Adequate lodging -- passive-aggressive owner

  • 2 of 5

Our family of 6 camps and stays in all sorts of places, meaning we're flexible and can roll with "whatever". Our motto has been: "It's an adventure!"

Having said that, it was difficult to just roll with this place.

Pros:

*20-30 min. to Zion and 1 hour from Bryce. There are not many places to stay that are reasonable in this area.

*My children described it as "cozy". It was adequate for my family of six.

*The view beyond the property is beautiful (the property itself is pretty cluttered), and the setting is peaceful and quiet.

*The owner was responsive when we asked for a fan.

Cons:

*When we entered the room (it's really only 1 room with a partition, plus a small -- very small -- bathroom), it was a sauna. For some inexplicable reason, there was a space heater running (it's June in the desert of Utah) and the temperature registered 86. No big deal. We'll just turn it off and ask for a fan from the owner, which she provided. However, when told of the space heater, she acted as though we had plugged it in! And when we requested a box fan to draw the warm air out and the cooler air in, she said, "Well, I guess you can have the one in my window." It was very disappointing to be made to feel guilty for this reasonable request.

*The "air conditioner" is actually a window unit that is way past its prime. It barely touched the heat, slightly cooling the kitchen side of the partition, but leaving the bedroom section extremely warm. As another reviewer said, the weather is lovely after about 9 p.m. But it's HOT until the sun goes down completely.

*One of the reasons we chose this property was the advertised washing machine. We had tent camped in Moab and were to do the same at Grand Canyon, so a washing machine was a necessity. The machine is tiny, so we had to do a number of loads, even though we only had 3 changes of clothes. The owner approached my wife and said, "I think you're pushing it", referring to the amount of wash. My wife is the easiest person on earth to get along with, and not easily offended, but this was unacceptable behavior. If an owner doesn't want the machine used, don't advertise.

*The home was not particularly clean: crumbs in the kitchen in corners, etc.

Bottom line: expectations. If you're expecting adequate lodging and don't mind manipulative comments from an owner at a fairly good price, this is your place. Otherwise, you might look elsewhere.

NIce, simple country place to stay

  • 4 of 5

This home was a simple, quiet place to stay. Everything was just as described, and the hosts were really friendly and helpful. We enjoyed a campfire 2 of the 3 nights we stayed there. Grocery and gas were just 2 miles up the road. The rental is actually in the back yard of the hosts' own home. Our only complaint was that the house was stuffy when closed up in the day, (summertime) but then if we left the windows open it was way too cold at night. We just couldn't quite get the temperature comfortable inside, even it when it was nice outside. Lovely evening views from the house, and comfortably close to Zion and Bryce.

Beautiful area within several national parks

  • 5 of 5

Rental was PERFECT for us. Mike was a fabulous host, made sure we had everything we needed and more! You have to plan a couple hours for Red Cave slot canyon, it's way more than we anticipated! Thank you for everything Mike, especially for having a fire for us at night!

Peace in the valley

A great location near Zion. A quiet retreat with all amenities you need to relax after enjoying the park. Carol is a great hostess and I will certainly consider returning to this cabin retreat.

Excellent location, facilities and hosts!

  • 5 of 5

We chose this location because of it's proximity to Zion, Bryce, and the North Rim, and the opportunity to rent an apartment that could hold our family of 5 adults at a reasonable price. We could not have been happier with this choice. It was a great place to work out from, as we visited Zion, North Rim, Bryce, Rt. 12 (Escalante), Cedar Breaks, and other local sights during our 7-day stay. The hosts were terrific; Mike offered us many tips about what to see, and he personally enabled us to see the local "Red Cave", which was an unplanned, terrific sight-seeing trip. The price was quite reasonable, and we were able to prepare whatever meals we wanted in the apartment. A washer and dryer were conveniently located below the apartment, so keeping clean clothes was easy. There was a mid-size grocery store about 5 miles away, which took care of all of our needs with respect to supplies. Every night Mike built a fire in the fire pit out back, and we had several nice evenings of socializing. If you're a person who enjoys hiking and exploring the outdoors (especially national parks) and being away from the crowds, this place is perfect.
