About the property

Romantic One Room Cabin, Wood Stove, Outdoor Shower, Hot Tub, Bbq, 1920's Decor

Just outside of Austin, TX, nestled among the hills and streams of the Hill Country, lies the charming little village of Wimberley. Folks visit Wimberley to feel like they’ve traveled back to a bygone era where kids swing off ropes into creeks, everyone knows their neighbor, time slows down and summer nights under the stars last an eternity. At The Moonshiner Cabin we can help you embrace that nostalgic longing. This cabin was lovingly constructed, designed and curated by the owners, Jennifer and Gregory, who aimed to capture the essence of The Prohibition Era with a little twist of Steampunk. Gregory, a local craftsman, hand-built nearly every inch of the cabin including much of the furniture and all the light fixtures. From the moment you exit your car you’ll feel like you’ve left the hustle and bustle of your modern day existence behind. Once you step inside you’ll enter an era defined by cocktails, claw-foot tubs, flapper dresses, jazz music, pot stills and flickering lanterns. Don’t get us wrong, we love the luxuries of modern life, which is why our cabin has wifi, cable tv, a hot tub, and an award-winning Casper mattress, but whenever possible we tucked the modern world just a little out of sight. Gregory even designed a hidden tv to drop down from the ceiling! So, watch a movie, check email and soak in the hot tub, or make a pot of coffee, write an old-fashioned letter and watch the deer graze from the front porch. Whatever suits your fancy, we guarantee this is a one-of-a kind vacation rental cabin, and it will treat you to a one-of-a-kind retreat. We hope to have you as our guests!

We are strive to maintain the natural landscape of the property outside of the immediate area around the house to provide animal habitat and privacy. Our guests often see foxes, deer, a variety of birds, and other wildlife.

Exactly what my wife and I were looking for in a long weekend getaway.

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I had a wonderful time and was exactly what we needed. Truly enjoyed showering outdoors. This cabin definetly takes you back to simple times. Wimberley is less than 5 minutes away with plenty to do. We would like to come back when it is warmer to experience the swimming holes. We will keep this place on the top of our list of returns. The decor and workmanship inside and out is to be respected. EXCELLENT job on making such a unique place. Thanks again, Austin and Ashley P.

A Wonderful New Years Eve!

  • 5 of 5

This cabin has incredible design and and detail that even the wonderful pictures don't quite capture. You truly feel like you're transported to a different time! Everything you need is stocked and ready for your enjoyment. The hot tub and fireplace were very enjoyable. Our only regret is that we did not get to try the outdoor shower as it was below freezing most of our stay. Can't wait to try one of their other cabins soon! Also, a little plug for the amazing restaurant Jobell and the excellent Middleton Brewery just minutes from the cabin. Many Thanks to Jennifer and Gregory!

Perfect getaway. Very relaxing place. Lots of attention to detail.

  • 5 of 5

This is our second property from Gregory and Jen that we have stayed in and we’re always impressed! This place is perfect for a getaway, and close to everything you eat to get to. Incredibly charming, there is so much attention to detail here that it added another level of fun to the place.

We loved hanging out on the back porch, the Firepit, and the hot tub. The only problem was we couldn’t stay more than two nights cause we had to get back to work!

Truly unique cabin close to town.

  • 5 of 5

Quiet and fairly private cabin only a couple of minutes from Wimberly square. Prohibition era aesthetic with nice mechanical touches. Owners are super nice as well. Will be back!

Wimberley is a fun place to stay with lots of great local activities. Here are some of our top recommendations. Enjoy!

In the summer, we recommend taking a dip at one of the local swimming holes. We’ll leave a list of area swimming holes in your rental, but Blue Hole is our favorite and its refreshing, spring-fed water is just 3 minutes away (reservations required). Jacob's Well (reservations required), The Blanco River (buy a swim pass at 7A Ranch), and Cypress Falls (buy a swim pass at Cypress Falls Event Center) are great choices as well. The Corral Theater is a great place to catch an outdoor movie on a Fri-Sun night. Bring a camp chair and enjoy the show! If you don’t mind driving over to San Marcos (20 min.), rent a tube from the Lion’s Club at City Park and tube the San Marcos River. You can tube 'the horseshoe' part of The Guadalupe River by renting tubes from The Tube Haus on FM 306 (20 min). The glass bottom boat rides at TX State’s Meadows Center are really wonderful for all ages and educational, too!

There are several area wineries with beautiful grounds: The Driftwood Estate Winery, The Wimberley Valley Winery, and The Duchman Family Winery (with the Italian restaurant, Trattoria Lisina). There is also Bella Vista Ranch, a local olive orchard and olive oil producer. Their grounds, shop, and tasting room are open Mon, Thurs, Fri, and Sat. If you’re looking for a wine tour, we hear good things about Jodie with Taste of the Hills at 512-667-0518.

Some of our other favorite activities include enjoying a beverage and watching the sun set at The Shady Llama Beer and Wine Garden, taking a hike up Old Baldy, going ziplining at Wimberley Ziplines, grabbing a yummy house-brewed pint at Middleton Brewing or Wimberley Brewing Company, taking a jog or walk along the hike and bike trail at Blue Hole Regional Park, catching some live music at Linda’s Fine Foods, or Ino’z and taking a morning or evening drive along The Devil’s Backbone (Hwy 32). We also love day trips to Pedernales Falls State Park (about 40 minutes away) or Luckenbach/Fredericksburg/Enchanted Rock (about 1/1.5 hrs away). Guests also ask about local hiking trails and San Marcos has several greenbelts that are great spots for hiking with the Purgatory Trail being a favorite in our house. Our local Blue Hole Park also has some lovely nature trails and a three mile hike and bike trail.

For dining, we highly recommend The Leaning Pear, Community Pizza (gluten-free and dairy-free options), or Jobell on RR12 just outside of the town center. Hays City Store is another good option about 10 minutes from Wimberley on FM 3237. The Salt Lick BBQ is a fantastic choice for that hill country BBQ experience, located about 15 minutes away in Driftwood. Trattoria Lisina is also in Driftwood and it’s a great for a special occasion dinner. It’s located on the grounds of the Duchman Family Winery & vineyard, which is beautiful. Other Wimberley restaurants include: Vittles (breakfast & lunch gourmet grilled cheeses, smoothies & salads), The Back Porch (good, casual outdoor dining on Cypress Creek), Brewster’s Pizza (gluten-free and dairy-free options), I’noz (average food, but nice setting on Cypress Creek & live music on weekend nights), Kate’s Place (good brunch spot), Linda’s Fine Foods and Wimberley Café (popular for breakfast). We also have a handful of great food trucks throughout Wimberley and our favorites are Pho-Lisha’s, Triforks, The Salty German and St. Pita’s. You can also pick up good breakfast tacos at Shamrock Tacos and Mima’s. We do our best to keep updated menus for these restaurants in a binder in each of our rentals.
