This Maui Sands Condo Is A Gem Offering Old-world Hawaiian Charm.

Maui Sands is a peaceful, low density ocean-front condominium complex offering vintage old Hawaiian charm. Located on the most desirable west side of the island in Honokowai at the northern end of Kaanapali. We are low density and geared towards relaxation. The sundeck offers a perfect perch to watch the breathtaking sunsets while simultaneously looking at the beautiful islands of Molokai and Lanai. Turtles are often spotted, and during whaling season, there are so many of these majestic animals that one visitor referred to it as “whale soup!” Monk seals and spinner dolphins are also spotted from the property.

Unit 719 is a private, second-floor unit that has been totally remodeled, offering hardwood floors, solid cherry cabinets, granite and glass mosaic tiles in the kitchen and granite and travertine in the bathroom. The unit offers beautiful furnishings, two flat-screen TVs, Wi-Fi, an iPod docking station, and original artwork. The living room sofa opens up to a queen-size comfortable bed offering convenience to families. The kitchen is completely stocked and the unit has both ceiling fans and air conditioning.

Three parallel reefs in front of the complex offer beautiful snorkeling and many conveniences are located within walking distance of the condo. For example, nearby, there is a large grocery store, health food store, fish market, farmer’s market (on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays), the ABC store, a gas station, a coffee shop, ice cream shop, pizzeria, Subway, Mexican food, Duke’s restaurant, etc. Old Lahaina town is only five miles away and the Kaanapali beach resort is only two miles away, offering shopping, golf, spas, restaurants, and all types of water activities.

Smoking and pets are not allowed. A parking spot is assigned to the unit.

Carol and Jim are the owners of this lovely unit. Jim is a retired tech executive and Carol formerly worked as a neuropsychologist and an educator. After gutting and remodeling their beautiful unit, they were able to enjoy living in it for several years. Now it’s time for them to return to their home in Half Moon Bay, California.

We came to Maui for our 1 year anniversary. We had great weather & a great time! We got to relax snorkel, work out at Lahaina Crossfit, go to the race track, BBQ right out front, etc.!

We really enjoyed the kitchen here and BBQ out front overlooking the ocean. The snorkeling out front is the best and we swam with huge turtles! Loved it!

Honokawai is located on the Northwest shore of Maui, with views of the islands of Molokai and Lanai across the channel. Maui Sands epitomizes old school Hawaii ambiance. This is a low density property, with beautiful grounds, including mango and banana trees. We are a very easy short walk from some lovely beaches and a Honokawai park. There are many good local restaurants, a large grocery store, two farmers markets, a health food store, a coffee shop and some great spa facilities, all within a 3-5 minute walk. One of the favorite things about this location is the Farmers Market that is a short walk away across from the Honokawai Beach Park. They hold a special outdoor produce market on Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings, but they offer fresh organic produce and a deli from 7am to 7pm, 7 days a week.

A short drive south to Whalers Village, and further on to Lahaina brings you to great Front Street shopping and historic sights. The Historic town of Lahaina has something for everyone, from Warren and Annabelles Magic Show (some of the best close hand magic we've ever seen) to shopping and the Award Winning Ulalena show at the Maui Myth and Magic Theater. You will have no problem finding great entertainment.

The Wharf in Lahaina has it's share of wonderful excursions to choose from as well. We particularly like Trilogy for a day trip to the Island of Lanai. There are many sunset cruises to choose from, fishing, sailing, and whale watching trips to fit most budgets.

North towards Kapalua there are 3 more championship golf courses, as well as fabulous beach walks and mountainside hiking! Nothing like a sunset view from the side of a volcano!

We are within minutes of some terrific restaurants and a short drive from many many more. Ocean gear such as fishing equipment, snorkel gear, and kayaks can be rented within walking distance. There is a bicycle and scooter rental across the street.

Notes:
This unit is perfect to snorkel, paddle board and kayak right off the shoreline! There are three volcanic reefs that run parallel to the shoreline. During low tide, the inner area, between the seawall and the first reef is perfectly protected for keiki to play in the water and build sand castles. Between the first and second reef, the water is between 7' and 4' deep, perfect for swimming with the turtles and enjoying a morning swim. Outside the second reef, and inside the third, is a wonderful labyrinth of lava nooks and crannies that provide great snorkeling!

Would Definitely Stay Again After Some TLC

My family of four stayed at this rental 4 nights. We tried to highlight the pros/cons that were most relevant to us, but keep in mind that everyone has different comfort levels, and we absolutely did enjoy our stay.

Pros:

Manager Heather is exceptional - responsive, kind, thoughtful. We messed up and showed up too early. She and the cleaning professional appeared initially flustered, but they kindly accommodated us when they did not have to. Heather also answered all questions via email that we had, and quickly. Location - walk to amazing farmersʻ market, coffee shop, ocean. Kitchen - had everything you could need - pots, pans, blender, coffee maker, utensils, portable dishes, dishes, large fridge, all appliances. Size - perfect for our family of four. Noise level - one night was noisy (remedied by my husband just talking to a neighbor over the balcony), but others were not at all. Although basically sandwiched between two parking lots (one for the condo, one for the neighboring complex), youʻd never know because the trees blowing in the wind and the sound of the ocean block out most noise and trees make a pleasant view. Complex View – Whale watching is a short walk away!

