About Jean Sylvia
I built this house in 1988 as a single mother raising my lovely daughter who now lives in California (much too far away)! Now married, I live in downtown Bar Harbor with my husband, across the street from my three lively and lovely granddaughters. As young girls, my daughter and her cousin spent countless hours combing the backwoods of our property and collecting moss. Their grand plan was to make wreaths to sell to the tourists - leading to their fame and fortune! The small hill where they found the best moss, they named 'Moss Mountain.' Although they never sold a wreath (I'm not even sure they completed one), they spent hours in our backyard playing, laughing and planning their futures, as little girls love to do. I'll always treasure those days and those girls, and it is this fond memory that gave rise to the name 'Moss Mountain Cottage.'
Jean Sylvia purchased this House in 1988
Why Jean Sylvia chose Town Hill
Mount Desert Island has been my home since I graduated from college (I won't tell you how long ago that was) and I love it here. During the summer I hike and bike the trails of Acadia, comb the beaches to collect sea glass and sea-tumbled rocks, and take in all the island has to offer in unique shops and gourmet restaurants. During our cold and snowy winters, I take early morning walks or snowshoe on the breathtakingly beautiful (and quiet) carriage roads, spend time with my family and friends, and read some great books I've been meaning to get to all summer. When I travel away for any length of time and start yearning to see the mountains of Acadia and smell the sea air as I cross the Trenton bridge onto MDI - that's when I really know how much I appreciate and love my island home.
What makes this House unique
I love the quiet and the privacy of the homes around Indian Point. Sitting on the back deck and listening to the evening chatter of frogs in the bog, the morning birds that wake you instead of an alarm clock, eying the deer as they shyly peak out from the woods, and taking in the beauty of a full moon when it rises above the giant cedars - will all contribute to your restful vacation on MDI.

Wonderful place that felt like Home
This is one of the most well equipped homes I’ve stayed in. Jean has thought of everything you could need. It’s a very comfortable place and feels more like home than a rental. Jean is great to work with. The location is very convenient. It’s close to Acadia and Bar Harbor.
Cathy and her sisters were wonderful guests. They left the property sparkling clean and were great at communicating with us every step of the way. We are so pleased to know they enjoyed their stay as much as we enjoyed having them. They are welcome back anytime.
Perfect getaway for Acadia National Park Exploration with 3 small kids!
We had a wonderful in this peaceful cottage as our home base! It was quiet, clean, well stocked. We were so surprised to receive a kind welcoming gift including delicious homemade jam! What a perfect touch. We have 3 kids six years and under and this was a great place to rest while not out swimming, beach combing or hiring. The kids watched some classic Disney movies and played some new games like Go Fish that were in the home for us use. They also got their first taste of Saltwater taffy and loved it! The rooms were cool with the air conditioners, the beds comfortable, the towels soft - I could go on here about all the details that made this like a home away from home! Thank you so much for your hospitality. We loved exploring the nature of this beautiful part of Maine!
Thank you Brigitte for all your kind words. We strive to make the cottage a comfortable place for our guests - so that they feel right at home. The extra touches are nothing elaborate, but simply to let you and others know that we appreciate your staying with us. You were wonderful guests who left the place as clean as you found it and we appreciate that more than you can imagine. You and your family are welcome back to Moss Mountain Cottage anytime.
All the comforts of home but even more organized!!
We had a wonderful stay at Jean’s home with our two young boys. It was so comfortable being there, lacking nothing. The boys enjoyed the DVD collection early in the mornings, since they aren’t allowed much tv at home. There was something for everyone. My favorite part was the local organic blueberries which Jean so graciously acquired for us, in addition to the welcome basket filled with homemade jam and veggies from the garden. The binder is one of the best I’ve seen. There were clear directions for everything, and where to find things. The carpeted stairs were perfect for our kids - note there is no baby gate at the top, so carpet was important to us, just in case. All the appliances worked well. The place we stayed next in another town was ok but really made us long for all the comforts that Jean provided, including towels and linens!! Our only point of caution to future guests - the beds are very soft, which are cozy for kids but can be an issue for a bad back.
We truly enjoyed hosting Julie and her family at the cottage. She privately sent me a suggestion of putting a safety lock on the cellar door, which is a great idea and which we will do soon to prevent children from tumbling down the cellar stairs.
As for the beds, as I told Julie, we've been told by others that the beds are very comfortable - in fact one guest ordered the same king bed we have while they were still at the cottage since they said it was the best night's sleep they'd ever had. I think it as all a matter of preference. One bed, which Julie and her family did not use is very firm and another will be replaced with a new mattress next summer - so we might try to find something on the firm side again so that our guests have plenty of options.
Julie and family were terrific guests - clean and very good communicators. We would happily rent to them again in the future.
Charming, beautifully cared for home in the woods! Lovely!
The house was meticulously cared for and in pristine condition! The owner, Jean made special arrangements to add 2 window unit air conditioners to accommodate a health issue! Everything we asked for and more, was taken care of and she was readily available once we were staying in the house. It was a wonderful place to stay and she could not have been better to deal with from start to finish!! We will definitely be back!
Amy - it was our pleasure to host you and your family for your visit to Mound Desert Island. Making sure we installed the air conditioners was not a problem for us - we had been thinking of doing that anyway as our summer nights can be pretty humid.. As for any other things we did to prepare for your visit - you were our guests - and we were happy to do whatever we could to ensure that your stay was as comfortable as it could be. You did your part by maintaining our cottage as we would. Your family is welcome back anytime.
Lovely cottage and great location
Jean and Bill provided one of the nicest, neatest, and best supplied cottages that I have rented through VRBO/Home Away. The cottage is very tastefully decorated, but still comfortable and homey. There are plenty of supplies that are so helpful to guests staying for a few days or more. Clear explanations are left for guests to locate items, or how to operate devices. All the detail certainly helped to make our stay very pleasant and enjoyable. The area of the cottage is quiet, which is a plus, though everything, Bar Harbor and Acadia are very close by. I would definitely return to Moss Cottage again.
What a lovely review Paula. We do try to make things easy and convenient and as a result have attracted some amazing guests, just like you. We can't thank you enough for the extra care you took in keeping things clean, being respectful of our cottage and also for being great communicators. We love sharing our cottage and would be so happy to host you again in the future - you were terrific!
Great location, comfortable, clean, well stocked, and the owner is super friendly and helpful.
I have stayed in many vacation rental properties and this one is in my top five.
Don't think about -- book this house!
We work hard to make sure our guests feel at home while vacationing at our cottage and it pleases us immensely when they appreciate what we've done. Thank you Angela for the review and for being a great guest. We would highly recommend you to any host as well.
