About Granera Family
We are a family of 5, Nicole and Carlos, and 3 girls. We love surfing and life at the beach so divide our time between San Jose and Playa Hermosa. We have an onsite manager, Diane, that will welcome you and help with any arrangements.
Granera Family purchased this Villa in 2011
Why Granera Family chose Playa Hermosa
We love Playa Hermosa and have a property close by on the mountain. We've been coming here to vacation for the past 10 years and buying Casa Mia and remodeling the hotel has been a project we've enjoyed with all our heart.
What makes this Villa unique
Taking walks on the black sand beach, the surfing, the magnificent sunsets, are a few of my favorite things about living here. From the deck chairs surrounding the pool or cooking in the outdoor kitchen, you can see, feel, and hear the ocean and enjoy the breeze. Our rooms are clean and comfortable but you will prefer to read a book under the sun umbrella with a cool drink in hand. The location is perfect for many different day trips, such as canopy tours or Manuel Antonio Park, where you can see monkeys and sloths.

Casa Mia exceeded our expectations! Carlos our host, Sonia our housekeeper & Erick the chef were exceptional! Our favorite excursions were Tortuga Island and Manual Antonio. Although the ocean in front is beautiful it is NOT for swimming but the pool is an afternoon oasis. We loved the daily visits from the macaws and other critters. The washer is not accessible but Sonia graciously will do any laundry left on the bench. Of note the driving style is aggressive with tailing and frequent passing. We cannot wait to visit again!
Heaven on Earth...
We had a family trip planned celebrating my wife's parents 50th wedding anniversary and my daughter and niece's high school graduations. We are from Colorado and Texas and wanted to have a good place where we could all stay together, there were 13 of us in all... Carlos and Nicole helped us arrange our airport transfers, provided great recommendation to our private Chef for the week (Eric), great transportation options (Cuchi) and the rest was just magical. The house accommodated all of us very well, with private rooms with dedicated baths and great outdoor spaces including the awesome pool we used daily! What we did not realize is that the house is very close to many restaurants and awesome beach bars, all right next door, and the BLACK SAND beaches were pristine, watching the surfers and the big waves daily was a bonus. Eric our Chef was amazing with his creative cuisine, he became one of the family before it was all over, Eric also became our tour guide on a couple days as well. I would also like to mention Sonya, she was there every day to clean for us including laundry! It was a dream vacation that did not disappoint! The reason for the success of our trip was meeting the Casa Mia crew, they took great care of us! Thanks again so much for the incredible experience you provided for our family. We hope to come back and see you again!
The stay here was perfect!
We were a group of 17 staying here for a wedding party and it was just the perfect size accommodation for our group. Everyone was able to have their own bed, had plenty of lounging areas outside to mingle and hang out, loved that the kitchen was outdoors and very open with a large table that also was able to sit everyone. We were right off the beach so waking up and having those morning views were beautiful. There was a 24 hour mini mart next door which was very convenient and there were also restaurants within walking distance for breakfast and dinner which were delicious. Carlos the owner did a fantastic job on checking up on us if we needed anything. Also Sonia who was the cleaning lady did such a great job on having everything well kept and cleaned up by the time we got back from our daily activities, she even went above and beyond to let us know she could wash a few clothing items for some us (did an atv tour, so got pretty muddy), so that was really nice. I would have to say overall we had a very good experience here, every person in our group had nothing but good things to say about staying here. Hopefully in the future we can plan to stay here again!
Wonderful stay at Casa Mia
Casa Mia was the perfect accommodations for our group of 14. Everyone had their own private space when they needed it, and the outdoor common area was perfect for socializing and meals. Prior to the trip, Nicole was extremely responsive and helpful with any and all questions and concerns our group had. And Carlos was at Casa Mia to meet us upon our arrival to give us a lay of the land, on the morning of our departure to see us off, and provided us his phone number in case we needed to text him. Additionally, the housekeeper Sonia was fantastic and went above and beyond in creating a clean and inviting atmosphere.
Chef Erik was apparently on vacation the week of our stay, but Chef Johann was a fantastic substitute. We reserved Chef Johann for 3 days and he would meet with us before each meal to discuss what we wanted to eat and did all of the grocery shopping. Despite a slight language barrier, Chef Johann was extremely personable and even made accommodations for one member of our group who followed a vegan diet. The food was delicious and in overabundance, and after day 1, we reduced our chef provided meals to just breakfast and dinner.
