When you go to the beach what do you want to see? THE BEACH, on crystal clear Lake Superior.
Our cottage is located in the village of Au Train where life's a beach! Whether its summer, fall or winter, nature is always inviting with its seasonal changes. It truly is an 'out of city experience' for all seasons. There is nothing like a walk on the beach, a swim in crystal clear water, kayaking/canoeing and fishing til your heart's content, snowmobiling directly from cottage to trail, or just touring the area looking at the beautiful fall colors. Beautiful Lake Superior is the world's largest freshwater lake and it's just a hop, skip, and jump across the road! It is one of the most beautiful beaches in the Upper Peninsula.
Our Cottage IS THE ONLY COTTAGE IN THE VILLAGE WITH A VIEW OF LAKE SUPERIOR!
Enjoy the unique deck while gazing out onto the beautiful blue hues of Lake Superior and listening to the waves crashing against the shoreline. Imagine this moment! The cottage is set back in a private area off the road and adjoins the owner's property. Plenty of trees for a privacy buffer. The cottage is the only rental on the property! We have plenty of area for boats, trailers, campers, etc. We have 5 kayaks for guests inc. paddles and Cabela's life vests. If guests want to haul the kayaks across the street to the kayak launch, they are free to use. If guests would like us to haul up river, the cost is $20 per kayak, per day use. The cottage is located on the DNR trail so there are snowmobiles or ATV's on the trail, especially on the weekends. The cottage has all foam insulation which deadens the sound, however, if you are looking for someplace out in the country where there is absolutely no noise, then this is not the place for you. We live next door and the noise doesn't bother us. It is all in the view and the location close to the Lake Superior beach and the the Au Train River that is important to us.
In the winter, snowmobiling is directly out the front door. No need to trailer the machines. Ample parking for snowmobile trailers. Snowshoe or cross country ski down DNR trail #417 which runs adjacent to the property or across the sand dunes to experience Lake Superior's wild winter waves. Ice Climbing is also popular along the Pictured Rocks shoreline. We even have an Ice Fest weekend in February. About 20 miles away is a small community which hosts their famous 'Outhouse Races' the third week in February! Huge crowds come to watch home-made outhouses race down the streets of Trenary on a thick sheet of snow and ice.
Kayak/canoe launch on the Au Train River across the street with fishing pier and handicap boat launch within 200 ft. Kayak down the famous Au Train River or out into the fresh clear water of Lake Superior. Great winds for kite surfers too! Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore is a short 12 miles away which features the famous Pictured Rocks Boat Tours, Shipwreck Boat Tours, and hiking along Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore.
The UPSCALE cottage was just built in 2014 which features tongue and groove knotty pine vaulted ceiling in the living room/dining room and knotty pine hardwood flooring. Master BR features a hickory queen size platform bed with 6 drawers for storage and a closet. Second BR features one twin bunk bed and one full size bunk bed both made of solid pine and sturdy enough for adult use. Three drawers under twin bunk for storage. Bathroom consists of full sized washer & dryer and tub/shower combo. We even supply laundry detergent. Kitchen showcases new stainless steel range and a 6' counter for serving/eating meals. Some say the counter tops resemble birch trees. Plenty of cabinet space with Lake Superior rock drawer pulls on the cabinets. Refrig and built in microwave & dishwasher. Small appliances included too...slow cooker, coffee pots, etc. Table seats 4-6 and counter seats 2-4. Bright beachy theme displaying Lake Superior photos. Large gas grill is available with propane included.
Our landscaping is a work in progress as we have to work in between our guests schedules. Our guests have commented, "We feel like we were the first ones here." I take much pride in keeping the cottage very clean for our guests enjoyment and comfort. All you need to bring is your food, clothing, and a desire to have a great vacation.
Check out our new Facebook page...Superior South Shore Cottage. We love to read your comments. We do have a guest appreciation offer for guests who are visiting for the third time. Please call me for details.

About Michelle Doucette
My husband and I purchased the property in 2005 but it wasn't until 2013 & 2014 that we started to remodel the little one bedroom cabin. Well, it has now turned into a beautiful little cottage with an addition of two large bedrooms and a large bath. The only item left in the cabin was the pine flooring. All else was removed and rebuilt. We added 3 inches of spray foam to all walls for extra insulation for warmth and sound. In the spring of 2015 we hope to finish the landscaping. We built a boardwalk going into the cottage with stairs going down to the fire pit area.
