About Brooke Degnan
We are thrilled to invite you to share our Alaskan home with us! As all-things Alaskan enthusiasts, we take pride in providing outstanding hospitality and warmth and are happy to serve as a resource for Seward activities. Nick is a (nearly) life long Alaskan, arriving in the state as a young child. He grew up in Anchorage, Alaska and enjoys running, biking, skiing, swimming, classic cars, and spending time with his family. Brooke spent her childhood as an air force brat with two tours at Elmendorf AFB in Anchorage, AK. She returned to Alaska as an adult in 1990 and has called the state home ever since. She loves to fish, hike, bike, run, swim, and x-country ski with her family.
Brooke Degnan purchased this Apartment in 2010
Why Brooke Degnan chose Bear Creek
Seward offers the ultimate Alaskan experience - a small fishing town surrounded by towering peaks, lush wooded settings, mountain lakes, hiking trails, glaciers, wildlife, and world class fishing right in Resurrection Bay.
What makes this Apartment unique
Originally built in 1997 by a local family and designed to be a bed and breakfast, the house is ideally suited for guests. and was successfully run as a b&b for 12 years by the Woods family and the Ray family. We were drawn to the house the moment we turned off of the Seward Highway and found ourselves driving through towering Spruce trees. The house sits on the forward part of a one acre wooded parcel and has expansive multi-level decking that allows our visitors to relax and enjoy the forested setting. After 5 years of enjoying the house as our private residence, we are happy to open Bell in the Woods once again as a bed and breakfast.

Wonderful B&B and hosts
We loved everything about the Bell in the Woods. Brooke and Nick were very welcoming, personable and helpful with activities around the area. The breakfasts were amazing and my kids loved the different chocolates left on the beds each day. We stayed in a suite and it was very comfortable for a family of 4 - my daughter didn't want to leave. I highly recommend staying here in you're in the Seward area.
Peaceful retreat tucked away in the woods near Seward, Alaska
We enjoyed a peaceful weekend at Bell in the Woods. There's access to all sorts of recreation and beautiful scenery nearby. Seward is a great coastal town with all sorts of boutique businesses, great dining, glaciers, whale watching, fishing, and much more! The newly remodeled b&b decor is whimsy meets modern with lots of regional influence. The furnishings are very comfortable, with great spaces for socializing or just slipping away for some r&r indoors or out on the deck. We truly had an excellent experience visiting and look forward to many more!
Luxurious retreat close to town but nestled away in the woods!
We had the distinct opportunity to stay at Bell in the Woods as a preview to its current status as a full service B&B. I will break our stay down into the 3 things that make it so special: the hosts, the B&B itself, and the surrounding Seward area.
I will start with the hosts since I think they are what make it so special: Nick and Brooke Degnan are warm and welcoming. True “Alaskans” – they put you at ease right away and make you feel like you’ve come home. Seward is a tight knit community and they are very much a part of it. They know all there is to know about the area, the local shops/restaurants, and the various activities that are available. As extremely active people: they will share hikes that are probably not in the guidebooks!
The B&B: this is not your average Alaskan B&B. It is neither “rustic” (that’s Alaskan for “dump”), nor overly done with cheesy Alaskan themed décor. It is modern and contemporary yet still very warm and comfortable with all the amenities of a high end hotel or lodge. Brooke may have been an interior designer in her other life. And did I mention she can cook? And BAKE! Boy, can she bake. Good thing we hiked so much to burn off the baked goods. They truly love their home and community and it shows.
The surroundings: Let me start by saying I grew up in Anchorage, Alaska, left for college and did not return for 15 years. In all my time living there, I did not have the unique Alaskan experience that we had during our stay at Bell in the Woods in Seward. Seward is a scenic coastal town surrounded by mountains and glaciers. On a hike up to the Harding Icefield (a strenuous day hike to the “cradle of glaciers”) we saw bears (at a very safe distance), a moose, countless dall sheep (they crossed our path within touching distance) and the fabulously named “Hoary Marmot”. Brooke and Nick helped arrange a fishing expedition and two things didn’t stop all day: fish and laughter. On that day otters swam around our boat and teased us while bald eagles were plentiful overhead. The local glaciers (you can walk right up to Exit Glacier) should not be missed.
After long days of hiking, fishing, & kayaking – it was such a treat to come “home” to Bell in the Woods. It was a perfect place to relax, have a luxurious bed, a hot shower, a friendly chat, and reflect on the day’s adventures.
