About the property

3 bedroom vacation home built for a Hawaiian Princess

STMP 2014-0001. TA-001-935-7696-01. Haleakala Princess Estate is a very unique vacation rental in Upcountry Maui. This home was designed for Abigail Kapiolani Kawananakoa and has been lovingly restored by the current owner. Careful attention has been paid to every detail, from the gardens to the interior and exterior of both the Main House and the Guest Cottage. Haleakala Princess Estate is in the small rural town of Kula. Kula can be considered the 'heart' of Upcountry. The climate here is cooler, with mists swirling in the valleys and groves of eucalyptus sheltering pastures full of cattle. Kula is also the habitat of the exotic Protea flowers and several farms grow acres of the many different varieties that are shipped all over the world. Kula onions are said to be among the sweetest in the world. As you drive through Kula, you'll see pasture land with cows, horses, goats or sheep, farm land with flowers, vegetables, lavender, or fruits.

The Tedeschi Winery in Ulupalukua is Hawaii's only vineyard. Stop and taste the Tedeschi products at the historic little stone tasting room, which was once a jail. The immaculate grounds, landscaped with 100-year-old trees, are a great place for a loaf of bread, a bottle of wine and a designated driver! But the crowning jewel is the summit of 10,023 foot Haleakala. From here, the sunrise is like no place else on earth.

A return to Haleakala Princess is definitely in our future

  • 5 of 5

What can I say about Haleakala Princess without gushing?! This was truly the most wonderful place I have ever stayed and would (and have) recommend it to everyone.

We are a blended family and took the three girls (aged 13-22) and one boy (25) on our first family vacation together and this couldn't have been better. The view down the side of the mountain was truly spectacular and the sight of the two rainbows crossing into each other one morning will never be forgotten. We live on an island but I am originally from Wales, and the perfect blend of island and mountain views in one place is stunning and heart warming.

The! Fantastic modern décor inside the house with giant windows and sliding glass doors made particularly to enjoy the incredible view. We loved that the master bedroom was on the other side of the house on its own, which gave us a modicum of privacy from the kids...when they weren't using the favourited shower in the master bath...and the beds...well I cant speak for the kids' beds but the master bed; I had been suffering with an injured back for several months before our vacation and had been having trouble sleeping without pain. The master bed certainly assisted in the recovery of this pain....ahhhh such good nights' sleeps.

The kids very much loved sitting out at the fire pit or in the hot tub in the evenings and they most definitely bonded a little more chatting out there each night.

The owner has created a gated, peaceful oasis with such wonderful, enviable landscaping (definitely gave us some ideas on landscaping for our own property here in Cayman), we even found a very friendly chameleon, whom we christened Jorge :)

The location was ideal for us also; high up in the mountains so we had cool morning air and a great jumping off spot for our sightseeing; the road to Hana....the whole way around!, the Lahaina Luau, surfing in Kihei and of course Haleakala Crater.... where we (surprise to me!! :)) became engaged.

Cathy and Melody are an absolute joy to work with and could answer all of our questions and relieve any worries we had in trying to make this a great holiday for the kids to remember as their first all together, making suggestions along the way as well. They are a one-stop-shop making it all such an easy process; car rental, tour ideas and we can't leave out Mallory who even did some grocery shopping for us so that after a 12 hour journey we only needed to settle in and relax. Thank you so much ladies!!

Loved staying up-country

  • 5 of 5

We were extremely pleased with the accommodations at the Haleakala Princess.... loved staying up-country.... and will certainly return in the coming years, as my wife grew up in Pukalani /Kula and we often come to visit family.

The house was beautifully conceived and, as an architect, I truly appreciated the way it captured the sweeping views to the west [especially the sunsets]. The deck and grounds were stunning as well..... and the hot tub a nice treat in the cool evenings.

All in all, we did love our experience.... and would certainly recommend it to friends and family. You will see us again, I'm sure.....

A Maui experience with an amazing view!

  • 5 of 5

My extended family (4 grandparents, 2 parents and our 1 year old) stayed for 10 days at the Haleakala Princess. As the other reviewers mentioned, if there is one thing you'll remember about this property is the amazing view off the deck. Iao Valley, the north and south coast...equally breathtaking during the day and at night. The property was very clean and well kept up. It has some very interesting history and some information on the Hawaiian princess that used to live here.

