Over the Rainbow is located in an extraordinarily tranquil and unspoiled setting on the border of the National Park in Reef Bay, on the south shore of St. John. The stunning 260-degree views include the south shoreline of the National Park all the way to Ram’s Head, plus miles of blue Caribbean sea and lovely sunrises over Reef Bay, and the glow of sunsets behind Fish Bay. Reef Bay Beach is a usually deserted white sand beach that is a 10-minute hike. The beach is one of St. John's most undiscovered and virgin National Park beaches, where sea turtles still lay their eggs and where romantic beach walks are a very private affair. A one mile hike along the shoreline brings you to a second beach at the head of Reef Bay while other trails take you on more challenging hikes through the National Park to Lameshur Bay, Bordeaux Mountain or Rams Head. It's a four-mile drive into Cruz Bay, but Reef Bay is well off the beaten path, so few tourists ever explore this beautiful and relatively unknown area of St John.
Over the Rainbow is a 2-bedroom, 2-bath villa that consists of three connected buildings, that are built in a semi circle around a terra cotta tiled garden courtyard. The three buildings contain the great room, the master bedroom and the guest bedroom suites. You park below the villa and climb stairs up to the courtyard, where your entrance to the great room, guest bedroom and master bedroom is located. The great room features 16’ x 8’ screened doors that open to an east facing stunning view into The National Park, plus a very intimate and private pool and sundeck. Tiled decks surround the pool, and a gazebo off the pool offers a shaded place to contemplate the peacefulness and beauty of this divine setting. A smaller deck off the master bedroom offers a view of sunsets over Fish Bay in the west.
Large screened sliding glass doors on the east and west sides of the great room open to gorgeous views and also create a relaxing indoor-outdoor living area with constant cooling breezes off the water. Terra cotta tiled floors, exposed beams and pastel colors create a soothing interior and a 40” flat screen TV and DVD, a 2-speaker MP3/CD player/stereo, and wireless internet provide the electronic entertainment. There’s dining for four in the great room, or outside in the courtyard, or on the pool deck or under the gazebo at a table seating four.
The kitchen includes a 4-burner stove with oven, refrigerator-freezer, microwave, dishwasher, blender, coffeemaker and a suitable assortment of cookware and dinnerware. A washer/dryer and a BBQ grill are also included
The master bedroom suite (king bed) and the guest bedroom suite (king bed) both have a private tiled bath. The master bathroom has screened walls that create a charming shower and bath area. The master bedroom also has its own private deck and deck furniture providing a cozy spot to watch the sunset over Fish Bay.
We think the views from Over the Rainbow that look into the National Park and down the pristine southern coast of St. John have to be the islands best, although our friends on the north shore might take issue with that opinion. When you add total privacy and a very quiet and romantic setting, this island home is a very special place that is like no other on St John.
We truly value the peaceful and tranquil ambiance of Over the Rainbow but there are times we also really, and I mean really, enjoy the restaurants, bars, shops, people and atmosphere of the unique island town of Cruz Bay. We've traveled to other Caribbean islands and in our view there's no Caribbean town that is as safe, colorful and downright enjoyable as Cruz Bay. The truth is, we like this town so much that we bought a condo in Cruz Bay, and when Over the Rainbow is booked, which is quite often, we love staying in Cruz Bay at our other St. John treasure - a condo appropriately named Hideaway, which is part of Lavender Hill Estates. Hideaway is a 1 bedroom, one bath condo that is an easy walk to the Beach Bar, Mongoose Junction, the ferry dock and everything else in town. Hideaway gives you great access to the fantastic bars and restaurants of Cruz Bay, but Over the Rainbow is a world apart from Cruz Bay with it's quiet privacy and away from the maddening world feeling. It's always nice to have a choice of settings for a St. John vacation
Owner/Manager purchased this villa in 2007
We’re a couple who really love the beauties of nature, things like unspoiled views of the mountains and coastline of the National Park, peaceful walks on a usually deserted beach, sitting by the pool in undisturbed privacy, where you see no one and no one sees you, and being outside and listening to the quiet, where the only sounds are the surf breaking on the beach and the songbirds in the trees. These are some of the exceptional qualities that make Over the Rainbow a very special home in a truly beautiful setting. The privacy, tranquility and magnificent views are definitely a nature lover’s dream come true.
There’s also something very warm and inviting about our home that gives it a decidedly romantic flavor. That’s not just our opinion, for the guest notes I’ve read indicate that our home is a favorite of honeymooners and couples on a lovecation. Some of the guests stated that they honeymooned here and then came back on their 5th or10th anniversary and the view into the National Park was exactly the same. They’re right, the National Park insures a timeless view, but rest assured that our home never stays the same for we’ve always got a project underway to improve its coziness, comfort and appearance.
