PERFECT LOCATION! Lake Superior View, AuTrain River (Kayak), Snowmobile Trail
When you go to the beach what do you want to see? THE BEACH, on crystal clear blue Lake Superior. Our cottage is located in the village of Au Train where life's a beach! Whether its summer, fall or winter, nature is always inviting with its seasonal changes. It truly is an "out of city experience" for all seasons. There is nothing like a walk on the beach, a swim in crystal clear water, kayaking/canoeing and fishing til your heart's content, snowmobiling directly from cottage to trail, or just touring the area looking at the beautiful fall colors. Beautiful Lake Superior is the world's largest freshwater lake and it's just a hop, skip, and jump across the road! It is one of the most beautiful beaches in the Upper Peninsula.
Our Cottage IS THE ONLY COTTAGE IN THE VILLAGE WITH A VIEW OF LAKE SUPERIOR!
Enjoy the unique deck while gazing out onto the beautiful blue hues of Lake Superior and listening to the waves crashing against the shoreline. Imagine this moment! The cottage is set back in a private area off the road and adjoins the owner's property. Plenty of trees for a privacy buffer. The cottage is the only rental on the property, which makes for a private vacation experience. The cottage grounds has plenty of space for boats, snowmobile trailers, etc. The cottage is located on the DNR trail so there are snowmobiles or ATV's on the trail, especially on the weekends. The cottage has all foam insulation which deadens the sound, however, if you are looking for someplace out in the country where there is absolutely no noise, then this is not the place for you. We live next door and the noise doesn't bother us. It is all in the view and the location close to the Lake Superior beach and the the Au Train River that is important to us.
In the winter, snowmobiling is directly out the front door. No need to trailer the machines. Ample parking for snowmobile trailers. Snowshoe or cross country ski down DNR trail #418 which runs adjacent to the property or across the sand dunes to experience Lake Superior's wild winter waves. Ice Climbing is also popular along the Pictured Rocks shoreline. We even have an Ice Fest weekend in February. About 20 miles away is a small community which hosts their famous 'Outhouse Races' the third week in February! Huge crowds come to watch home-made outhouses race down the streets of Trenary on a thick sheet of snow and ice.
Kayak/canoe launch on the Au Train River across the street with fishing pier and handicap boat launch within 200 ft. Kayak down the famous Au Train River or out into the fresh clear water of Lake Superior. Great winds for kite surfers too! Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore is a short 12 miles away which features the famous Pictured Rocks Boat Tours, Shipwreck Boat Tours, and hiking along Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore.
The UPSCALE cottage was just built in 2014 which features tongue and groove knotty pine vaulted ceiling in the living room/dining room and knotty pine hardwood flooring. Master BR features a hickory queen size platform bed with 6 drawers for storage and a closet. Second BR features one twin bunk bed and one full size bunk bed both made of solid pine and sturdy enough for adult use. Three drawers under twin bunk for storage. Bathroom consists of full sized washer & dryer and tub/shower combo. We even supply laundry detergent. Kitchen showcases new stainless steel range and a 6' counter for serving/eating meals. Some say the counter tops resemble birch trees. Plenty of cabinet space with Lake Superior rock drawer pulls on the cabinets. Refrig and built in microwave & dishwasher. Small appliances included too...slow cooker, Keurig, coffee pots, etc. Table seats 4-6 and counter seats 2-4. Bright beachy theme displaying Lake Superior photos. Large gas grill is available with propane included. We even provide wood for the fire pit! Our landscaping is a work in progress as we have to work in between our guests schedules. Our guests have commented, "We feel like we were the first ones here." I take much pride in keeping the cottage very clean for our guests enjoyment and comfort. All you need to bring is your food, clothing, and a desire to have a great vacation.

This was a perfect place for my family's stay. Plenty of beds, a full kitchen with everything you need, and close proximity to the sites we wanted to see! The place was clean and Michelle was wonderful!
A very nice location, ideal for two adults. Compact space, well decorated, state of the art appliances.Short walk to local grocery and restaurant. Beautiful beach on Lake Superior a short walk from back yard as is the Onota rail trail that leads to the Au Train river. Would definitely stay here again when in the area.
Great clean, convenient cabin on the snowmobile trail. Everything worked perfect and was very comfortable and had everything we needed. Will definitely be back.
This cottage was perfect for us. Walking distance to Lake Superior beach and the Au Train river, short drive into Munising, but still a private little hide-away. It was very clean and well stocked. We enjoyed the fire pit almost every night, fire wood supplied!
The cabin was comfortable and had everything we needed for a relaxing stay. Enjoyed the firepit and the quick walk to the beach. Also liked that it was centrally located. Made for an easy drive to everything we wanted to see. Michelle was an excellent host. Would definitely stay here again.

Thank you Susan for such a kind review. Welcome back anytime!
I couldn’t recommend this cabin enough as a jumping off point for Upper Peninsula Adventures. The cabin itself is clean, comfortable and in a perfect location for hiking, kayaking or hanging out at the beach. It is outfitted with a well equipped kitchen and laundry, as well as comfortable bedding for adults and children.
Such a great home. We were literally steps from our favorite beach in the world. Had everything we need and pefect home base for UP site seeing.
Thank you so much!

Jeff, Thank you so much for such kind words. We love meeting wonderful guests like you and your family. We are so happy when our guests enjoy themselves. It makes us smile! Hope we will see you again this winter.
The property is located in the backyard of the owner, it is well stocked with everything you need. The owner has lots of rules for the home but overall it was a great stay in a good location if you are there for Pictured Rocks!