This property is wonderful for families! The grounds are well kept and our daughter loved running around what seemed like at least an acre or two of grass, chasing the chickens, watching the birds and looking at the fish in the waterfall off the deck. Walking around the grounds you will find many citrus and avacado trees, which was a treat. A hot tub might not be the first thing you think of when you visit Maui, but staying 2500' above sea level it gets a little cooler at night (15C) can't beat sharing a midnight glass of wine and enjoying the stars in the hot-tub after a long at the beach.

You'll be very close to Haleakala national park, so if you want to try and catch the Sunrise on top of the world, you can sleep in an extra hour. I would recommend going during the day, its a great experience. You are 5 minutes from Kula Farm produce stand for fresh organic produce anytime, and supermakets in Kula and Pukalani. Maui wine is also worth checking out (~20min drive), and the nearby Lavender farm.

The property managers are very friendly and answered all our questions, checking in with us during our stay.

Some very minor negatives or suggestions:

-The wifi could use an upgrade. We had a very connected group (3 tablets, 3 phones) so the connection speed got a little slow when everyone was on. Honestly we should have just put the electronics away and enjoyed the surroundings more...but old habits die hard. If you are sane and only have one or two devices it should be fine.

-Its a bit of a walk to take out the garbage (150ft walk down stairs). Probably not an issue for most but if you have mobility issues or are elderly it might be a bit of a challenge.

-The coffee grinder is a fairly cheap unit. Took us a few tries of making basically colored water before we figured out how to get a good grind. It could use an upgrade. Hawaiian coffee is not to be missed!

Other than that I can't say we had anything but a wonderful time at this property. Would definitely come back!

Owner's Response: Aloha Cavan. So happy to hear that you enjoyed the property. It's a very special place. I have the coffee grinder on my shopping list, and will pick up a new one this weekend. We'd love to hear from you when you return to Maui. MAHALO!

It was amazing and beautiful!

  • 5 of 5

Thank you so much for your email and for your help in booking this property! It was amazing and beautiful and my family and I are trying to find another excuse to get to Maui!

The home was immaculate and private and we were so happy that we rented this! We were fortunate to be the only guests on site however on our next trip we will probably rent both the main house and the cottage. Everything was wonderful! We used the hot tub (after a long day out) and the firepit (for family smores time)and even used to bbq (to grill steaks). We even used the outdoor table on Saturday night when the weather was actually warm out. I loved that the grounds were so beautiful and well maintained! But we were all very impressed as to how immaculate the home was! We felt so honored to have stayed there!

We look forward to our next Maui trip and look forward to staying at this beautiful home again!

There are no words....

We stayed for a week in "up country" Maui at the Haleakala Princess.. The pictures do not do the house justice .. It is beyond beautiful , the view will take your breath away with the huge deck off the the back of the house overlooking Maui ...the house is well stocked with everything you need and is spotless and clean ... It is so quiet and peaceful and was just what was needed with my stressful job ... The only negative is the beds , I gave my two aunties the master and double room at the front of the house as they have recently had a battle with cancer and I took the twin room ... The beds are so uncomfortable ... Note to the owner , please go to Costco and buy the memory foam mattress toppers for your beds... This high end house should have "to die for beds" ... The "Westin"sleep experience as a memory at this beautiful place ...

Owner's Response: Aloha Jude. I'm so happy to hear you enjoyed this very special property. The view is almost too good to be true. I wish you would have called us about the beds while you where here. The beds are only a year old. One guest asked for the make/model so that he could get the same bed at home. But everybody is different, and some find a pillow top too soft, while others find a firm bed too hard so it's difficult to have mattresses that everyone will love. We would have been happy to get a topper for you. On future trips, please be sure to alert us if there is anything we can do to make your stay more enjoyable. We want all of our guests to go home with wonderful memories.

So many lovely details!

  • 5 of 5

I want to thank you. The house exceeded our expectations. So much little and nice details and the charm and functionality of the house impressed us.

The reply you gave us for our questions was very fast and efficient. We felt great there.

We were a group of 6 adults, most of us with a specific interest in Kitesurfing. So we drove everyday to Kahului or Hookipa beaches. But we also did sightseeing and went out for dinner. I personally loved to come back to the house at the end of the day and see the beautiful sunset from up there, drink a glass of wine, go into the hot tub or just relax by the house.

I found the weather great in the area, a nice change from the day at the beach under the sun.

We plan to come back in March 2016, but I guess people will only make up their mind something like 3 months before.

I would definitely recommend staying at the Haleakala Princess House.
