About the property

Thoughtfully Furnished 1 Bedroom with Peaceful Backyard

Whether you're looking for a quiet vacation cottage or a place to relax after a long day of walking the convention center floor, you'll love the convenience and quiet comfort of our guest cottage. The one bedroom, one bath residence has been renovated with a mix of reclaimed wood details, modern furnishings and plenty of attention to making sure your stay is awesome!

Outside, you'll enjoy sipping a drink or grilling your dinner on the inviting backyard patio. Inside, you'll find everything you need to be right at home. From free wireless internet, to soft sheets, a full length mirror, ironing board, filtered water, cooking utensils, microwave, original wall art and a spotless bathroom with comfy towels, your home away from home will have the little luxuries that make travel easier.

The couch folds down into an extra bed if necessary. We supply comfy extra bedding (sheets, mattress cover and blanket) as well.

The property is quiet, private and landscaped with a colorful mix of orange trees and flowering plants. Because of its close proximity to the San Diego Bay, the temperatures stay relatively mild year round. Don't worry though, if the temperatures warm up, you'll sleep in air conditioned comfort if you desire.

If you're in town for the convention center, a ballgame at Petco Park, an event at Qualcomm Stadium, business in downtown or a visit to the local malls or university, you'll especially appreciate the fact that the Trolley is located an easy two blocks away. Just hop on board and you'll be at the Convention Center in ballpark in one quick stop.

There's plenty of street parking out front. To make things even easier for nearby trips to the Gaslamp, Balboa Park or Zoo, you'll have a couple of free bicycles available for you to roam around on. Zoom! Zoom!

John is the author of the guide book Seven Days in San Diego and an excellent resource for all of your travel plans.

About Jessie Denton

I've been a San Diego based photographer for the past 20 years. I'm also a regular hiker, runner and adventurer who's familiar with every nook and cranny of San Diego and its outskirts. After helping so many of my guests create itineraries for their visits here, I decided to write a book, Seven Days in San Diego, that lays out seven days worth of things to do and places to visit - all accompanied by plenty of beautiful photos.

Why Jessie Denton chose San Diego

The Sherman Heights neighborhood where my property is located is the last affordable neighborhood immediately adjacent to downtown. It's perfectly situated near the Trolley, the East Village, Golden Hill, Balboa Park etc. The Coronado Bridge is visible outside my window. It's also a historic district where the distinctive turn-of-the-20th Century Craftsman style homes are being meticulously restored. It's a perfect mix of urban convenience with residential quiet and style.

What makes this apartment unique

Upon purchasing the house, I've extensively remodeled it inside and out. Both inside outside combines modern styling with the historic Craftsman house. The end result is a environment that's stylish but comfortable. I once had an architecturally savvy family from Sweden stay with me. They said that the mix of modern and hand-wrought elements made them feel like they were right at home. That's what I like to hear!

Waling Distance to Gaslamp Quarter and Petco Park!

  • 5 of 5

Loved this little cottage! And, we walked to the downtown area for a day of activity!

Please know that if you arrive late, you are in a neighborhood with limited parking. I found a spot, and left my car there, only to retrieve it Monday morning with a school zone parking ticket on it. Never saw that at midnight or after when I parked!

As well, be advised that for some, walking from the cottage to the downtown may be disconcerting, since it is apparent that services for those who are homeless are offered in this area around where I-5 cuts through the Sherman Heights community. I work for an outreach ministry, so I did not mind at all, in fact found it eye-opening as I see the plight in other cities, too. But for some, I am aware of the fear and uncertainty. I will say this--we had zero negative interactions with the street folk while in San Diego. Zero. And we saw many!

Great spot!

Perfect house, perfect location

  • 5 of 5

This home was exactly what the website showed. We had no surprises, and enjoyed every minute of our time there. We were super close to downtown, the zoo, and the beach. We will definitely stay here again when we come back!

Artist's Cottage

  • 2 of 5

This property is very close to transit and convenient to get to the downtown area. The only downside is. it is very close to a large amount of homeless people. They gather near the Walmart which is about two blocks away.

