Overview

About the property

Rustic lake front cottage with boat dock and great views!

No kidding, the view is spectacular with Mount Riante in the distance. We are on the main channel facing due South which is important because it means NO MOSQUITOS and there is always a nice breeze.

We are just outside the city limits of Hot Springs which means we are minutes away from everything, 5 minutes from Oaklawn Park, yet located on a private, quiet peninsula.

We have a boat dock available with a marina a few hundred yards away to gas up the boat. You will put your boat in at Hill Wheatley park and hop across the main channel to our boat dock.

We have covered parking for your vehicle or your boat trailer. You will want to put your boat in prior to coming to cottage as we have a steep driveway.

About Chris Schmiedeke

Myself, my wife and our two girls live in Dallas, Texas. My wife is originally from Hot Springs and we travel here as much as time will allow.

We love the Hot Springs area, and wanted someplace on the lake where we could get away.

Chris Schmiedeke purchased this cottage in 2004

Why Chris Schmiedeke chose Hot Springs

We love this property because of the spectacular views and southerly breeze. We had a place in a cove at one time, and the mosquitos were unbearable.

Our home is a rustic 50+ year old cottage built right on the lake. Multiple decks to lounge on, a boat dock and steps right down into the water.

Check the photos and reviews to learn more about our vacation home. If you are expecting the Ritz Carlton, this is not your place. This is a fantastic rustic cottage where you can hang out at night and spend your days in the water. It is private and quiet with the rumble of boat engines and waves to put you to sleep on the deck.

What makes this cottage unique

There are multiple decks to lounge on and great swimming. We are minutes from everything by both boat and car. It is a perfect location.

Not what I expected..

  • 2 of 5

I did not realize how steep the driveway was. To me this was roller coaster STEEP! I had a severe anxiety attack due to the drive to the cabin and driveway. There was an open access to the master tub, which looked like it was in process of repair. But this allowed, access for a large rodent to the cabin. We had to leave after that first night and stay at the Hampton Inn for the remainder of the weekend.

Relaxing Lakefront Girls Weekend

  • 5 of 5

We planned a quick 2 day getaway for a girls weekend and this was a great property and location. The views were amazing and we enjoyed sitting on the beautiful deck and having a glass of wine at sunset or coffee in the morning. The home was everything we needed for a weekend stay and the location is close to downtown and other conveniences like Walmart. The description of the property is very accurate; this is a rustic, quaint property and very nice especially for the price. It offered several nice amenities like indoor/outdoor speakers, great air conditioning and plenty of space. The property is dog friendly as well which I loved so I could bring my sweet fur baby with us. As others mentioned the only cons are that the beds were a little hard but nothing major for a short stay, there didn't seem to be a dustpan which would have been helpful just to sweep up bits of dog food from the floor and there were a couple dead bugs on the sink in the bathroom off the kitchen . . . again, this is a rustic place so nothing we didn't expect. Some of the photos on the site are no longer up to date and some of the furnishings have been changed. There are 2 new large, comfortable leather couches in the living room but there is no longer an outdoor couch on the deck. This was replaced with adirondack chairs which still provided good seating but we wished we had the nice lounge seating on the deck. We had a great time and I will definitely be booking the property again on our next visit! Thanks for the great stay!

Quaint, relaxing, fun. Wonderful decks.

  • 4 of 5

Seems like an original cottage/cabin amongst a lot of new large homes - nice authentic character. Loved the various levels of decks and all the large windows facing the lake. Spent a lot of time outside watching the lake. Dawn and dusk were the best. (Now why can't I get up that early for work?)

Very active lake with constant boating (summer holiday weekend). Floating dock gets noisy with waves. Didn't bother us at all, just don't choose this lake for perfect stillness and silence. It's a fun lake and the covered upper deck/porch is awesome for watching the boats passing by. Lower deck is nice for being in the sun(also partial shade from large tree). Morning coffee and happy hour are both lovely on the lower deck. You're nestled in nature and will have bugs and spiderwebs in the backyard. Beautiful old trees, etc. Citronella worked fine for us for flying insects, and I would not let boyfriend kill the spiders on the dock (just go around the webs).

Very comfy living room. Good kitchen inventory (dishes, flatware, pots/pans/baking). Enjoyed the spacious layout throughout the cottage, and the lighting options in the living room for winding down.

Mattresses are hard as noted by others. I didn't mind, and liked the numerous soft pillows. Liked having two bathrooms. Very small shower in one and very large soaking tub in the other. Plenty of nice towels.

The driveway is two steep short hills, a little intimidating the first time. Car port is in between hills and we left my tiny car there and used the rest of the way to the porch as added exercise. These are short hills - no big deal if you are able to walk easily.

We brought our dogs and they liked lounging in the sun and standing on the steps going into the lake. Our silly dogs are afraid of waves but like water, so the steps were just fine for them. The nice neighbor dog (roams freely, sociable with people and dogs) often tried to get them to swim with him, but hey, we have city pups. If your dog doesn't mind waves it will love swimming here. Only one place to enter and exit the lake - the stairs - due to seawall, so keep an eye on your pup. We brought long leashes for them (homemade from ~40 yards of thick rope) and they moved throughout the backyard at their leisure.

Definitely recommend the cottage. It's quaint and cozy. Enjoy!
