About Sally Melville

The family has owned this cabin since 1964, we gave it a complete makeover in 2013.

Sally Melville purchased this cabin in 1964

Why Sally Melville chose Russian River

Jim Melville won at Keno in 1964. He bought this double lot on the river & built the cabin with the winnings. It was completely remodeled in 2013 to update it. We kept the fireplace & refinished as much mid-century furniture as we could to match the 'Groovy' butterfly roof. We all agree with Jim that this area is as peaceful & groovy as it gets

What makes this cabin unique

Family fun has been happening here for more then 50 years. We sincerely hope it will continue for the next 500. Please email us with any questions about the cabin.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We had such a great time at the Redwood Butterfly cabin. We spent the days lounging in the sun on the little island and frolicking in the water and out on the boats. It was a blast. At night, the teens built a fire down at the fire pit and roasted marshmallows while I basked quietly on the deck and in front of the cozy fireplace. The cabin was perfect--kitchen very functional and we enjoyed eating every day out on the deck. Even though the cabin isn't large, it's very open and airy and has beautiful tall exposed wood ceilings. The decor is very pretty and it was comfortable to hang out there. The place is entirely private and the view is lovely.

Easy to find, owner was very responsive and we enjoyed the open concept kitchen & living room. We especially loved the updated kitchen and bathroom.

Perfect setting for relaxation

  • 4 of 5

This river view is wonderful and the house has everything you could need. Decor is mid-century modern with the fireplace being the perfect centerpiece!

The river access IS season, so check ahead.

For the price, not having river access on the property was a huge disappointment.

  • 1 of 5

I booked this house for my family and I to stay at over Spring Break. I booked this house specifically to bring our 2 dogs to be able to play in the water and have a relaxing vacation. I was very disappointed when we arrived because the grounds were not well maintained. There was brush everywhere, there was allot of debris from the water being really high and we were unable to really enjoy outside fires or anything because of all of the brush and mud.

Then we saw that there is absolutely no way to get to the river because there was a 15 foot drop from the back of the house down to the water. We then drove 1/4 of a mile down to the bridge to take our dogs and play in the water, but the current was so strong, we could not go in the water at all.

They also state they have a canoe and you can't use anyway, no access and current is way to strong.

The house is clean, but pretty small. The only saving grace was the beach that was about a 15 minute drive that we were able to spend some time at and enjoy. We ended up leaving 2 days early, just because after 2 days at the beach, there wasn't really anything we else we could do with no access to the river and the strong current at the bridge.

I tried to work with Sally and she decided not to refund any of the money for the 2 days we left early. She stated that you need to read the website and know that the river access is seasonal. Just an FYI, I would ask specific questions before I book this house.

Owner's Response: Joe, I am sorry we had just finished up with a record amount of rains on a seasonal river before you arrived. That being said I have clearly posted that the river access from our cabin is constructed seasonally when the water flow becomes reasonable and safe. As you clearly state in your review the river flow was not at all reasonable and safe. What you would have me do to control this variable is curious. Also when we rent the cabin and the tenant leaves 2 days early we have no chance to advertise and re rent the days you have left vacant. The contract you signed says no refund will be given for a last minute change in plans on your part. My reviews prior to this show other renters who have had a grand time in the rain, winter cold ect. The choice to leave early was yours.

Awesome house with beautiful view

  • 5 of 5

The Butterfly Cabin was just what we were hoping for. House is newly renovated, clean, and very well equipped. The view of the river was amazing, just wish we could have accessed the water, but not possible in wintertime. We had a great stay, and the location is perfect, best of the Russian River valley within an easy drive, and nice walks in the area. The only disappointment was that we found out when we arrived that we couldn't use wood in the fireplace, only duraflame logs, which we didn't want to use (and hadn't brought with us anyway), so we didn't get to use the fireplace as we had hoped. Overall, big thumbs up though. Thanks Sally for a great experience and for being so easy to reach with our questions!

We spent Christmas here and had a wonderful time. The house had everything we could possibly need and very comfortable beds. Was always nice to wake up to the view and a cup of coffee. I recommend this place. We will have to come back again. Thanks Sally!

Great week end on the river!

  • 4 of 5

Monte Rio is a small, peaceful community and redwood butterfly is a very comfortable cabin nestled in the redwood trees long the Russian river. Lots of activities to do during the day before coming back to the cabin to enjoy a Bbq, s'mores by the fire pit or simply relax on the deck. The modern kitchen is well equipped, bathroom is great and the bedrooms are very comfy. A top pick in the area!