As mentioned by other reviewers, the beach at Casa Mia is not a swim beach. But that did not detract from the attractiveness of the property. Several days were spent split between basking on the beach and cooling off in the property pool which was mere steps from the beach. And Casa Mia is within walking distance of several restaurants and beach bars such as "The Backyard" which hosts a weekly surf competition on Saturdays.
After a few days, our group ultimately decided to rent 3 compact vehicles from Economy in Jaco to explore the other nearby beaches. We went to Playa Mantas, Playa Blanco, the beaches in Manuel Antonio National Park, and Jaco Beach. All of the beaches were beautiful in their own right, but Jaco Beach was the best for swimming and younger children. I would highly recommend renting a vehicle(s) as the cost of transportation via cab to nearby beaches adds up quickly.
Finally, Carlos and Nicole will set up any particular excursions that you would like to do. Several from our group did a half-day of ziplining, cliff jumping, and waterfall rappelling through Jaco Canyoneering which I highly recommend for the more adventurous travelers. We also did one day in Manuel Antonio which was amazing.
I highly recommend Casa Mia for large groups travelling to beautiful Costa Rica!!
It was a dream
We are already planning we will stay at casa Mia again it was so amazing just heaven right on the beach there were 15 of us we took the red eye we were all exhausted casa Mia check in was 4pm we arrived in Costa Rica at 7am we went to this amazing restaurant next to casa Mia and sat down to eat next thing we knew Carlos came over introduced himself made us all feel very welcomed told us we could get into casa Mia early so we could freshen up and change into bathing suits so awesome the beach is beautiful the waves are out of this world casa Mia is pretty much outside living besides your rooms so beautiful I told my husband I wanted to build a home like this I really thought there would be bugs but no we ate all meals out doors getting up in the morning with the rooster and listening to the birds just amazing we were all very comfortable I loved having private rooms Carlos and Nicole are just amazing what ever we needed they were there they booked our excursions all we had to do was show up and pay so awesome...one of our family members left behind his back pack at a restaurant we went to we called Carlos he took care of it and they held on to there bag until we could pick it up and don’t get me started on chef Erick OMG!!!! His food was amazing we only hired him originally for 1 day after we ate his meals we had him back for the next 2 days I wanted to stuff him in my suitcase and bring him home it was such an amazing feeling to come back from ziplining all day and he is already there preparing dinnner wow so awesome thank you Carlos Nicole and Erick we will be back have beautiful casa Mia ready for us ❤️❤️❤️
Our family can wholeheartedly recommend Casa Mia in Playa Hermosa. It's a beautifully situated home, right on the beach. The home is within walking distance of a number of great beach-side restaurants (try the Tuna Poke) and some small markets to buy the important things (i.e.:mangos) and only a 15 minute drive from Jaco, where there are grocery stores, shopping, surf lessons, and a beach that you can swim on.
The home itself is beautiful. You walk in through a doorway of bougainvillea flowers over a deep pink doorway and into a welcoming villa, with 9 rooms (each one with air-conditioning and a separate bathroom) centered around a swimming pool and living area.
Everything not a bedroom is outside - the full kitchen, the lounge area ,the common area, etc, which allows you to listen to the ocean, feel the breeze, and gives the house a natural "gathering place" so you don't feel that your group is separated.
Having everything outside worked great as well, even during the dry season, as the breeze from the beach, the fans and the shade combined to make the house a temperate place to be. Also, Donia Sonia is the housekeeper and she did a wonderful job keeping the place clean and easy to be in.
We can't recommend hiring their chef highly enough - Erik prepared delicious food, and it is certainly comparable or less than going out for dinner for 12. We did discover that three meals a day was a bit much the food is so abundant we could have done breakfast and dinner easily.
Additionally, please know that this is not a swimming beach. You can wade in a t low tide, depending on how comfortable you are, but its definitely a surfing beach and, though stunning and eminently walkable, not a place to plan on spending all your time in the water, but the pool offers a perfect alternative as well as Jaco Beach with umbrellas to rent and a much more swimmable coastline.
Finally, I cannot say enough about Carlos and Nicole as hosts. Not only did they help us organize everything prior to arrival, but Carlos swung by on our first day spent over an hour with us calling people and talking logistics. He was always available via text for more plans and advice and is somebody that you want to have a beer and conversation about life with, not jut plan a ZipLine Trip.
Overall, highly recommend Casa Mia, Carlos and Nicole and Costa Rice!
Playa Hermosa attracts the best surfers from around the world or you can take a private surf lesson, but there are many other activities, such as SUP, canopy tours, kayaking, bird watching, horseback riding, yoga, Tortuga Island Tour, hiking to waterfalls, or visiting the Turtle Rescue Center,
