About the property

Secluded, Romantic, Family Friendly And Cozy, Last House In The Valley.

Enjoy the privacy of the outdoors and be close to La Crosse for convenience!

Here you can 'get away' from the world and enjoy the cozy and secluded comfort of the country. This is the last house in the valley and offers a serene view of the coulee. Deer and turkey will find their way to the field below the house and you will have the perfect sitting area to watch them feed and play.

In the winter, pack your cold weather wear and go for a walk along the creek or up the logging trail for a view of the coulee below. Bring your snowshoes for a winter walk. Or if you prefer, go sledding on the hill in front of the house. (sleds provided). What ever you choose to do, even if you stay indoors, you will enjoy the serenity of the valley.

If you like to ski, we are located just a few minutes from Mt. La Crosse.

If you are snowmobilers, the state trail is located less than a mile from the house and you can drive your snowmobile to the trail or drive your trailer to the trail, park and hop on from there.

In warmer weather, you can enjoy walks along the creek looking for fish and beavers or take a walk up the logging trail and see if you can spot a deer or other wildlife. Pack a picnic lunch and sit down by the creek and enjoy the sounds of water flowing over the rocks and the other sounds of nature.

At night, sit around the fire pit to relax and enjoy the outdoors.

If you want to venture out, La Crosse, Coon Valley, Westby and Viroqua are just a few miles away and offer various fun activities, dining and unique shopping. Or if you are looking for a drive and shopping through Amish country you are close to that as well.

Historic downtown La Crosse also offers a wide array of dining venues, theatre, live music, art galleries, shopping and bars.

Our home is nicely located close to the city whether you’re coming for a getaway, to meet family and friends, or to enjoy one of the local festivals such as Applefest, Riverfest, Oktoberfest, Irishfest, the Beer, Wine and Cheese festival, The state Track and Field competition, or to visit Family and Friends at UW-La Crosse, Viterbo College, or Western Wisconsin Technical College, we are just a short drive into town.

We are excited to announce that we added a new Bedroom and a good sized beautiful new bathroom in the lower level. The total for our home is now 5 Bedrooms with 2 King and 3 queen beds, and also, a queen size pull out sofa bed in the lower level. There are three bathrooms, one in the master bedroom and also one on the upper level and the third bathroom, a spacious new addition, is located on the lower level.

About Joan and Jerry

Joan and Jerry are local to the area and recently purchased the house and 10 acres with is attached to the family's original 100 acres of land. The property is amazing...you will be drawn to look out the windows at the view! Being new owners...we are committed to making this a gem of a destination! We personally take each stay seriously and our goal is to make it the best experience possible for you.

Joan and Jerry purchased this chateau / country house in 2013

Why Joan and Jerry chose Stoddard

This property is located on Joan's original family homestead. Joan's great, great grandparents came to Wisconsin from Germany and moved into Chipmunk Coulee in the late 1800's. Her Great Grandparents farmed this land and lived in the coulee, raising 7 sons. The historic hay barn that is located next to the house was built by her great grandfather and a neighbor in the early 1900's. The 10 acres of property was originally part of the family land and we are happy it can stay in the family! This land has been in the family for years and has provided us all with a lifetime of memories! We look forward to sharing the magic of Chipmunk Coulee with you!

What makes this chateau / country house unique

What is unique is that our last name is Unser, which in German means 'our'. We hope you enjoy your stay at Unser Haus!

Very nice property, quiet location

  • 5 of 5

The good: Secluded location, very quiet, but still less than 15 minutes from La Crosse, quite roomy, beautiful valley with plenty of outdoor space, very well maintained, linens and towels included!

The bad: Not really bad, but queen or king beds in 5 bedrooms, will need to use couches or bring air mattresses if you don't want to double up on beds, kitchen/dining area is fine for smaller groups, but tight for larger groups. Cable TV quality was acceptable at best.

The details:

We had a very nice stay for a guy's weekend away. Met Joan and Jerry upon check-in, very nice folks, showed us around and made us feel welcome. The property is probably less than 5 minutes off the highway nestled in a beautiful valley. Very large property that you can walk around.

The house itself is quite spacious. Main level has fully stocked (cooking utensils and the like) kitchen/dining area, smaller living room with smaller TV, two bedrooms and full bath. Lower level has larger living room with good size TV, ample space for 8 to sit for movies or to watch the game, three bedrooms, and full bath. I found my bed to be quite comfortable. We had a couple guys sleeping on couches which were fine for their night of rest.

We watched some football on Saturday and found that the cable TV quality is only basic, not HD. Somewhat disappointing, but not a deal breaker. There was a connected DVD player so we were able to watch movies also.

We varied between 6 and 11 guys between the nights we were there. When we had the full crew, the kitchen and dining room area were quite crowded. There is ample seating for about 9 in the dining room area. Just keep that in mind if you have a large group of 10+.

We really did enjoy the stay and hope that we can visit again in future years!

Absolutely Gorgeous Setting and House

  • 5 of 5

I spent a long weekend here with my sisters for our annual "sisters getaway," and couldn't have asked for a more beautiful home in a gorgeous, extremely peaceful and quiet setting with fantastic views all around. The house itself was very tastefully decorated and when you stepped outside, you could only hear silence and maybe once in a while, hear the flowing creek on the property with such beautifully, clear water. Everything you could possible need or want is in this beautiful home is furnished. The beds were extremely comfortable and the family room on the lower level was a great place to watch movies in the evening. I just loved sitting outside in the early morning on the upper level small balcony waiting for the first sunlight to appear. If you enjoy solitude and viewing God's beautiful creation, this place is for you!

During the major holidays, Memorial Day, Labor Day, Christmas, New Years, Easter, 4th of July, we require a 3 nights stay (usually being Friday through Monday). This allows for us to have time with our own family.

We have had several large gatherings at our home/property. If you are planning a large gathering or special event at the house, there will be an additional fee. We must be notified about the gathering at the time of booking, and also need to know the number of people that will be attending. Also, depending on the size of the group and due to the house having a septic system, we may ask you to rent a porta-potty for your event.

Please feel free to contact us if you are interested in staying only one night during the week!

If you cancel your reservation 30 days before arrival, you will be credited the entire amount minus processing fees.