We love this home and we’re always working to make it a more enjoyable experience for our guests and us. We like to share this beautiful setting with others, so we keep the price fair and affordable so you can experience what we call the awesomeness of Reef Bay. If you like a dash of excitement and adventure tossed into a bowl of natural beauty, you’ll like spending magic nights at Over the Rainbow.
Over the Rainbow was built on the hill that overlooks Reef Bay and because it sits on a small ridgeline it is one of only two homes that have views to the east and the west. Throw in some of your favorite music, a cold beverage and some warm sun and you’ve got a relaxing and romantic place to be alone and enjoy the moments that make life special, and this is a very special place, unlike any other.
We spent the first week of August at Over The Rainbow and could not have been happier with the house. We wanted something that had an island feel, had a fantastic view and wasn't just like any other custom built vacation home. If you want stainless appliances, granite counter tops and top of the line furniture, then this place is not for you. That said, this house was perfect for us. The house was actually much nicer in person than in the photos. The layout was perfect for a family of four with two teenagers. The master bedroom/bath is separated from the main house & second bedroom so it's private, but not too far removed. The kids enjoyed having their own private area, too. The outdoor space was beautiful. We spent many happy hours under the gazebo overlooking Reef Bay. The pool was a nice and well maintained. The house is not air conditioned but that was never an issue. There are walls of screens on either side of the main living area so there was always a constant breeze throughout the house. The bugs were not an issue either so we never used the mosquito netting over the beds.
We were a little nervous that the photos on the rental site did not show the kitchen but figured if it was that bad we'd just eat dinner out every night. We didn't have to worry. The kitchen is small but very well stocked. Actually stocked much better than some of the larger vacation homes we've rented in the past. We did cook in two nights and used the gas grill. The rest of the time we ate out (Longboard -- very good; High Tide -- too touristy and the food was NOT good; Joe's BBQ - awesome; The Tap Room - great food & beer; Sun Dog Cafe - good). We packed lunch for the beach many days, stopping by Sam and Jack's Deli for sandwiches. Highly recommend!
If get a chance, find the pathway down to Reef Bay. There are no roads to it so you need to do a little hike (very easy and only about 5 minutes or so) We waited until the last day to investigate this beach but wish we would have done so sooner. It's so different than all of the other beaches on the island and gorgeous in its own way.
Another great vacation in St. John. We would not hesitate to rent Over the Rainbow again on a future trip to the island.
My wife and I have just returned from a great week at Over the Rainbow and since there hasn't been a review written for a while I thought I would post one.
First of all, we are not perfectionists and we don't have to always have the hundred million dollar experience. That said, we loved the villa. It is great for a couple or two and some children might even be satisfied here because of the private pool. Money can't buy a more beautiful view, from either side. The pool is not huge but very refreshing and the surrounding deck is great with plenty of nice furniture and sun or shade and it is very private. It was pretty windy most of the week we were there but not a problem. The temps were very nice and only a few showers during the week. The villa is very comfortable and accommodating. We did not do a lot of cooking but it would seem that everything was provided. The villa is not air conditioned so if you are one of those who cannot do without, this is not the place for you. We did not have any trouble sleeping with the fans and breezes. Days were not a problem. We liked the location, about 10-15 minute drive from Cruz Bay, but very quiet and private. Driving on St. John is not for the faint of heart but I had no problem with my little Jeep and even my wife never complained. We drove all over the island. We rented our Jeep at the St. Thomas airport and came over on the car ferry. Our greeter was very nice and led us to the villa from the ferry and gave us the rundown on the villa.
We ate at Jake's in the Lumberyard for breakfast (twice), Cruz Bay Landing (great hamburger) and Woody's (ok seafood, loud). We had great service at all and it was interesting to me that none of our waitressed were from the VI. We took the Reef Bay hike offered by the National Park but other than that we toured on our own.
The owner has done a great job of furnishing everything you could need and I was impressed with his narrative in the villa book. It made our stay very personal and it is obvious that he is very proud of his villa and enjoys shari. The only thing I could hope for if I ever get to return would be a tv in the bedrooms. It is definitely not a big deal and I certainly didn't come to St. John to watch tv but we have gotten a little used to watching a little tv to fall asleep.
Like I said earlier, if you must have something to do every minute, this is not the place for you. But if you want to relax in one of the most beautiful places this is it.
This is my second year at this house. I love it. The view is stunning. It overlooks national park land so very private with no light pollution from either houses or other islands. No AC but u really don't need it with all the breezes. I will be staying here next year too if I can manage it. I do want to put in a plea for other guests to feed my "adopted" feral cat Rainbow. She is a brown tiger-striped cat and was emaciated when she first came crying at my door. You will recognize her because her tongue hangs out of her mouth and she drools a bit. I think she has had some kind of mouth injury. She can eat but looks awkward doing so. I've been fattening her up for two weeks now on canned and dry food. She has a tougher time with dry food but can eat it. Please continue to help her survive and also give money to the animal care center of St. John so they can continue their spay/neuter work. Rainbow, I hope you are still here when I come next year!