The furniture is not comfortable at all. The couch and chair are very hard and the kitchen table chairs are very cheap. This is very unfortunate as the living space is the perfect size.

The other complaint we have is the area carpets are getting very dirty and need to be replaced or cleaned thoroughly.

This property could be much better if some care was taken with it.

It is also very handy to have bikes included, we biked all over the city, to the Island, via the ferry, to Balboa Park.

Owner's Response: This is one of those reviews that leaves our heads scratching. First, there are homeless and many other people nearby as we are close to the downtown area. They do not come into the neighborhood however which is a low traffic, fairly quiet zone. The price one pays for proximity to everything is that you are close to everything. As far as the dirty carpets, they are cleaned regularly. They're in good shape, don't show signs of wear and look clean. Please, if you intend to eat off of our carpets, don't book here as you will be disappointed! Cheap chairs? Hard sofa? Granted, they're not luxury but they're nice and functional. We don't promise the Ritz-Carlton here, just a welcoming, nicely designed, clean place. We've had guests stay for a week or more and then come back on their next visit. One person's uncomfortable is another's "just right." We clean the space from top to bottom after every guest, repairs are made immediately and the landscaping is maintained regularly. Over the course of the three years that we've offered this home for rent, we've had over 100 happy guests come and go. We hope you'll join us too!

nice quiet place

  • 4 of 5

We (2 of us) stayed here for a week. It's a cute place in the back of the house, nice living area, Bedroom and Bathroom, nice windows, fruit trees in the back, Double bed and futon /like sofa bed. No TV but we don't watch it.

Nicely decorated, could use more storage space for travelers. I just put my suitcase on the floor for the week. area is a bit different, diverse but we felt very safe. Parking can be a challenge, if you come in later you need to search , but we were never to far away. Had a few problems but they were addressed by owner in a reasonable time. Its close by a lot of interests...a cheap uber ride away if no car... I would stay here again.

Noisy

  • 2 of 5

Clean and comfortable, but very noisy from the water pipes. The guest home is connected with the front house's water. John, the owner, wasn't living there when we were there. When the tenants in the front house had a shower or used the water we could hear it very loud, especially in the bedroom. The water would be activated at any time of the day or night. It could go on for a long time and it was loud. Perhaps the people in the front house do shift work. I usually sleep well but I was woken in the night. However, my husband is a light sleeper. My first question to the owner, on December 9th, was “My husband is a light sleeper. Is the bedroom quiet?”. He answered: “yes it's a quiet bedroom/space and the neighborhood as well.”

The first night we laid down to sleep I heard the water going, a helicopter over the house, which started dogs barking. Also police car and fire engine sirens, and a ‘booming’ like sound from the sea front area; so there could be plenty of area noise at night, but the water was the worst. Also, the walls were quite thin so sometimes we could hear people talking in the front house during the day.

Lockbox: We recommend carrying a torch as the street lighting was low (February). We couldn't read the numbers without it. The owners instructions were detailed but not clear enough for us. These lock boxes aren't often used in Scotland. It took a few minutes to realise the numbers roll round. The instructions then say 'pull down a black leaver and open the door' (paraphrasing). Later, we realised the 'door' is the black area outside the silver number area. We don't have a US phone so we couldn't call the owner. Fortunately a helpful neighbour happened to come out of his house, otherwise we would have been stuck on the street with our luggage in what appeared to be a rough area for who knows how long. We were very tired after a long flight from Scotland and needed some rest.

We feel we need to make these comments to alert future weary travellers.

Next time in San Diego, I'll stay here again!

  • 5 of 5

From the beginning the owner was very prompt with responses. We arrived on January 14th, and were very pleased with the home we found waiting for us. This is the first time my friend and I used VRBO, so we were a little nervous. After using it, I don't think I could ever stay at a hotel again. The unit was very clean, comfortable, and decorated very cute. There was an orange tree in the backyard! The surrounding area didn't look to be the most kept-up neighborhood, but when the lovely wooden gate closed, it became our own little oasis. Next time I visit San Diego, I will definitely check the availability of this adorable, well-kept unit. Thanks so much John for an amazing stay!