Michelle Doucette purchased this Cottage in 2005
Why Michelle Doucette chose Au Train
My husband's family settled here many years ago from Quebec, Canada. In this small community you are either a relative or a one-time tourist who just couldn't leave. Make sure you look for the bridge over the Au Train River which is named after our family...'The Doucette Bridge'. It is even on most maps
What makes this Cottage unique
The Unique Benefits about this cottage is Location, Location, Location. It is sort of located in a triangle with Lake Superior across the the M-28 Hwy and Au Train River across the Forest Lake Rd...all no less than a 3 minute walk (check out the area map). Au Train River is famous for its canoe & kayak trips as it is a slow, shallow, sandy meandering river going out into Lake Superior. Au Train is located in the middle of Munising and Marquette in which both cities have Lake Superior shoreline recreational activities. Marquette was just named one of the top 25 travel destinations in the world! Munising boasts its Pictured Rocks Boat Tours which are like No Other! The last two summers we have seen a dramatic increase in tourists visiting the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, partly due to the exposure of our National Parks.

Loved our stay
We came to snowmobile and the location was perfect. The home was cozy and stocked with everything we needed. Thanks for your hospitality!
Wonderful! Jerry and Michelle are friendly, accomodating, and work hard to ensure an enjoyable stay.
Wonderful! Cabin is very clean and well stocked with everything you need. Michelle is fantastic to work with. Thanks for sharing your cabin with us, we had a great time!
Fabulous location and wonderful hospitality
Let me start by saying this cottage is exactly what a home rental is supposed to be. It's stocked with everything one needs to live, not just sleep, for any length of stay. Plenty of cooking supplies and pantry staples, in addition to starter coffee and laundry supplies, make this an easy place to settle right in. Extras like bottles of water, a Pictured Rocks book, candy basket and binder of information and maps were all little touches illustrating the Doucette's knowledge of hospitality.
Our family found this location to be perfect for our needs. Although M28 has very fast traffic, it was never a problem to cross the road to the almost empty beach. The kids were in heaven! Cross the road then cross the bridge to have hundreds of yards of flat beach and gently sloping shore all to yourself.
Munising was only 10-15 minutes away to the east and Marquette 40 minutes to the west - both of which have great grocery stores. So many things to do! Kayak the Au Train River, cruise the coastline of Pictured Rocks, hike the many and varied trails along the Lakeshore or hunt down the countless waterfalls in the area. Further afield, check out Presque Isle Park in Marquette and grab lunch or dinner at Donker's; Gawk at the sculptures of Lakenenland (walk instead of drive through -it's much cooler); drive to Seney National Wildlife Refuge for the Marshland drive and definitely stop at the Visitor's Center. Really, this list is endless and only limited by how much time you have and how far you want to drive. We used this location as the perfect home base for exploring as far away as the Porcupine Mountains and Houghton on a day trip and the entire Pictured Rocks Lakeshore area. The only limiting factor is the number of beds and single bathroom if you have a larger family. Our family of 5 did just fine and we cannot recommend this cottage highly enough.
Great place, great location, friendly and courteous owners
This was a great location for us. Munising was close, beach across the street, kayaking, Northwoods Resort was close for canoeing the Au Train, cycling, all kinds of things to do in the outdoors. It is close to the highway but you do not even hear the traffic. I would stay here again without doubt.
Clean and comfortable.
Very nice property. The cottage is clean and well stocked. While not directly on the water, it's just across the street from a very nice beach. We brought our own kayaks and there was plenty of room to park the trailer. There's very easy access to the AuTrain River and Lake Superior.
The grill works great and the kitchen has everything you need.
The bedrooms are adequate with average bedding.
The bathroom/laundry room is clean and spacious with a new washer and dryer. The only thing missing is a couple of towel bars to hang wet bath towels.
Overall this is a very comfortable U.P. Property about 10 miles west of Munising.
amazing. Super clean, beautiful view.
Great cottage with wonderful views. Perfectly positioned with big windows to see the lake. The hosts were fabulous and it's so very clean. I'd give it 4.5 stars if I could. The only drawback is that M28 is right there so for that reason it didn't meet the ideal quiet time in the UP I was hoping for with car and truck traffic zooming by. Otherwise it was fabulous and I highly recommend it.
Hiawatha National Forest encompasses the majority of Alger County with it's miles of hiking trails, tons of waterfalls, and the famous 'Pictured Rocks National LakeShore'. In the winter, Pictured Rocks is well-known for ice climbing along the shoreline.
