This property is in a perfect location if you're wanting to spend time in Volcano National Park. It is literally about 5 minutes down the road.
The property was ready when we arrived, and we had no trouble accessing it. This place is quite literally right in the middle of a rainforest. We arrived after dark, and when I opened my car door, it sounded like the rainforest setting on a noise machine! It was so cool. Thom was a great host and answered any questions we had very promptly, both before and during our stay.
Everything was nice and clean, with comfortable beds, plenty of hot water and lots of fresh towels. The kitchen was well stocked, and all the appliances were clean and ready to use. There were plenty of fans and A/C units, so we were able to keep air flowing and it was quite comfortable.
The master bedroom is on the bottom floor, which appears to be a garage that was converted into living space. This is actually great because it's much cooler downstairs. There's a small step up into the master bedroom, so be aware of that -- it can catch you by surprise.
Volcano National Park is spectacular, and it's worth spending a day or 2 there, depending on how much you want to see, and how much you're willing to walk. Start your day early, and there will be fewer crowds. You can pay for your park pass on your phone, so no worries if there's nobody at the entrance.
We also went into the park after dark, and the rangers guided us to an easy, 1 mile round-trip route out to view the lava flow, which was an incredible thing to see. Absolutely worth the walk. Then we stopped at the Thurston Lava Tube so our kids could walk through it in the dark with flashlights, which they said was spooky and super cool.
Hilo is not too far away, and there is stuff to do there as well. We went to Rainbow Falls, Akaka State Park, and there's also a small zoo as well.
There are some good restaurants around Volcano Village. We had breakfast at the Crater Rim Cafe inside VNP. They have a breakfast buffet for $12 a person. We also had breakfast one morning at the Lava Rock Cafe, which was very good. We had dinner at the Thai Thai Bistro, and it was excellent. Delicious Thai food, and there are some Western choices on the menu as well for those who prefer them.
