NEW VACATION RENTAL! Private 5 acre forested, hillside retreat overlooking Tomales Bay and the hills of West Marin, just a few minute walk to historic Inverness town through a private trail. Great for larger family event or very special stay for a couple or group of friends. The “Oaktopia Refuge” is nestled amidst the oaks of the Inverness Ridge and is surrounded by parkland of the Pt Reyes National Seashore.
A chalet and 2nd cottage have an Old Inverness Charm and a warmth that will either compel you to spend your time relaxing on site, or serve as a welcome refuge after a day of hiking; swimming; boating; biking; bird-, seal-, whale-, and elk-watching; oystering; or simply sightseeing. Oaktopia Refuge is located 5 minutes from historic Pt Reyes Station, with its bookstores, local artisans, and restaurants; is just minutes to the hidden and not-so-hidden beaches of Tomales Bay; and is perfectly located for easy access to all the jaw-dropping hiking trails and Pacific Ocean beaches of Pt Reyes National Seashore.
The 2 story chalet has a front entrance that overlooks a deck, a lily pond, fountain, and the Inverness Ridge. The backside of the chalet has sliding paned wooden doors that open to a hot tub and classic views of Tomales Bay. The ground floor also has a full kitchen, dining area, propane-powered hearth, pullout couch and a piano. The upstairs is a slanted-roof, open-loft area with 2 full beds, and can also house a child’s bed (sleeps 5-6 comfortably).
The cottage has a rustic, tasteful wooden interior, wood-burning and electric furnaces, a full kitchen, a main room with queen bed and dining area, a bedroom with a double futon on a frame, and a deck with a gorgeous view of the bay (sleeps 3-4 comfortably). There also is a separate wooden shingled studio that can be used for a yoga or meditation space, as a game room, or as an art studio, or a fun sleeping cabin for kids in the summer. While Oaktopia Refuge is perfect for couples and friends, it is also child and family-friendly, with a swing-set, a swinging hammock as well as a large stone patio for basketball or badminton.
Only 1 hour from Golden Gate and Richmond Bridges. We invite you to come stay in this unique and special retreat – for just a weekend to re-charge , or for a full week or 2 to really get to know the extraordinary natural wonder and cultural treasure that is Pt Reyes National Seashore. If you have a smaller group, please inquire.

We are a family of 5 (the 5th was on the way when this photo in Patagonia was taken!) who love to travel to the world's most beautiful places. Living in San Francisco, we have spent many, many glorious days and nights in the Point Reyes area. It is a magical part of the world. We have always dreamed of having a place all our own there, a place close by where we can relax, hike, kayak, bike, see wildlife, read, cook well, eat well and enjoy friends and family. We found a very special retreat...a place our twin boys named 'Oaktopia Refuge' --a play on Utopia (that's what they feel about the place) and Oak trees (lots of Oaks up there). If you like living the good life in a rustic setting, this place is for you. Because there are two dwellings on the site, it is large enough to host an extended family or group of friends, or small enough for a weekend get-away for a couple or a small family with kids.
The Owner purchased this chalet in 2009
Oaktopia Refuge is perfectly located -- only 1 hour or so from San Francisco or Berkeley. You can walk down a trail and get to the town of Inverness, and check out its galleries and library, or drive right over to Pt Reyes Station and buy phenomenal organic produce and local cheeses, or hear music at the Dance Hall. Or you can bike a few minutes to Shell Beach or Heart's Desire Beach on the bayside, or drive a few minutes north to Abbott's Lagoon hike or McLure's Beach on the Pacific Ocean side, or head west to the Lighthouse and Drakes' Bay. Finally, why not plop your kayak or canoe into the water and transport yourself that way?
We find that we are able to escape the stresses of modern life in a remarkably rapid timeframe and get into a different zone with each other. Our biggest problem is deciding whether to stay in and enjoy the comfort of the chalet and cottage, or venture out for a hike, a swim, or an art showing. We also find that the retreat is large enough to have 2 families up, without getting in each others' way, or small enough for parties of 2-4.
Inverness is a playground for me. I can think of a dozen things I want to do right when I drive into town. Yet, when I arrived in Oaktopia, I suddenly felt like I didn't need to go much of anywhere. The view encompasses so much of lovely Tomales Bay and the hills beyond. The towering trees are a feast for the senses. The homes are appointed with everything you need, if not everything you want. Go ahead. Settle in.
What a beautiful, unique setting for my birthday weekend gathering of close friends and family. The two cottages are furnished and filled with love, care, and hospitality, and the property has both cozy, wooded seclusion and a wide open view onto Tomales Bay (especially enjoyable from the backyard hot tub). We enjoyed cooking together in the well-appointed kitchen (note that the stove/oven is smaller than standard size) and sharing meals around the generous dining table. Special features - the piano, the mini basketball patio, the swing set - add to the warmth and character of this clearly beloved vacation home. There's a nice balance between craft and design vs rustic, natural beauty: the papyrus shading the pond, the woodwork amid the woods - it's quintessential West Marin charm. And just like a previous renter/reviewer, on my first night we caught sight of a fox strolling through the backyard - maybe he's a regular! We also saw a pair of deer, a bald eagle, several hawks, and at night, heard a chorus of coyotes.
It was one of the most special getaways I've ever had. I hope to have the good fortune of returning to this beautiful place, one day soon.
My wife, daughter, and myself stayed in August and the weather was perfect (high 65-78). We drove up the private paved driveway cut into dense woods. When the forest opened up to the chalet we said to each other, "We scored!", and that was the feeling we took with us a week later when we left. Amazing property with lots of personality, within minutes of bay-side and Pacific Ocean beaches, trails, Pt Reyes National Seashore, state parks, and more. It's so secluded, we couldn't see any houses from most of the property, or hear any neighbors all week. Squirrels are your neighbors! The first night, we were sitting on the living room couch, looking at the fantastic bay view when a fox strolled through the yard. He paused for a few moments to give us a good look at him and then moved on: so cool. It's not a luxury accommodation (no TV, microwave, etc when we stayed). Bring your own electronics if you need to. We brought a small TV & Roku with us (internet worked perfectly). Think great rustic clubhouse in the woods. Think quiet and isolated. Think fresh air, nature, and million dollar view.
This wonderful property was perfect for my extended family of 8. We had 4 children (ages 4, 8, 8 and 12) and four adults. Two cottages was a perfect for a little separation as well. There is plenty of room on the property for kids to play. The location is perfect for exploring the Point Reyes Seashore, and we took 2 day trips to San Fran to see the city. My husband and I sat outside each night after everyone went to sleep and had a glass of wine, watched the stars, and listened to the deer and other critters come around. Kids loved the banana slugs and pond creatures! The owner was extremely helpful with suggestions about the area and I would consider this an enormous benefit to renting this property. Some people should note that my 5 star rating is based on these being cottages/cabins and the expectation that comes with this.
This tucked away gem was perfect for our little families long weekend away. It fact it was so wonderful we stayed an extra day. Great location for beaches, drakes bay oysters, exploration and good food and coffee. Hot tub has a view to die for. My kids were entertained with swing set and trying to catch tadpoles. House was roomy and kitchen well equipped. Nice rustic feel. And like I said can't wait to come back.
Beautiful property and cottages. I spent a birthday weekend here with friends and family and everyone loved the place. Plenty of room for everyone, great kitchen, hot tub overlooking the bay. It's tucked up in the woods and very private. Owner was helpful and easy to deal with. Highly recommended!