Cons:

BEDS - Beds were horrible. The bedroom bed was rock hard, and the living room sofa bed was basically a memory foam topper on an old lumpy sofa bed mattress that tilted toward the head of the bed, so you sleep with your head lower than your feet. Luckily, my kids can sleep anywhere. Beds can make or break your stay, and the adults did not sleep well at all.

Cleanliness - The cushions on the chairs, the decorative pillows on the bed, some of the sheets in the closet, towels (bath and beach) showed wear and stains. Chair cushions looked dirty. When I saw the decorative pillows looking soiled, I asked about the comforters and how often they were changed out. I was told every month. Everyone has different comfort levels, but that grossed me out. However, the cleaning professional gave us clean comforters, and the manager instructed me that a clean comforter was in the closet. If I didnʻt ask though... The woman cleaning tried to say that our bodies donʻt touch comforters. They do in my house! The unit needed a regular deep clean to clean wall stains, dirt/dust under furniture and on baseboards. With overall TLC/deep clean, getting rid of soiled cushions/pillows, and a change of beds (at least a topper in the room), weʻd give 5/5 stars instead of 3/5.

Owner's Response: Nothing is more disturbing to the owner and the property manager than having an unhappy guest. Especially when some of the issues could have been easily fixed for them. Our past reviews reflect our standards. We are very careful with our cleaning practices, and we check the appearance of walls, floors, linens and upholstery with every stay. Our contract reads thus: “If the premises appear dirty or damaged upon Check-in, Guest shall inform Homeowner or her property manager immediately.” I did receive a text from the guest, and texted back they were early, and to let Marietta clean the unit before moving in. If the unit was still not clean, we most assuredly would have fixed it. We did agree to an early arrival of the guest, and they arrived much earlier than we were expecting them. Instead of allowing our staff to clean thoroughly, they moved in, on top of her cleaning efforts. I am not surprised that the guest felt things were missed. Cleaning is something we like to be meticulous at, and our staff knows what they are doing. Taken point by point: -The cushions and decorative pillows are all less than a year old, and we cannot find the stains. We do clean the cushions as needed. -The comforter is encased in a duvet which is a stylish removable cover that gets cleaned regularly, however, most of our guests choose not to use it at all, given the climate, and we note this when cleaning (was it found by the cleaner on the chair, the floor?). Our cleaner happily loaned them a comforter from her storage. -This condo is a second home for the owner. She and her husband lived in it for several happy years before re-locating. The bed and couch were purchased with their taste in mind, and this is the first time a guest has said the bed was too hard. We do check the sofa bed regularly; as well, there is a new cool comfort topper on it. It is noteworthy that the sofa was purchased new in 2013. -We go through towels with every stay and replace them as needed. The beach towels have been replaced, as well, recently. In short, we do not feel the need for a “deep clean”, as we clean the unit well and thoroughly with every stay. We are sorry that the kindness of our cleaning staff in allowing the guest to go ahead and move in several hours early made cleaning difficult for her, and a less than thorough job may have happened as a result.

Nice Location and Nice Condo!

This condo was perfect for the two of us! It is in a great location and had lots of extras that we were able to use. The ice machine in the freezer and the cooler we found in the closet were very nice to have. We used the AC sometimes during the day but usually the ceiling fans kept us comfortable. Don't miss the turtles down the road at Pohaku Park. They were swimming near the shore during the day and we also found some resting on the beach around sunset. The ocean is just a short walk away with a nice area for watching the sunset. Unfortunately there was a lot of noise around us daily as they were working on the unit below us for a few days. Then they brought in a backhoe and a bobcat skid loader. That was noisy starting at 7am daily except on the weekend. They appear to be working on the steps to the ocean breaking up concrete and doing some landscaping in front of the building next door. Lots of work in the parking lot outside our patio hauling dirt and scraping the blacktop too. So noisy! Just a little bad luck for us but they are improving the property for future guests! We loved our visit to Maui - We recommend taking a Road to Hana Tour, going on a whale watching tour (more than once), the Elvis Impersonator show and having Prime Rib at Kimos.

This was an unexpected situation due to a sinkhole at the oceans edge, and was a safety issue. We do not normally allow any work to happen on the property before 8am, I am very sorry they started early! Maui Sands condo

Loved the decor of your place and location,

But it was a little too light in the bed room for my wife, due to the stairwell lights from the other apartments even with the shades down.

We did get cigarette smoke from the end unit due to wind conditions.

But I would recommend it others who ask.

Heather was very helpful when we had a question.

A lovely, peaceful home away from home

The condo is really lovely and perfectly maintained. We loved the decor and the ambience, and the amenities were perfect. There were considerate touches like a needle and thread to replace a button, some spices and condiments so we didn't have to buy everything new. And the lanai was perfectly sheltered so we could sit in the shade and be protected from too much sun or even a rain shower. We loved this place!
