About Jean Sylvia

I built this house in 1988 as a single mother raising my lovely daughter who now lives in California (much too far away)! Now married, I live in downtown Bar Harbor with my husband, across the street from my three lively and lovely granddaughters. As young girls, my daughter and her cousin spent countless hours combing the backwoods of our property and collecting moss. Their grand plan was to make wreaths to sell to the tourists - leading to their fame and fortune! The small hill where they found the best moss, they named 'Moss Mountain.' Although they never sold a wreath (I'm not even sure they completed one), they spent hours in our backyard playing, laughing and planning their futures, as little girls love to do. I'll always treasure those days and those girls, and it is this fond memory that gave rise to the name 'Moss Mountain Cottage.'

Jean Sylvia purchased this house in 1988

Why Jean Sylvia chose Bar Harbor

Mount Desert Island has been my home since I graduated from college (I won't tell you how long ago that was) and I love it here. During the summer I hike and bike the trails of Acadia, comb the beaches to collect sea glass and sea-tumbled rocks, and take in all the island has to offer in unique shops and gourmet restaurants. During our cold and snowy winters, I take early morning walks or snowshoe on the breathtakingly beautiful (and quiet) carriage roads, spend time with my family and friends, and read some great books I've been meaning to get to all summer. When I travel away for any length of time and start yearning to see the mountains of Acadia and smell the sea air as I cross the Trenton bridge onto MDI - that's when I really know how much I appreciate and love my island home.

What makes this house unique

I love the quiet and the privacy of the homes around Indian Point. Sitting on the back deck and listening to the evening chatter of frogs in the bog, the morning birds that wake you instead of an alarm clock, eying the deer as they shyly peak out from the woods, and taking in the beauty of a full moon when it rises above the giant cedars - will all contribute to your restful vacation on MDI.

Owner's Response: Thanks Critia. You and your friends were fantastic as well. I had company arriving the day you left and the cottage was left so clean that it made for an easy turnover for our next guests, also arriving that same day. You are welcome back anytime!

Great house for a vacation on Mount Desert Island

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed our stay. The house was clean and had everything we needed. It is a very private location (surrounded by trees). We would definitely stay here again.

Cheers for the quiet side of the island!

  • 4 of 5

This was our first family vacation to MDI and it didn't disappoint. We enjoyed that Moss Mountain is on the "quiet side" of the island and we explored some of the areas that we may not have ventured to if we had stayed in Bar Harbor. Our welcome couldn't have been nicer. We were greeted by fresh flowers, taffy and a welcome note. What a lovely way to start our vacation! Jean also provided information on everything you can think of - places to eat, hike, shop, etc. We kept the Acadia book and map in the car during our stay - it was so useful! The cottage was clean and homey. Really perfect for a relaxing vacation. The house was also the perfect size for our family of four and we enjoyed the movies and games that were available. We stayed in the room with the queen bed (upstairs) and the kids decided to share the other upstairs bedroom rather than have someone downstairs solo. The downstairs bedroom is across from a full bath and it would be a nice set-up for a multi - generational trip.

A lovely place to stay on MDI!

Great stay at a great property.

  • 4 of 5

We had a lovely stay at Moss Mountain. The property was exactly as advertised and very well maintained. My husband and I have stayed in many vacation rental properties all over the USA and abroad, and I must say, the kitchen in this property was the best stocked in terms of kitchen gadgets, pots and pans, etc. This made being on vacation even more relaxing!

The property was close to Acadia National Park (7 miles) and close to Long Pond -- great canoeing rentals -- just 7 minutes away! The house is about a 20 minute drive to downtown Bar Harbor, and on a very secluded and beautiful property which we loved.

Jean was extremely responsive (sometimes within 10 to 15 minutes of emailing she'd email back).

A bit of home, in this central MDI location. What a great stay !

  • 5 of 5

We just returned from a wonderful week at the Moss Meadow Cottage.

This house was an excellent choice. It was a central quiet location with touches of home.

Jean provided great info prior to and during our stay. We enjoyed a surprise gift basket upon our arrival with fresh lettuce from her garden, homemade strawberry jam and some wonderful Maine sweets. This was a nice touch and set the tone for our week.

This house is easy reached from both sides of the Island, and served as a great home base. Rooms and spaces were larger and a bit more update than they looked in the photos. There is a nice open deck, and a new gas grill. Plenty of room to park our cars and bikes. It was nice and quiet as the house is set-back from the road. Window fans and skylights upstairs were all we needed to stay cool. Downstairs we only used the AC one afternoon. Kitchen was well equipped and spacious. Beds were comfy, and the water pressure was welcome after a long day of activities. With all the wet weather, mosquitoes were heavy all over the island, but Jean had plenty of bug spray on hand.

This location served as a great base to cycle to and from ACADIA, be sure to check out the Pretty Marsh Picnic Area, a hidden part of the park, just south of the house.

We highly recommend this house, and working with Jean. She was very easy to work with and welcoming.

Acadia is one of the most beautiful places to visit.

Relax, enjoy, drink some Blueberry Ale and eat some Lobster !

Owner's Response: Thanks Ann for such a nice review. It was great hosting your family and we were so happy to hear that the cottage was all you hoped for and more. I also appreciated your leaving the house so clean and tidy. It made the turnover for our incoming guests go very quickly. Thanks again and we hope to see you at Moss Mountain Cottage again in the future.
