L'Isle sur la Sorgue is a beautiful Provençal market town that is delightful to stroll around. The river Sorgue meanders around and through the centre of the town. Along the riverbanks are many functioning water wheels, one of which is visible from the house. L'Isle is world renowned as a centre for antiques, with hundreds of permanent shops and dealers, two annual antique fairs (Easter and mid-August) and a huge antiques market every Sunday, the largest in France outside Paris.
The town bursts to life every Thursday and Sunday with one of the biggest and best French markets in the region. There is nothing like experiencing the bustle, the aromas and the extraordinary fresh local produce of the market, all a few moments from the townhouse. From mountains of olives and tapenade, amazing cheeses and saucissons, rotisseries of chicken, Moroccan tagines and paellas, to tables laden with lavender and artisanal soaps. It is a marvellous assault on all the senses.
L'Isle is the gateway to the Luberon region with its stunning perched villages and fields of lavender. The whole of Provence is within an easy drive - 20 minutes to Avignon, 20 minutes to Menerbes, an hour to Aix-en-Provence, Marseille and Arles, and 2 1/2 hours to St Tropez and the French Riviera.
