About Shelly

Mermaid Extraordinaire. I create safe, sweet, sacred spaces to share with travelers who appreciate the joyful experiences this life has to offer. My rule of thumb: I would never rent a place that I wouldn't want to live in myself. I am shellfish that way...I cherish style, comfort and joyful experiences. I hope you do too!

Shelly purchased this apartment in 2005

Why Shelly chose Playa del Rey

Mermaid Manor is located in So Cal's last-best-kept secret-beach town! A time warp with everything you need to be self contained and still accessible to all the craziness that LA has to offer. is a place I would enjoy if I were traveling to California. This magical place is located in So Cal's last-best-kept secret-beach town... the sleepy beach town of Playa del Rey. Walk to Toes Beach, Del Rey Lagoon, Ballona Wetlands, Marina del Rey. see the 'Hollywood' sign & the snow at Big Bear Mt. Playa Del Rey village offers 3 quaint coffee houses w/ free WiFI, a dry cleaners, Post Office, Mo's Sports Bar w/ Pool tables, Liquor Store, Gordon's Market, Flower Shop, Mail Box etc., Pet Store, Barber shop, Beauty Salon, Multi cultural Restaurants. Excellent accommodations at Playa del Rey

  • 5 of 5

This property is perfect! Immaculately clean and accommodating - big and spacious. My elderly Mother and I visited California to see my nieces and this property is between them. It was a great place to gather, sit around the table and talk. My Mother taught her granddaughters how to make apple pies in the kitchen. It was perfectly set up for the "teaching event". There is even a rolling pin in the kitchen! How often does that happen? There is a short walk to the beach and close beach parking if you don't want to walk. I ran the bike trail every day and very much enjoyed the views.

We visited the Ronald Reagan museum and if you time it right, it only takes about an hour to get there. It is beautiful! We also visited the Griffith Observatory and took a tour of Paramount Pictures. We drove to New Port Beach and ate lunch on Balboa Island. Local to this property, we ate lunch at Playa Provisions and I highly recommend the fish tacos. The pizza from Hank's is also very good and easy to find and pick up if you don't want to wait on delivery. We also took a helicopter to Catalina Island and rode the Catalina Express back. I loved this island and will definitely go there again! We didn't have much time to stay on the island and you need to plan ahead to get the most of your trip. We had lunch and drinks at Luau Larry's. It was so much fun!

We made several trips to Santa Monica and ate at the Independence. http://www.independencetavern.com/#!projects/project-9.html

This is a great place to eat and people watch - the food and drinks are excellent. The parmesan truffle fries are to die for and I also recommend the white fish toast.

Shelly is a sweetheart and worked with me on our very late reservation. I appreciate her friendliness!

I would absolutely recommend this property to my friends and I would stay here again!

The condo was nice and in a good location. The downstairs tenant was rude and hard to deal with.

  • 3 of 5

The landlord was a bit overbearing mainly due to issues with parking my large F250 in the small area we were provided. Location and cleanliness was great! I think everything would have been smooth had parking not been an issue for the downstairs tenant.

Owner's Response: What a shame that you would feel called to write a negative review like this. I am so sorry I could not accommodate the parking of both of your F250 trucks. The ad clearly states there is tandem parking for 2 CARS. However, you arrived with not one, but TWO F 250 trucks and a Van.(3 vehicles) Parking is challenging in LA especially by the beach. I merely asked you to park one of those trucks on the street when I saw that you had parked in front of the neighbors garage - thus blocking it. I try not to upset the neighbors - this is the main reason that VRBO and AirB&B is being shut down all over the world. Some travelers have no regard for the locals and so everyone suffers. I am able to accommodate 2 standard size cars. Had I known you had 2 extra large construction trucks and a van to park, I would have warned you and/or dissuaded from staying here. Thank you for sharing your feedback and for leaving the apt. tidy upon departure. Wishing you smooth travels in your future. Light ahead:-)

Lots of space. Very clean. Excelecnt Kitchen. Great location for beach and L.A. attractions

  • 4 of 5

We like the Playa del Rey area because it is not crowded and still has restaurants and great beach and walking. The apartment is spacious and well maintained. Lots of room for the two of us and could work well for 4. The place is bright and airy. The balcony lets you enjoy the fresh sea breezes. The kitchen is well supplied for preparing meals and storing leftovers in the big fridge. The only drawback is the airplane noise if you have the windows open and watch TV. The bedrooms are on the north side of the house so the planes do not interfere with sleeping. We will certainly want to stay here again if it is available on our future visits to LA.

Owner's Response: Hi Thank you for your review. Yes, I know if you are not used to airplanes - its like NY with taxi horns. But luckily I do have the sound proof windows that blocks out the noise. Personally, I like to watch them take off over the ocean and imagine where they are going and what adventures lie ahead. :-) Lorelei

Fantastic getaway that felt like home

  • 5 of 5

We couldn't have been happier with our stay at Mermaid Manor. Shelly was awesome and made us feel at home from day 1. She is very knowledgeable on the area and provided many great recommendations. The best feature of this property is it's proximity to the beach and the fantastic ocean breezes that met us each day. The accommodations were very comfortable and everything we could ask for was provided. We will definitely be back again the next time we visit Los Angeles.

Absolutely wonderful!!!

What a wonderful apt, community, and host!!

We had a great trip to Playa Del Rey. This apt was so cute and comfy. Everything we needed was there. I can't say enough about the location. So close to the beach. We were able to easily walk to the beach for swimming, volleyball, or sunsets. We even rented bikes and rode to Venice Beach and Santa Monica Pier. There were plenty of restaurants and coffee shops in the neighborhood to keep us happy. Plus the big city (LA), and airport were close enough for easy access, but we felt like we were in a small town. Shelly was amazing! Very helpful and accommodating. She answered all our questions, always had a smile for us, and even gave us beach chairs and an umbrella for the beach. We would absolutely love to come back someday! And highly recommend. Quite a California jewel we found! Thanks Shelly!!

Hidden gem at a great price!

  • 5 of 5

Great location paired with wonderful property management. Shelly is a welcoming hostess with vast knowledge of SoCal fun. The clean, well-kept property is conveniently located for beach hopping or exploring L.A. We came with our family of five and had a great time. The property is bargain priced for the neighborhood and within walking distance to a nice beach area and just a block or two from the bike trail. I am sharing the listing with friends, and we will be back! Thanks for another great stay!
