Overview

About the property

A 5 bedroom 1910's charmer in the heart of town!

Welcome! The Okra Inn is a renovated Camelback cottage in historic Mid City area on the Canal Street Car line. Enjoy a 10 minute walk to Bayou St John and City Park (home of New Orleans Museum of Art), and a 15 minute street car ride to the Historic New Orleans French Quarter. Around the corner from the famous Angelo Brocato’s and many other restaurant options. Blocks away from many other famous New Orleans restaurants, such as Mandina’s, Liuzza’s, and Katie’s. I also have tons of insider knowledge on exploring the City!

The house is great for groups, but I have neighbors who need to be respected. This house is best for groups who plan to do their partying away from the house.

About Lindsay Pick

I am a born and raised seventh generation New Orleanian, and am the co owner of Louisiana Lost Lands Environmental Tours, we provide educational kayak tours of Louisiana's vanishing wetlands primarily by kayak. Prior to owning The Okra Inn, I was the producer and writer for a PBS television series that focused on coastal land loss in Louisiana. I received a Masters in Urban and Regional Planning from the University of New Orleans program, where I focused on issues of flood protection and coastal restoration. I believe the survival of our communities is dependent upon public interest and involvement. Being a New Orleans native, I offer an extensive knowledge of the area, and I'm educated in southern charm.

Lindsay Pick purchased this house in 2010

Why Lindsay Pick chose Mid-City

I chose this house because I fell in love with it 7 years ago- the stain glass and crown molding are hard to beat. This beauty from the 1910's has abundant space, with two living rooms and two dinning rooms and two kitchens. It's a fantastic location in beautiful Mid City, convenient for the French Quarter, CBD, Uptown, City Park, Bayou St John, the Interstate and The Lake. And I'm located right next door and easily available for questions and advice on exploring the town.

What makes this house unique

New Orleans is a City for stoop sitting and chatting with neighbors and passerby's. One of my favorite recommendations is going around the corner to the seafood market and buying a few pounds of crawfish or shrimp and sitting on the porch with some beer. In the evening time they'll be plenty of folks on their way to the popular Venezia's and Angelo Brocato's down the street. It's a great way to people watch and even meet some locals. The New Orleans tradition is to do this in a laid back and respectful way-- the friendly neighbors do react to loud parties.

Incredibly charming property.

Great place for our extended family who gathered for a New Orleans wedding at the Degas House. We don't get to see each other often, so this was wonderful - way better than separate hotel rooms. The Mid City location is very convenient to all. Lindsay was very helpful and accommodating. My daughter and my sister both reported being gently rocked in a bed in one of the upstairs bedrooms and we wondered if anyone else has reported this in the past. If you appreciate historic architecture and charm with modern conveniences, this place is for you. If you are offended by shabby chic and need everything ultra modern, probably not the place for you. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay! Holly Kotiadis

couldn't ask for more in a vacation stay

Lindsay was a great communicator and a great hostess. Although we arrived a few hours early, she was happy to make arrangements with us to drop off luggage so that we could explore the city.

The property is really unique and beautiful. It is also the perfect distance from which to quickly get to Bourbon St/Superdome while also being far enough away to decompress from the madness.

Cant wait to get back there!

Great family space

  • 4 of 5

Location was perfect for our NOLA trip for Loyola's 2017 graduation. Lots of eateries nearby. Very friendly neighborhood with a good deal of foot traffic. Would have given 5 stars if the duplex had internal access between the two sides. Instead, entrance to each side was from the exterior doors only.

Great place for a group!

  • 5 of 5

We were a group of 5 moms and 6 daughters (elementary school ages) who were in town for the Lion King. We were unfamiliar with the exact location when we rented the home. The home is actually a duplex, which I realized after we rented, but it turned out to be okay. We just had to split the group for sleeping, but there was plenty of room on one side for us all to hang out before retiring for bed.

The street in front of the home is in bad shape, with many large potholes. We were able to park off the street in some parking spaces nearby. The house sits one block off of Canal street, with a new Walgreens in front. The Walgreens does not block the view of Canal Street, but it is well lit at night and provides a large parking lot that you can walk through to get to Canal Street and the street car. We were able to catch the street car at a very nearby location. Heading into the CBD, we were one of the first stops, so there were plenty of seats available when we took the street car to the Saenger Theater. On the way back, the street car was much more crowded, and we all had to stand, but it was a fun experience for all. It turns out that this mid-town location offers plenty of dining options within a short walking distance, so once back from the show, we did not have to Uber or take the street car anywhere (we had vehicles, but parking in NOLA is always a hassle.)

Lindsay was very helpful and was generally available by phone when we needed any information. There were no problems with the home, and she was gracious to give us dining suggestions and allowed us to put our luggage in the home before check in time so that it would be there after the performance when we got back.

I would definitely rent here again.

The Italian restaurant, Venezia, was very close and had really good pizza. We had to wait 2 hours to be seated, but they allowed us to go back to the house to wait and called us when our table was being readied.
