully equipped. We did a lot of cooking. The space is amazing inside and out. We also appreciated the cleanliness of the cabin- not a bug or cobweb anywhere.

Rocky Mountain High

  • 4 of 5

Overall we were very pleased with the cabin. The location to Estes Park was convenient yet we felt the peace and quiet of the property's remoteness. It was easy to access and clearly identified. As we love to hike, hiking trails were varied and accessible. However, we did voice some concerns to the management company at the end of our stay and they were courteous and receptive. The coffee pot needs to be replaced, the towels are in extremely short supply, the cabin has some minor maintenance issues that need to addressed. The upstairs bedroom and loft get warm so fans would be nice. The cabin needs a thorough decluttering and straightening. There is only one small TV in the loft. WIFI connection would be a bonus. This being said, I would still consider staying at Big Owl on my next visit to Colorado.