HI Katie,
Thank you for the kind review. I would like to point out that we have almost an acre of land and the cottage is not exactly in our back yard. There are plenty of trees for a good buffer and privacy. There are no other rental cabins around it. As owners we do respect our guests privacy.
The rental agreement can be reviewed prior to booking the cottage. I am always available for questions.
I am happy you and your friends enjoyed your stay with us here in the U.P.
Again, thank you for keeping the cottage in excellent condition and please come back anytime.
A very clean and well supplied rental. Host was very nice and informative. Rental was a short drive to nearby Munising, Pictured Rocks and Marquette so that location was good.
We visit the area every summer and this is by far the most comfortable and convenient camp we've stayed at. While you can't see Lake Superior from the house, you can absolutely walk there in 2 minutes.
The beds were very comfortable and the kitchen has everything you could possibly need. It was such a comfortable home base for all our UP adventures.

Thank you for your kind comments. We usually brush out the area so Lake Superior can be seen from the cottage, however, with my husband's cervical surgery he is not able to it this summer. I haven't learned to use the chain saw yet...lol. But happy ypu enjoyed your stay. Thanks again.
A wonderful place on the amazing U.P. Lake Superior shore
We had a lovely stay here. The place is clean and very well maintained. Just across the street from a fantastic and unique beach with the au train river connecting with beautiful Lake Superior. The cottage has a fantastic deck with plenty of outdoor seating and a fire ring outside with fire wood provided. Close to Munising and Pictured Rocks and everything that the area has to offer. Thanks and hope to return!
Michelle was a wonderful host and we thoroughly enjoyed our time at her cabin. 2 minute walk to the river or the beach was fantastic. Short drive to Marquette and Munising for the touristy things. We saw sandhill cranes walk through the property multiple times. I cant say enough positive things about this location and host. We hope to return someday.
The Doucettes have a beautiful rental property and do everything they can to make the trip enjoyable. There was plenty of material on hand giving information on area attractions and Michelle gave us tons of ideas when we arrived. The location in Au Train was perfect for us as we checked out plenty of beautiful spots from Marquette to Grand Marais. Highly recommended.

Thank you. It was my pleasure hosting and meeting you both. Perfect guests.
I am sorry I messed up on the review on my end. I'm trying to fix it. I forgot one section that should have been 5 stars 🌟. Loved meeting you both!
Relaxing stay & great location to explore the area !
We had a very relaxing and fun adventure on our trip and in staying at the cottage in Au Train !
The cottage was very clean and well organized & had everything we needed. The owners were very nice and welcoming and easy to communicate with.
The location was great for exploring many different activities in the area ,including hiking , fishing , swimming and visiting the nearby Pictured Rocks! There is so much more we wanted to do , but didn’t seem to have enough time ! We plan to come back and explore the area another time soon :)
This home has newly constructed bedrooms and bathroom that were perfect for my husband and I. We did not use the bunk room that has 4 bunk beds. It is perfectly located between Marquette and Munising while also being a short walk across the road to a beach on Lake Superior with great sunsets. Walk up in the woods, walk to the beach, travel to a town...just perfect!
Excellent location. Clean, comfortable, and thoughtfully equipped cottage. Beautiful surroundings and very close to Lake Superior. Waterfalls, trails, and attractions nearby. Friendly hostess provided helpful local information. Suitable for couples and families. The two bunkbeds in one room can sleep four kids. Bonus feature: this cottage has the biggest and best residential washer and dryer we've ever seen in our lives! We enjoyed a delightful stay.
Michelle’s communication was great. Her cottage is easy to find and access. It was clean and cozy. I cooked a couple meals there. Munising and Marquette are fairly short drives from the cottage. Michelle’s husband kept the property plowed and shoveled all weekend so we never had issues parking or needing to walk through 7” of snow. Highly recommend.

Have a great year.
My hubby and I had a wonderful stay and Michelle and Jerry’s home. It was well appointed and comfortable. In my 20 years of renting VRBO, this is the first time the owner met us and answered any questions we might have. What a special touch! Thanks again and hopefully we will see you next year.

About the host
Hosted by Michelle Doucette
My husband and I purchased the property in 2005 but it wasn't until 2013 & 2014 that we started to remodel the little one bedroom cabin. Well, it has now turned into a beautiful little cottage with an addition of two large bedrooms and a large bath. The only item left in the cabin was the pine flooring. All else was removed and rebuilt. We added 3 inches of spray foam to all walls for extra insulation for warmth and sound. We hope to finish the landscaping soon. We built a boardwalk going into the cottage with stairs going down to the fire pit area.
Why they chose this property
My husband's family settled here many years ago from Quebec, Canada. In this small community you are either a relative or a one-time tourist who just couldn't leave. Make sure you look for the bridge over the Au Train River which is named after our family...'The Doucette Bridge'. It is even on most maps
What makes this property unique
The Unique Benefits about this cottage is Location, Location, Location. It is sort of located in a triangle with Lake Superior across the the M-28 Hwy and Au Train River across the Forest Lake Rd...all no less than a 3 minute walk (check out the area map). Au Train River is famous for its canoe & kayak trips as it is a slow, shallow, sandy meandering river going out into Lake Superior. Au Train is located in the middle of Munising and Marquette in which both cities have Lake Superior shoreline recreational activities. Marquette was just named one of the top 25 travel destinations in the world! Munising boasts its Pictured Rocks Boat Tours which are like No Other! The last two summers we have seen a dramatic increase in tourists visiting the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, partly due to the exposure of our National Parks.
