About Pamela and Malcolm Baldwin

Malcolm and Pamela Baldwin are active retirees from careers in international development and environmental policy, now focusing their time and energy on their historic farm, where they raise sheep and llamas, grow wine grapes and host weddings and overnight guests. They love to share their property with guests from all over the U.S. and overseas.

Pamela and Malcolm Baldwin purchased this cottage in 1992

Why Pamela and Malcolm Baldwin chose Northern Virginia

The Shepherd's Cottage and its companion the Milk Cottage -- both part of beautiful WeatherLea Farm and Vineyard in Lovettsvillle, VA -- combine the best of vacation rental and bed-and-breakfast accommodations for families, couples and small groups of any age. Our location is unbeatable for a wide variety of sights and activities -- historic, recreational, rural and epicurean -- while also offering easy access to Washington DC and Baltimore, MD. We have also been a favorite place for writers to work in peace and quiet while taking advantage of our internet connections. We recently served as the location for an independent film, and for a renowned group of artists who painted our outstanding landscapes during the autumn season. Both cottages also serve as refuges for brides, grooms and their families during weddings held here at WeatherLea between May and October.

What makes this cottage unique

Having lived abroad for a number of years, the Baldwins especially enjoy hosting international guests!

Our location is ideal for an amazing array of historic sites, recreational opportunities, and great food and wine.

We are ideally located for visitors with a wide variety of interests -- history, nature and wildlife, agriculture, bicycling, running and biking, fresh and local food and wine (as well as craft beers), painting and drawing, or just chilling out in our cottage with a good book or movie. (We keep a collection of books and DVDs in our cottages).

For Civil War buffs, we are a short drive from the battlefields of Antietam, Manassas, Monocacy, South Mountain and Ball's Bluff; even Gettysburg is only an hour's drive away. Civil War battle reenactments occur from time to time at all these battlefields. Harper's Ferry, WV -- the site of John Brown's raid -- is 10 miles away at the confluence of the Potomac and Shenandoah Rivers. Lovettsville itself was a key border town, as a majority of its residents voted against secession and a number of its young men fought for the Union as part of the Independent Loudoun Virginia Rangers.

We are also only 8 miles from the historic village of Waterford, founded by Quakers, whose residents also voted against secession and served as an important stop on the Underground Railroad. Today, the fabulous Waterford Craft Fair and Homes Tour on the first weekend of October brings thousands of visitors from all over the U.S.

Lovettsville hosts two fun festivals each year -- MayFest and Oktoberfest; Brunswick hosts Railroad Days in October.

Several vendors at Harper's Ferry offer rafting, kayaking, canoeing and inner-tubing on both the Potomac and the Shenandoah.

Notes:
We are actually a hybrid accommodation, suitable as a vacation rental but also a B&B -- we provision breakfast foods in the refrigerator for guests to enjoy (and cook, in the case of eggs, bacon and sausage) for the first 1-2 mornings. Guests may bring in and prepare food for all other meals in the fully-equipped kitchen. We are also appropriately described as a "farmstay" accommodation, since observation of the sheep, llamas and vineyard are part of the experience!

The owners were warm and responsive. The property was beautiful and the house met all of our needs. I highly recommend this spot for families (in particular) and everyone.

Owner's Response: Thanks for your kind words, Jenny. It was such fun to see your 3-generation family group enjoying a relaxing time together exploring the farm, and to hear about your visits to the historical landmarks of the area. We hope to see you here again, because there are lots more fun things to see and do! Best, Pamela

Great getaway, great hosts

  • 5 of 5

Truly a great place to relax and enjoy a country weekend. The cottage was quaint, comfy and had everything we could possibly ask for. Pamela & Malcolm Baldwin could not have been better hosts. Thank you to them for welcoming us, inviting us to the barn dance and treating us like family. We will certainly be back!

Wonderful quiet retreat

  • 5 of 5

What a great place. The hosts were so kind to our kids, who could not get enough of wandering the grounds, waking up at 6am to go for walks and swing on the swing and talk to the sheep. The cottage was lovely--tasteful, comfortable, well-appointed. And the location is perfect for biking the C&O, hiking, exploring the towns and battlefields nearby.

Charming and peaceful

Loved staying at this very cozy cottage, enjoying the incredible farm and landscape created and maintained lovingly by Pamela and Malcolm. They were doting when we had some small issues, and generous and gracious. We look forward to returning.

Hidden from the busy time that we live in

  • 5 of 5

My daughter in law found this wonderful cottage on a REAL working farm for Presidents' Day weekend. We live only one hour away and we thrilled to drive up the driveway to see sheep and llama right up at the fence. Really...only one hour away from the hustle and bustle to a perfect oasis. The pictures of the Shepherd's Cottage are wonderful and when you walk in, you feel like you are going back in a time of easy living. Ample room inside for the grandparents, parents and two children with outside areas to explore as well. The back deck with a grill was perfect for our evening meals and the front porch was perfect to watch the grandchildren running around, looking at the sheep, playing at the hay bale, not having to worry about them. Lots of things to explore on the farm with leisurely walks through the farm walking through the vineyard, pond area, and more. We even had the excitement of watching the deer running through the field as we were relaxing at the top of the vineyard. Breakfast items had been loving placed there for us to enjoy which was greatly appreciated. Luxurious bed and bath items for us to enjoy as well!

We will be back! Even though we went in February and everything was brown from winter, our stay was a treasure and a welcoming place to be. Seeing the vineyard in full growth and everything bring green will be exciting to see as well. Yes, a treasure of a place to stay at.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your kind review. I am so pleased that you had unusual February weather while here, so you could fully enjoy walks around the farm and vineyard. And who would guess that dinner on the deck could be had at this time of year? I am glad, too, that you found the cottage comfortable and breakfast food good. I look forward to seeing you again when green fields and leaves on trees will provide an even better experience!
