Disappointed in Westerly

  • 1 of 5

I am surprised by the previous reviews for this property that mention how clean it is because the issues I have suggest long term neglect in the areas of cleaning and maintenance. We were charged a cleaning fee, a sufficient amount to keep the small cottage clean and well maintained between rentals. I’ve sent the owner pictures to support my complaints.

On arrival everything looked tidy and clean but that first impression did not last long. Opening the kitchen draws and cabinets I found mouse poop. It wasn’t just in the draws and cabinets, it was actually on eating and cooking utensils and oven mitts. Mice also pee where they poop but you can’t see that. The bottom draw has a mousetrap in it so someone knows there are mice. This is a pet friendly rental so if you have allergies stay away because there is dust and pet hair everywhere, including the couch, armchair and bed. The ceiling light fixtures have dead bugs in them. The bathroom vent fan as well as the fans in the bedrooms is dirty – not just a little dusty but dirty, as are the radiators. Radiators are located under the windows and when you turn on the air conditioners in those windows it circulates the dust and pet hair collected in and around the radiators. The toilet tank has a long crack down the front, an accident waiting to happen. The couch and armchair in the living room are past their prime and the seats of two wooden rush chairs are literally falling apart. The firewood mentioned in the reservation email is actually a woodpile of large un-split pieces not suitable for the fire pit provided. The woodpile is located at the back of the property and is actually unsafe to approach because the area is littered with scrap lumber and brush piles.

We are not hard to please and don’t expect luxury accommodations but we do expect a rental like this to be clean and vermin free.

Nice little cottage!

  • 3 of 5

There were many really great things about this place, and a few not so good. It's only a mile from the ocean, and maybe 2 miles from the beach that they have a pass for. Apparently most folks only want a/c, so my request for screens for the other windows was met with some resistance, but Cheryl and Fausto came through with flying colors and found screens for the windows that didn't have a/c units in them - much appreciated! They also left me some fans, which worked really well. If I had come at the height of the summer season, I would definitely have needed the a/c though and there are three! There is every convenience needed here - plenty of bath towels, sheets, silverware, glasses, plates, etc. plus a toaster, full size coffeemaker, microwave, etc., plus a washer and dryer in the basement! It's a pretty quiet neighborhood, allowing open windows at night without traffic noise. Yay! Wild bunnies and turkeys visited daily. :-) Pretty much the only negatives I can relate is #1 the size of the bathroom! Oh dear! It's only about 4' square, then subtract a little vanity, radiator, toilet, and a teeny shower (if you bend over to get something you hit your head on the faucet!); not even a lip at the top of the shower to put little travel size shampoo bottles. #2 would be the queen size bed - which was fairly comfortable, but it was about 3 1/2 feet off the floor (I had to give a little hop to get on LOL), and it made loud odd creaking noises (loose frame?) even just rolling over at night. I did try the bunk beds in the other room but they had plastic on them (anticipating kids wetting the bed perhaps?), and were pretty hard and uncomfortable. I opted for the creaks. It says it sleeps 6, but I would not want 5 other people in this cottage with me-- it's small - and the extra 2 people would be sleeping on an air mattress in the living room. Oh, the TV -- HUGE beautiful television with a DVR player. Only local channels, but enough for me to watch the news and a couple of other shows. Suggestion: there should be a "guide" as to which channels not to bother trying because out of hundreds and hundreds of channels, only about 30 come in. A big waste of time looking for something to watch, only to have it tell me I'm not subscribed to that channel. Bring your own favorite DVDs (there are a couple there). LOVED watching Game of Thrones on the big screen!!!!!!

Pleasant and private cottage

  • 5 of 5

This was my third visit to this cottage. My daughter and I love it - and so does our dog! There are several beaches nearby and I have never had a problem taking my dog to any of them, but I would always take her early in the morning or later in the afternoon. There are lots of people out walking their dogs at those times.

I'll be back next summer!

Great location, quiet and clean.

  • 4 of 5

This cottage was perfectly situated for our family attending a wedding at the Weekapaug Inn. It was clean and comfortable. The kitchen could use a few new pans, but we managed to get breakfast cooked with what they had. We would definitely stay here again.
