WeatherLea's 28 acres of pastures, meadows, lawns and vineyard offer pleasant walks and places to sit and enjoy the outdoors and the view of the nearby Short Hills. The Potomac River is only a half-mile away.
Malcolm and Pamela Baldwin are active retirees from careers in international development and environmental policy, now focusing their time and energy on their historic farm, where they raise sheep and llamas, grow wine grapes and host weddings and overnight guests. They love to share their property with guests from all over the U.S. and overseas.
Pamela and Malcolm Baldwin purchased this cottage in 1992
The Shepherd's Cottage and its companion the Milk Cottage -- both part of beautiful WeatherLea Farm and Vineyard in Lovettsvillle, VA -- combine the best of vacation rental and bed-and-breakfast accommodations for families, couples and small groups of any age. Our location is unbeatable for a wide variety of sights and activities -- historic, recreational, rural and epicurean -- while also offering easy access to Washington DC and Baltimore, MD. We have also been a favorite place for writers to work in peace and quiet while taking advantage of our internet connections. We recently served as the location for an independent film, and for a renowned group of artists who painted our outstanding landscapes during the autumn season. Both cottages also serve as refuges for brides, grooms and their families during weddings held here at WeatherLea between May and October.
Having lived abroad for a number of years, the Baldwins especially enjoy hosting international guests!
Our location is ideal for an amazing array of historic sites, recreational opportunities, and great food and wine.
We stayed three nights in this beautiful cottage, located on Weatherlea farm! When we arrived, the breakfast goodies (meat, eggs, whole milk, yogurt and more) were SO appreciated and delicious. This home had more than enough room for my husband and I, along with my two children, to spread out. And the farm was so fun to explore! We had a nightly walk down to visit the sheep and llamas, which was their favorite part of our day. They are still talking about it! This property is incredibly close to the Maryland line, and just across the river lays lots of fun stuff to check out. There is even a cool coffee shop in a converted church! Breweries, wineries, restaurants- all close-by!
We took day trips to Gettysburg and DC and both were about an hour away. The cottage was just wonderful and the owner's hospitality out of this world. We will absolutely be back again!
Myself and 5 friends shared this wonderful cottage for the weekend. Everything that we needed was there! A Grill, cleaning supplies, the towels and linens were better than mine at home also the waters in the bedroom came in handy in the morning! Pam was so inviting and their farm and vineyard is just gorgeous. This was a fantastic getaway from the city for the weekend. They are close to everything, the wineries, downtown harpers ferry -- we did a white water tubing adventure that was only 10 minutes away. We will definitely be back for an extended weekend. We watched Malcom feed the llamas! :)
The Sheperds Cottage is set on a beautiful sheep farm in wine country. It is perfect for two couples or as in our case, girls weekend! Filled with old world charm, the cottage has a very nicely equipped kitchen that was perfect for cooking breakfast each morning with the provisions Pamela graciously stocked! The dining area table seats 6 and allowed us to play games each evening comfortably. The cottage has wi-fi as well as cable tv so you can stay in touch with the outside world. We were a party of 3 so we each had our own room but there is only one bathroom so sharing is a must. The area is beautiful and the wineries were fantastic! We all agreed we would return in a heartbeat! Thank you Pamela and Malcolm for your hospitality!
Our family with two boys (10 and 5) were fortunate enough to find this beautiful gem in Lovettsville, VA over Memorial Day weekend. The cottage is recently updated with plethora of high quality towels and linens. The ample sundries of food were perfect for morning breakfast on the porch and we enjoyed the opportunity to sample the local wines which we do not see much of in Dallas. We stopped at Sunset Hills vineyard but would have loved to have visited more, time permitting. The highlights of the stay for our boys were watching the sheep being fed with Pamela and Malcolm's grandkids. who were about the same age. For us adults, there was noting more peaceful than walking through the property and especially the vineyards. This was an area of the country we were not familiar with and will certainly back. The weather cooperated and we went tubing down the local river through River Riders and toured Harper's Ferry. Dining was done locally at Market Table Bistro in town and another at Harper's Ferry at a charming casual restaurant, The Canal House Cafe (BYOB). Had we stayed another night we would certainly liked to have grilled out on cottage patio BBQ. Thank you for a memorable stay!!

We really enjoyed our stay at the Shepherd's Cottage. The cottage was the perfect size and had all of the amenities of home with beautiful, peaceful surroundings. We woke up both mornings and enjoyed some delicious treats that Pamela and Malcolm left for us, while we sipped coffee on the back deck. It was a wonderful way to relax and enjoy the spring weather. We also loved how close the location is to activities in the area. There are great restaurants, vineyards, shopping, and quaint historic towns just around the corner. Pamela and Malcolm are wonderful hosts!
We are ideally located for visitors with a wide variety of interests -- history, nature and wildlife, agriculture, bicycling, running and biking, fresh and local food and wine (as well as craft beers), painting and drawing, or just chilling out in our cottage with a good book or movie. (We keep a collection of books and DVDs in our cottages).
For Civil War buffs, we are a short drive from the battlefields of Antietam, Manassas, Monocacy, South Mountain and Ball's Bluff; even Gettysburg is only an hour's drive away. Civil War battle reenactments occur from time to time at all these battlefields. Harper's Ferry, WV -- the site of John Brown's raid -- is 10 miles away at the confluence of the Potomac and Shenandoah Rivers. Lovettsville itself was a key border town, as a majority of its residents voted against secession and a number of its young men fought for the Union as part of the Independent Loudoun Virginia Rangers.
We are also only 8 miles from the historic village of Waterford, founded by Quakers, whose residents also voted against secession and served as an important stop on the Underground Railroad. Today, the fabulous Waterford Craft Fair and Homes Tour on the first weekend of October brings thousands of visitors from all over the U.S.
Lovettsville hosts two fun festivals each year -- MayFest and Oktoberfest; Brunswick hosts Railroad Days in October.
Several vendors at Harper's Ferry offer rafting, kayaking, canoeing and inner-tubing on both the Potomac and the Shenandoah.
