About Eric Holmlund

We have 6 children, live in Colorado and enjoy vacationing at our 'Fish Camp' in Lake Providence, Louisiana.

Eric Holmlund purchased this house in 2014

Why Eric Holmlund chose Louisiana

We had always wanted to have a lake house. Along with our kids, we love water activities, fishing, kayaking, boating, etc.

In 2013 we discovered Lake Providence, and fell in love the the town and its people. With a rich cultural heritage, and southern charm, it's a great place to relax and get away from the hustle and bustle of life.

What makes this house unique

This property was perfect for us because it fits our whole family, has a great dock, and is close to our favorite local cuisine at places like The Dock and My Dream Eatery. We love relaxing in the screened in porch, a great place to do some reading or writing. We also enjoy playing board games as a family, and there is an assortment of them at the house.

There is a swing-set in the back yard to keep young children entertained.

We also enjoy cycling and running. Although the terrain is flat, the roads are good and the scenery is pretty. Interestingly, it is precisely a half-marathon (13.1 miles) to run around the lake.

As advertised

  • 3 of 5

The fish camp was as advertised. It was very spacious, quiet, and relaxing; a wonderful place if you just want to get away. It was fully stocked with all of the essentials. The second floor screen patio provides fantastic views and is the best part of the house. Be advised however that all of the bedrooms are upstairs and the two full baths are downstairs (half bath upstairs). This created a slight inconvenience. Also there is only one television (downstairs) used primarily to play games or watch movies as there is no cable or satellite. Camp has Wi-Fi but we were never able to access it, despite numerous attempts.

The location of the property was absolutely beautiful and serene.

  • 2 of 5

The location was absolutely peaceful and beautiful. The property itself needs work. The deck was extremely dangerous to walk on. However the owners did have a kayak and paddle boards that they allowed the renters to use.

Owner's Response: I'm glad you enjoyed your stay. I think you must be referring to the "dock" rather than the deck, as the deck was completely rebuilt last year. As far as the safety of the dock, I guess it's all relative to what you would expect. I'm confident in letting my 6 kids use it, and there have never been any incidents that I know of. When we visit the property for our annual vacation, we check the dock and reinforce any areas that need it. It is possible you noticed some broken 2x4 stringers on the section of the dock leading out to the platform. While not readily visible, those were already reinforced with new 2x4's to the inside of them. That having been said, it is an old wooden dock, and caution should always be exercised when on old docks. The water and weather may cause nails to work their way up a bit causing a hazard for bare feet (we always hammer those down when we visit and also reinforce with screws). Eventually we'll replace it but for now I would just let future guests know that it is basically an old wood dock that I would consider average for the region its in. Also the dock is not really an accurate measure of the overall condition of the property. For example the entire house was remodeled in 2014. Best regards, Eric

Family fun over Easter Weekend

  • 5 of 5

We stayed for 3 nights at the Fish Camp over Easter Weekend 2016. We wanted to find a place with enough to do to occupy 5 teenage kids as well as 6 adults. This place most certainly fit the bill! Everyone had a blast fishing, paddling around, and swimming. The house is super clean and spacious. The kitchen is well set up. Bedrooms are comfortable, with plenty of space to spread out. The upstairs screen room is perfect for looking over the lake in the morning with a cup of coffee! My kids wanted us to move out there it was so relaxing and fun! I highly recommend staying at the Fish Camp for your family get aways!

Eugene Haley Sports Complex (Baseball fields just down the street, easy walk)

Louisiana Cotton Museum (4 miles, on other side of lake)

Panola Pepper Company (Offers tours. 10.4 miles)

Poverty Point (A UNESCO World Heritage Site. 24 miles)

Vicksburg National Military Park (55 miles)

The house is located across from Byerley Airport. If you have your own plane, that could be convenient. Otherwise, it's not a busy airport. You'll just see a couple of crop dusters taking off and landing during the day in crop-dusting season.

FISHING:

Lake Providence is an excellent warm water fishery containing a variety of species including Largemouth Bass, White Perch, Buffalo, Bream (such as Bluegill and other sunfish), and multiple species of Catfish and Gar.

Other wildlife is also abundant, with turtles frequenting the area around the dock, birds swooping down to catch fish, and the occasional snake. While a few alligators have been known to live in the lake, we've never seen them and they do not pose any threat.

You can fish directly from our dock. Children can catch a variety of species using worms. Night fishing is also excellent, with catfish swarming the shallows at night. The avid bass fisherman can take out our kayak and explore the shorelines, or bring your own boat.

We have a selection of fishing poles and other fishing gear available at the house for your use. Additionally there is a bait and tackle shop (Ingleside) nearby.

BOATING:

We provide a kayak, stand-up paddle board (SUP), windsurf rig, and plenty of life jackets for our guests to use (all included in the house rental price).

If you would like to bring a power boat, there is a public boat launch just 100 yards away so you can easily launch your boat and tie it up at our dock during your stay.
