About John and Jani Meuchel

John and I grew up in the beautiful Bitterroot Valley and it will be our home forever. The saying, 'there's no place like home' is so true and we feel so blessed to live in such an amazing area.

John and Jani Meuchel purchased this house in 1946

Why John and Jani Meuchel chose Bitterroot Valley

My dad moved to this property as a boy when the neighbors in town complained of 'too many hound dogs'. He purchased the ranch from his parents in 1965 and my grandmother continued to live in this house for many years. We thought that many guests would enjoy the beautiful scenery and tranquility of the ranch that I was blessed to enjoy as a child.

What makes this house unique

This home was built in 1939 and is located on a working ranch and the views from the large living room windows are incredible. You'll enjoy many of the original features of this home. One of the many attractions is the fishing access right out the front door.

Charming!

  • 5 of 5

Enjoyed a three night stay here with our family of four. Such a peaceful and relaxing place to unwind! House is beautifully maintained and decorated and has all the amenities needed for a great stay. The gazebo overlooking the Bitterroot river was just perfect for enjoying that morning cup of coffee! Our family took an inner tube float down the river which ended just below the house, so quiet and relaxing! It was a pleasure meeting John and Jani and appreciate the time they took to take us out for a quad ride, such fun ! Will definitely be on our list of stays when we return for another visit. Thank you !! :)

Homey Stay in Beautiful Montana

  • 5 of 5

Our stay in Hamilton, MT for a family reunion was made easier and much more pleasant by staying at Grandma's House on the Bitterroot River. The location of the home is perfect to travel to any place in the Bitterroot Valley. The house was perfect for four adults, a one year old and a rambunctious 3 1/2 year old! Our hosts, Jani and John, were wonderful and very accommodating! We will definitely stay here again in the future!

Comfortable home on the Bitterroot River

  • 5 of 5

We came to Hamilton and stayed at this great house overlooking on one side, the river, and on the other horse pastures that usually had beautiful and friendly horses.

The night we arrived , Jani invited us to a cookout on their ranch that they hold every year to raise money for local schools

Everyone was friendly and very generous in their bidding for auctioned items.

This started our vacation on a good foot. We felt like part of the community.

There were 3 of us staying at "Grandmas house". The house is very comfortable and the beds were wonderful. It had everything we needed for our stay. Easy to find and away from noise and traffic. Wildlife can be see down Old Darby Road or along river.

We definitely will come again!

Thank you Jani and John for the opportunity to stay on Old Darby Road again.

It brought back many wonderful memories and we made even a few more on this trip.

Perfect country house, Jaw-droppingly beautiful surroundings

  • 5 of 5

My father, two brothers, and I visited Montana for the first time and stayed three nights near the beautiful Bitterroot River. Jani and John were fantastic hosts, and happily shared local knowledge and access to the thousands of pristine acreage on their family ranch. We hiked up the large hill behind the house, walked along and explored the river which is in your backyard, grilled out while we watched the sun set over the snow covered mountains, and watched the stars appear as we sat next to the camp fire. It is only an hour away from Missoula, and about 1.5 hours away from white water rafting on the Lochsa River (in nearby Idaho, we used Lewis and Clark Adventure Rafting). We would love to return to this house and surrounding landscape which exceeded our very high expectations!

Perfect getaway

  • 5 of 5

Had several days at this perfect riverside house with family. Perfect location for fishing the bitterroot and surrounding smaller waters and placed conveniently between Hamilton and Darby where you can find great fly shops, restauarants, breweries and groicery stores . Enjoyed morning coffee at the gazebo overlooking the river and ended the day with a camp fire with the ranch mountains as our backdrop. The views on your walk up old darby road are some of the best in the valley. Add to all this that the owners are great with pre-trip communication and we got a chance to meet John and he was even more generous with his time and advice in person . Wonderful people and a wonderful property. We will be back . Thanks again John and Jani
